Paid In Full: Original Samples

We’re taking it back to the old school this time around. That’s right, one of hip hop’s greatest albums gets the sample treatment… thanks once again to my man Thomas. Released on July 7, 1987, Eric B. & Rakim‘s debut album Paid In Full is one of the most influential hip hop albums of all time. It has become a benchmark hip hop record and is a definitive piece of hip hop’s golden age era.

With that being said, we all know this album. We know Eric B. & Rakim used masses of samples on each track. This is a huge set… probably one of the biggest posted on this site! So I split the set up into three parts. I started using Rapidshare recently, cuz Megaupload was acting flaky. Rapidshare has always been very reliable, so I think we’ll stick with them for a while. Just three tracks missing from this set. Great work Thomas!

Peace to the god Rakim, Eric B and Marley. Great job for real. I had no idea how heavy this sample set would be.
    Peace

    Thanks Lyndon!

no need to download this, as i have 85% of these joints already. this sample set is still valuable to me from a sheer historical standpoint. it’s crazy to see the depth of Paid in Full as a body of work. we all know about Rakim’s prowess. now we have all the proof in the world of how dope Eric B. was as a DJ and a producer.

  • BlAcKiE

this is awesome but i hate rapidshare

  • b

All Eric B ever did was provide the finances for studio time, and act as tour DJ. Large Pro, Marley Marl, 45 King, Paul C and the God himself did pretty much all the production, mixing and cuts.

  • BMack

This is an awesome set! From a sheer historical standpoint as well as pure audio dopeness this displays the depth and originality that went into making the classic that is “Paid in Full”. It’s been pretty well documented that Eric B. was basically a ‘face’ for the group and didn’t really contribute much in terms of hands on workmanship. However, I’ve never heard any of the others say who did what or go in depth on what really went down. Credit due to those who rightfully deserve it….albums like this will likely never be made again. Thanks for compiling this and sharing with the masses!!!

man i got schooled with this one! it’s ridiculous just how much music was used in a song that you’d think was as straightforward as “i know you got soul”…

an album like this published on this scale this day–would cost millions, and yes definitely wouldn’t have been made in 2008 except in the underground.

    big ups.

  • Mike

Can anyone tell me if the video version of “paid in full”, the coldcut remix, contains the same samples as the album version of the song? thanks already

and does anybody have a link to an article or interview in which it is documented that eric b was only the face and didnt do any production really? thanks again:)

  • mr cheeba

yes there is an original paid in full video without the stupid arabian remix and the stupid annoncer on it but it wasnt doing to well in rotation so the record company did a remix and tried to turn it into dance record — i saw the original version on video music box and then came that stupid remix and seen the original again —

  • mr cheeba

from what i heard growing up in nyc at that time marley marl produced eric b is president & eric b for president and check out my melody and i think you got soul also – eric b brought some records to marley to sample and arrange and thats what marley did cause eric b had no knowledge of equipment exept turntables – eric b is a street dude and he had connections he knew marley and marley was the man also key knote was the large professor from main source programmed and co produced on paid in full — marley had released a remix of i know u got soul if i remember right saying special mix throughout the song — eric b did pay marley , maybe thats why marley kept quiet about it plus eric b would have beat him up — just like he beat up large pro — rakim did the scratches with marley on some tracks — not eric b — what has eric b produced ?

re … paid in full coldcut remix trivia…

The video mix was popular in europe ,all those extra samples, breaks & ofra haza wailing

Rakim was unhappy with the remix he said it was a pile of shit in a mixmag interview. . .
But coldcut were well respected for their cut & paste remix using the lp version
( no mastertape ) .. even though they ignored the artist.

I understand rakims point. He was a hardcore artist rapping about getting paid & reflecting on his past sticking up people accompanied by happy dancing vids & arabic chanting.
The remix would have sounded different if coldcut had the mastertapes.

btw disc 2 ,3 contains samples from the wildbunch, chad jackson ,derek b, norman cook, coldcut,cj mackintosh remixes of paid in full i, know you got soul, move the crowd,

I dont think eric b was that creative when digging breaks ( common ultimate breaks beats songs across all albums )

    Rakim was wrong
    Coldcut was right

  • TopSlob
