This Is Hip Hop Remix Contest Part II: Week 2

So you think you got game, huh? Week 1 was just just enough to get your feet wet. This week, we’re stepping things up a bit. All week I’ve been listening to the new remix album put out by Omer Saar, The Green Album. If you all haven’t checked it, make sure you do. So in dedication to The Green Album, this week’s contest will have a sample stipulation. All remixes entered for Week 2 must contain a sample from an Al Green track. It’s your choice as to which Al Green track you wish to sample; he’s got a huge discography, but your remix must sample Al Green. It doesn’t have to be the only sample, but should be the main sample. When you submit your remix, please tell us which Al Green song you sampled.

The Rules

This Week’s Track

So for the acapella you all are putting Al Green up against, we’re going back to 1996. Or should I say down south to 1996? Yup, it’s time to remix some Outkast! Off their sophomore album, ATLiens, we’re gonna remix the first single, “Elevators (Me & You)“. The song was originally produced by Outkast and Earthtone Ideas and sampled Parliament’s “Come In Out of The Rain”. Download the acapella and album version below and good luck!

The cut-off to submit your remix is
Sunday, June 15, 2008 @ 3:00pm EDT

9 atlas June 9, 2008 at 12:16 am

i had a hard time but i sampled, “I’m so tired of being alone” by al green and “In the rain” http://www.zshare.net/audio/13328130709065a0/

10 Tokyo Cigar June 9, 2008 at 12:30 am

Peace here’s my joint. Hope yall feel it.

http://www.zshare.net/audio/133281634c8f0f92/

Damn Kev i have’nt sampled anything but vocals for like the past 9 years. You getting the exclusiveness with this joint.

I used “i’m so lonesome i could cry” and “free at last”

Nice choice with Outkast it was fun to flip that track.

Peace

11 S.T.T.R.E.S.S. June 9, 2008 at 12:35 am

What’s up Kev and the rest of the producing squad. I’m back for week two.I’m really feeling this contest because it forces me to challenge myself.Again good luck to everybody and here’s my track.I made my beat to Al Green’s- Simply Beautiful. Give me feedback. Holla!

12 G.C. June 9, 2008 at 1:51 am

Here’s my joint:

http://www.zshare.net/audio/1333106042960387/

Main Sample: “People Get Ready” (live version – Youtube)
Chorus Sample: “People Get Ready” (Mavis Staples / Al Green – Youtube)

I am feeling these submissions so far for real!

Tokyo, you know we go back and this is the first beat I’ve EVER heard you sample! Keep doin’ it big!

13 S.T.T.R.E.S.S. June 9, 2008 at 2:06 am

Yo G.C. that was hot. This ia actually the first time I ever sampled.

14 G.C. June 9, 2008 at 2:15 am

S.T.T.R.E.S.S., you did your thing for real! The way you chopped it with the violin coming in and out is exactly how I like it!

Ask Tokyo how much I sample violins – I even hired a homeless (but extremely talented) violin player to record samples in my studio for $50 once!

15 RNP June 9, 2008 at 2:17 am

wassup everyone

i enjoy the stipulation deal, helps narrow everything down!
I sampled Al Green’s “For the Good Times”

http://www.zshare.net/audio/133316705a6c3c3f/

good luck to everyone

16 S.T.T.R.E.S.S. June 9, 2008 at 2:25 am

I appreciate that G.C. thats really on some hustle & flow shit what you did for those violin samples ha ha ha ha. Im really feeling that.

17 S.T.T.R.E.S.S. June 9, 2008 at 2:26 am

Yo, whats up Tokyo

18 S.T.T.R.E.S.S. June 9, 2008 at 2:37 am

Yo RNP, you gave that track a family get together type feel. Nice work

19 RNP June 9, 2008 at 3:28 am

waddup S.T.T.R.E.S.S. , thank.. thats what I was looking for- something chill and easy to listen to.

You did your thing too, real mellow..

20 Beewirks June 9, 2008 at 3:34 am

http://www.zshare.net/audio/13342681c2637d45/

24 One Mic June 9, 2008 at 10:51 am

Here is my contribution for the week. The Sample is “Let’s get together”. I have to admit I was a little scared flipping that one, because I have heard a few good takes on it, but I think it turned out alright! One Love to all my fellow sleep deprived beat junkies!

http://www.zshare.net/audio/1334978217e60511/

25 Isbjerg June 9, 2008 at 11:21 am

Damn, y’all are fast…. I spend the entire night listening to Al Green and ended up with a winner – “I can’t get next to you” fitted Outkast like a glove and made room for a break or two… Im very satified with the result…
http://www.zshare.net/audio/13351170b685943f/

Good luck to all…. I feel the passion for this between all of us, and may the best cracker win…

26 Mystro June 9, 2008 at 11:57 am

Hey What’s up ….Here’s my remix and i used Al’s Light My Fire from the Get Next To You album ..

Good Luck

27 Tokyo Cigar June 9, 2008 at 12:21 pm

A yo whut up GC. Yo those were the fly Roland and Yamaha motif days LOL ( good times, good times ) Yeah son i remember the violin joints you flipped back in the days. ILL beats, FLY rhyme cyphers, UNHOLY amounts of trees and Newsradio reruns on tape.

