all of this anger is totally misguided i think. madlib is one of my favorite dj's/producers, and I totally understand where he is coming from, it's not anything negative to you the bloggers, or him trying to hold his techniques as most of us couldn't flip those samples even knowing what they are into what he creates. His problem with the sample sets is that it creates a form for people to sue him because he doesn't clear many of his samples. He uses them freely and layers lots of samples so when literally the list is out there, artists will coming at him with lawsuits and that is something that he probably wants to avoid...

Wouldn't it be nice if anyone from Stones Throw, other than their trained link crawling chimps would get in contact with you to answer some simple questions? Or if Peanut Butter Wolf (I'm getting sick of typing his name already, lol) or Madlib themselves would actually debate the situation in a logical and analytical forum, expressing why they take down anything related to them, especially free mixes/podcasts that contain "their" music. My main question is, why can't we archive the podcast sets for them? They don't have one themselves don't they think the fans, especially the people who haven't heard the previous ones, deserve to be able to listen to them (again). I sure do and that's what I tried to do early in my blog but they kept taking down the FREE mixes, retail stuff I understand but why the FREE stuff? Other than website traffic to their site I can't see a reasonable or logical explanation for not allowing others to hear something, they themselves posted for free.
I mean if anything if they co-operated with the blogs and bloggers that appreciate their music they would probably get more album sales, I mean studies have been conducted that correlate the connection between blogs and album sales:
"NYU Stern professor Vasant Dhar and former student Elaine Chang sampled 108 albums released between January and March of 2007 to determine the impact of blog chatter on record sales. Using Amazon.com sales rankings, albums were tracked four weeks before and four weeks after release. Researchers found that when an album got mention in more than 40 legitimate blog posts, sales were three times the average. If those albums were associated with major labels, sales jumped five times the average. Albums that got more than 250 blog mentions saw sales increases of six times the average."

Hollywood Reporter

So if anything they would make more $, they could also thank us for the free publicity as well, I mean 90% of us don't get a red cent for posting anything on our blogs, we do it for the LOVE of the music, something that seems to be forgotten in all of this.
Anyway I'm over it, I've joked and made aggressive comments on my blog but at the end of the day, it's them that have to realize that ultimately it's the fans that help put food on their tables.

Madlib is my favorite Hip-Hop producer. I'm not saying he's the best. I'm just saying his work strikes a chord with me that no one else seems to. DOOM is quickly becoming one of my favorite MCs/artists...the Madvillain stuff was just perfect.
I know I'm a little late here y'all...it never even occurred to me to look into getting hold to the original samples (some of them records I have already - it was cool hearing them cut up like only Madlib would!).
Guess it's no surprise, I'm a producer also, and I'm not interested in biting Madlib's style...but I would love to have insight into how he puts stuff together (Dig the way he cut up The Stylistics' version of Peaches & Herb's song "United" on the 2nd Dudley Perkins record for instance).

Would someone be so kind as to hook me up with this sample set?
You can reach me at moot (at) mootbooxle (dot) com.

Thanks a billionzillionmillion!!!!!!!!!!

To answer the question........

I appreciate the sample sets. In listening to the artists who produce the music we all love, I think it gives us a listeners a window to peek into the mind of Madlib, Doom, Pete Rock, Gangstarr amongst a whole slew of other artists that are in opinion, "Master's of the Boards (Productions wise)."

Over the past year checking this blog I have been exposed to so many samples sets from my favorite that I can't lie even lie..... I now listen to the sample sets as equally as I listen to the actual album form the artist.... If not MORE. I got the Madvilliany sample set..... I was fu$%#in' blown away by the treatment of the original tracks. I for one wish I was been in the studio when madlib did the Quasimoto albums.... Or when Doom did "Operation Doomsday.".... But that time is past.

I was one of those kids who actually read the liner notes of a hip hop album to get the samples..... At the time I didn't have a computer but I would ask my Grandmother for clarity on certain tracks. My first sample she cleared up for me was "Night in Tunisia" by Dizzy Gillespie wqhich was samples in "Manifest" by Gangstarr. I was so addicted to that song I had her find me the album in her collection & show me the song. That's crazy!

What I'm saying is........ Someone has to do the homework & leg work looking for tracks. Although, the hard work of an artist should not go unnoticed. I for one am not a producer BUT I can appreciate the postings. It's either this blog or someone on Limewire finding the tracks. Compiling them & making thier own Mix out of that. (which I've done)

I say keep it coming...... It does cross strange water when cats start to take the records & make money from them. That's just wrong. (to me anyway). Download them. appreciate them in the comfort of your own home. That's just me though.

I hope that answers the question.

If every producer had to clear every sample, there would be no hip hop. Do you think Low End Theory or Midnight Marauders gets made if they had to clear every sample prior to release? There are countless hip hop classics that would not have seen the light of day if every sample had to be clear.

I love the idea of sample sets... but sooner or later, sample sets will hurt hip hop... simply because labels are greedy bastards and this is easy money (grab a sample set, scan for songs that you have the copyright for, call the lawyer, sue, get paid and future royalties... yea, it's that simple when the labels own the copyrighted music.) So in that sense, I understand Madlib... and he's not the only one in the business making a fuss about this. I've heard DJs, artist, and producers larger and small complain about sample sets... and it seems to have gotten louder over the past couple of months.

And to be honest,.. I was wondering when this issue was going to surface here.

[...] Well, the story starts approximately one year ago, Kevin Nottingham created a sample set for Madvillainy, the stellar Madlib-MF Doom collab album. Madlib caught wind of the sample set and instantly asked for it’s removal. Kevin respected ‘Lib’s request and took down the sample set immediately, and instead of being salty, he spread the word for a Stones Throw concert. Read here.
I see that this is an old post but I will put in my 2 cents worth.I was NEVER into sampling until I entered a contest on this site.So I got u guys to thank for that. But I always did love listening to a well sampled track. Not to knock anybody's hustle, but it would have came off a little better if he was more up front about why he wanted the sample set removed, instead of the BS excuse that he gave.No disrespect.

This is a great site that you can get a lot of useful information. Still a work in process. Not even a year old.

look, the reality of the situation is that we all love hip hop and music in general. if you want to know what lp a sample comes from you should dig around or look on google.

most beatmakers and hip hop producers are aware that they are just remixing, mashing, editing and collage.
if you've ever tried to get sample clearance from anyone you know how impossible it is. especially when you are on an indie label or self-releasing yr music. you can't just ask the artist. labels and publishing companies own the master tapes of the music yr trying to use.
the last thing you want is a cease and desist order. danger mouse gave away the grey album, but he couldn't just do that with all his records.
until sample law changes (and it will with artists like Girltalk), lists of what samples what are no good.

I agree with xpgno (April 11th) Madlib is too busy making beats and travelling with different artists. Why would he have time check Myspace pages?? I too believed it a 3rd party representing him.

What hurts him doesn't necessarily hurt hip hop.
Shedding light on obscure artists, good thing.

It wasn't even Madlib who sent the message, yall. Think about it. The message came over Myspace. I doubt Madlib ever checks his myspace, and considering that all the blogs on the page talk about Madlib in the third person (for example his latest describing his involvement with Conti from Azymuth), which means someone else is writing them. Myspace is a publicity thing and Madlib is very uninterested in publicity. Further, this whole things is a sample clearance issue, which is an issue for the record label, not the artist (my fellow producers will know this already). Madlib is a studio recluse. He doesn't spend his time googling for random websites on the internet. Honestly, he probably isn't even aware of this "issue" yet, he's so cooped up in the studio making beats. So before you say "fuck madlib" just remember that he probably wasn't even the one who sent the message.
