Kanye West: The Samples, Part 2

by Kevin on November 18, 2007 · 26 comments

Kanye WestBetcha didn’t think I’d do Part 2, huh? It’s been almost 3 months since I posted the first batch of Kanye West samples and it has since become the most popular post on this site. So, long overdue, here is Part 2. I tried to stay clear of samples from his solo albums. Since I already posted the samples from his latest CD, Graduation, I plan to eventually compile College Dropout and Late Registration samples. I also stayed clear of any samples he did for Jay-Z as most of those were on The Blueprint anyway.

This post has some nice gems though with samples he used for The Game, Nas, Talib Kweli, Lupe Fiasco, Slum Village, Mariah Carey, and Janet Jackson.

Again, if there’s a specific sample you’re looking for, holler back in the comments. Chances are I probably got it.

J.D. — check the bottom for that Do or Die sample.

Check it out when you get a chance. Once again, great post man, keep up the good work!!

Yo good looking on the samples posts you do! Just wondering, do you know what sample Killer Mike ”All 4 U (Niecy’s Song)” from Monster uses? Please let me know if you manage to find out, thanx! :)

5 Kevin December 7, 2007 at 12:00 pm

Playa — naw man. To tell you the truth, I’m not even familiar with that track. I did a quick look around and the only thing I found was that the track is produced by Cool & Dre. I’ll keep a look out though!

Thanks for responding, I asked a few other places but only you seemed to have replied, I appreciate that, keep up the excellent work.

Ill site, once again thanks for taking the time to help me out.

P.S. You seem to really know your stuff when it comes to compiling these producer production-credits, who are your top 3 fave of all time and who do you think is holding it down right now? Also, would you rather hear a Jay-Z album comprised of Just-Blaze bangers or Kanye beats?

7 Kevin December 8, 2007 at 11:18 am

No prob man… DAMN, those are some tough questions, but I took a minute to think about em. My all time top 3 fav producers? That one’s tough, cuz my tastes are constantly changing. I think my number one, you’d be surprised based on this site… Timbaland. More ol’ school Timbaland, than the Timbo you hear on radio today. The only reason why I haven’t done a spotlight on him yet is cuz he’s got so much music! Plus I haven’t really been into the pop stuff he’s been doing lately. Anyway, I’m gonna cop out and say Kanye and Just Blaze for the other two.

Holding it down right now? That’s hard to say, as a lot of cats are doing there thing. Commercially, I think The Hitmen did a wonderful thing with their joints off American Gangster and the Big Doe Rehab. But, I’m gonna have to say the producer’s in the Justuce League camp (9th Wonder, Nicolay, Khrysis, Illmind) and really holding it down in the underground. 9th & Nicolay both have solo albums coming out in Jan/Feb and both should be HOT.

To answer your last question… Jay-Z & Just Blaze. I think Just brings out a better side of Jay than Kanye does. They work well together, but I’m gonna have to throw one in there that you didn’t mention… Jay-Z & Timbaland. Tim def brings out the creative side in Jay and if Tim decides to come back to hip hop, I think that’s what his first project should be.

im looking for a timbo sample… from “drop” by timbo, magoo and fatman scoop… if you could help me, i would be very grateful.

9 Kevin January 4, 2008 at 5:31 pm

Agha — I don’t know what the main part of the song samples, but the beat switch at the end is sampled from The Time’s “Get It Up” off their 1981 debut album.

10 Agha January 5, 2008 at 8:07 pm

thanks man!

11 Fundamental January 17, 2008 at 4:02 pm

Props on these posts, man. Yo, can you find the sample to that Freeway & Twista song “Show Go On”? I’ve always thought the melody was a familiar video game sample, but could never put my finger on it…Gauntlet? Anyway, I don’t even think that song was ever released in full version.

Thanks!

12 Kevin January 17, 2008 at 5:33 pm

Fundamental… my sources tell me the sample used for that was “Daddy’s All Gone” by the Average White Band. I never heard the Freeway/Twista song though.

13 jayyeezy January 21, 2008 at 6:03 pm

14 Duck Brown January 21, 2008 at 10:29 pm

Dope post, good work Kevin. I got a good one for you cause even my crate diggin friends are stumped on this one. Where did Kanye get those sounds for “We Major” on Late Regisration? Maybe thats just not a sample

15 Kevin January 22, 2008 at 6:26 pm

jayyeezy… yeah, I may revisit these in the future and do a Kanye sample collection. I did this post went I was just doing snippets, but now that they has been an interest in whole collections I will probably get around to this.

Duck Brown… actually there are 2 songs sampled on “We Major”… “Action” by Orange Krush & “Superwoman (Where Were You When I Needed You)” by Stevie Wonder

16 manny January 30, 2008 at 10:26 pm

can you please post what sample was used on the song “You Know” by White Boy

17 Bryan August 5, 2008 at 1:16 pm

Playa, the Killer Mike sample for Niecy… is from a group called Parlet… it’s a funk record… George Clinton put out in like ‘73

18 Agha August 6, 2008 at 9:30 pm

i read your post about jay’s team-ups and definitely jay-z fits so good in timbo’s style. just blaze has a fenomenal style too that brings up that jay’s lyrical power we know so very well… but timbo takes number one.
and if we think in a trio i might say timbo, jay and missy make an explosive team work: timbo doin his shit, jay spitin is fire and missy givin that nasty woman flava! know waht i mean?! =)
Good work with this site man!
