Producer’s Spotlight: The Alchemist

by Kevin on December 9, 2007 · 22 comments

The AlchemistI’m gonna have to admit… I’ve been sleeping on The Alchemist hard! I mean I knew his beats; the work he’s done with Mobb Deep, Dilated Peoples, and D-Block, but I didn’t realize how sick his style really is until I put this compilation together. I’m gonna have to thank Creative Hustler for recommending a Producer’s Spotlight on The Alchemist. This is probably one of my favorite compilations yet!

The Alchemist, whose real name is Alan Maman, hails from Beverley Hills California. He actually started out back in 1993 as part of a duo with actor Scott Caan, called The Whooliganz. When that gig didn’t work out, Alchemist turned to making beats and ended up being the main producer for Dilated Peoples. His big break came in the late 90’s when he was introduced to Mobb Deep. From there he went on to produce songs for Nas, Fat Joe, The LOX, Ghostface Killah, and Prodigy’s solo albums. Currently, The Alchemist is the official tour DJ for Eminem and his label Shady Records.

Dude cuts samples crazy too!  May have to do a sample collection next… If anyone knows the sample credits to the few I missed, please let me know.  I seriously want to know what that Sheek Louch sample is, but I can’t find it anywhere.

Yo Kevin, is that sample in Key to the City the same as the Roots’ Don’t Feel Right? Also, I figured I’d throw out a suggestion for #21…the worst comes to worst remix by dilated peoples. I linked it here:

Btw, I respect that revolutionary warfare beat, but don’t you agree 9th killed it with his remix? link:

Curious to see what people think. Not really a who flipped it better, but more a who matches Nas better I guess.

Yo Dave, good looks man! These are the kind of discussions I’ve hoping to get out of this blog!

Yup, I just pulled out The Roots and they def sampled the same vocals. I THINK it’s a sample of Ohio Player’s “Ecstasy”, but I’m not positive as I can’t find my copy of that sample right now.

Nice remix of “Worst Comes To Worst”! He used the same same that Jaheim used in “Put That Woman First”. I recognized that immediately!

I had never heard that 9th remix before, thanks! You’re right, 9th did killed that beat; however, I think I’m feeling the Alchemist version more. It’s hard to say… 9th mad the remix sound so different from the original. Def makes Nas sound a lot harder on the track. That’s a tough one; they’re both great!

Books of rhymes beat is one of the worst i’ve ever heard– sounds absurdely asthetic, yet it is a simple chord arrangement much better suited for a preem or 9th wonder beat. i suggest you listen to 9th wonder book of rhymes remix. MUCHHHHHHHHHH better. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zmNMgZ5um9Y

if you like alchemist listen to this beat man, unbelievable:

Now you can’t go comparing Alchemist and 9th’s beats. No doubt 9th killed the remix. He killed the whole God Stepson project. But yeah, now that I listen to that Book of Rhymes beat, you’re pretty much right. I can’t for the life of me remember why I included that track!

No probs man, thanx for the shout out – nice work with the feature! lill mistake I spotted “We gonna make it” is from Kiss tha game goodbye album not Kiss of Death. Some his best beats have been for Dilated especially off the Platform album – Title track and Annihilation slam hard! also Offa Prodigy’s 1st H.N.I.C Album, he’s all over that Keep it Thoro is Fire!