Yo your beat is knocking. ( as always ) Nice touch with the live sample. The joint is that fly sit on the porch with the click and light up vibe.

Yo s.t.t.r.e.s.s. your joint was stupid hard too. I loved the bass drops building up with the organ. Fit the vibe ill.

I’m bout to roll up and check out the rest of these remixes. Peace to everybody putting in work.

Keep doing the Dhalsim ( yoga fire all day )

Peace

28 Isbjerg June 9, 2008 at 12:22 pm

Mystro : Nice one… Very Pete Rockish… Soul brotha for sure….

29 G.C. June 9, 2008 at 12:27 pm

I am really impressed w all the submissions so far! ATLiens is still one of my all-time favorite albums, and entering this contest brought back many memories!

(Kev – Pick a song from Redman’s “Muddy Waters” and I’ll love ya to death! Ha!)

Tokyo, good look! I still have the freestyles and live shows from “GC’s Attic” and 94th Aero in the stash. I’ll make a burn if you don’t have it anymore.

30 Kevin June 9, 2008 at 12:38 pm

Redman, huh? I haven’t run across any acapellas yet, but I’ll keep my eye out!

31 G.C. June 9, 2008 at 12:57 pm

Oh, it’s all good – that was just my nostalgia talking!

Tokyo – you need to sample more, you chop beautifully!

32 S.T.T.R.E.S.S. June 9, 2008 at 12:58 pm

What up, man its just monday and the heat has already been turned on.Yo Fiasco, check your track or the download, because at about 1:18 I think it started skipping but it was still nice. What I had to do was use the given to me after the upload is finished and listen to it before I put it on the site.I’m new to this uploading thing put im paranoid of two things. One,I’m scared it might have glitched up during the process. Two, sound quality every player sounds different.Hey Beewirks, its still hard to download you might need to try uploading it again.I was finally able to download it, but I had to use my Real Player to do it.Good recovery nice track. And Cralias you brought the abstract flavor.Yo One Mic, that track is crazy laid back, defintely riding music. And yes,I am sleep deprived but its all for the love of this music.I worked on the track from the time Kev put the download up til like 12:00am its all good. What up Isbjerg, boy you gave it that liquor house feel.Hold it down.Mystro…oh weeeeee you brought that bounce
Holla.Peace

33 Mystro June 9, 2008 at 1:05 pm

Thank you Isbjerg …. your ’s remix is on deck….. good one…

34 Beewirks June 9, 2008 at 1:18 pm
35 S.T.T.R.E.S.S. June 9, 2008 at 1:23 pm

Yo Kev, what up.Yall got your work cut out for you.I dont know how I came across your site, but im glad I did. Thanks for the opportunity.Yo I got an idea for a future project later down the line even if i’m not involved.Holla at me when youre ready to hear about it.

36 Mystro June 9, 2008 at 1:23 pm

P.S. Thank you S.T.T.R.E.S.S. ….and your’s was very soulful…

37 G.C. June 9, 2008 at 1:34 pm

I agree, the judges are gonna have a hard time w this one!

RNP – I really love the vibe, laid back dutchie feel!
Isbjerg – I love how you used the 3/4 measure on top of the accapella! And that “Ahhh!” at the beginning of each bar really works well w it! Good job!
Fiasco – Sounds like something off O.C.’s “Word Life” album – I like it!
Mystro – brought that FUNK! Head knocker for sure!

Peace to everyone, great job so far!

38 S.T.T.R.E.S.S. June 9, 2008 at 1:35 pm

65 Husan Husani June 10, 2008 at 9:58 am

i think i’ve found me a formula for sampling, Me & Al.lol!

I’ve never heard an Al Green song before so i had no idea where to start. So, when i did a search for 1 of his songs that i could sample, 100’s came up! I decide to sample “Thought it out” as it was the first 1. So I Sampled it, Flipped it, and added my own S*** to it! hope you like this ppl!

Enjoy: http://www.zshare.net/audio/1340154032849a10/

Peace!

73 One Mic June 10, 2008 at 5:46 pm

Nice Job E.B. Productions, you found exactly the right feel for the chorus in my opinion. If that would have been a b-side back in the days, Outkast’s pockets would have been even bigger. And yours! -One

74 Isbjerg June 10, 2008 at 7:26 pm

eb productions : I dig that 90’s feeling…A straight up remix..
Atlas : A Funny Fusion…
tokyo cigar : Boy, did you do mr. Green justice… I like…
S.T.T.R.E.S.S.: Somebody get big boi on the phone – We got a hit here…
G.C. : A nice jazzy feeling… one love
RNP : Some more Al would be groovin’, but I feel you… a funky ending..
Fiasco : Thats the summer thang right there….
cralias : Damn.. Now that’s different..
One Mic : Good job – Quit your day job, you’re meant to do this…

75 S.T.T.R.E.S.S. June 10, 2008 at 7:38 pm

What up yall, this ish is getting crazy.Yo Kev, its like everybody was waiting for you to do this ha ha.SND, that track had a reminiscing feel to it.D.Bruce,yours really put me in a setting of a schoolyard playground in the city.Info,I was looking for a Fleetwood with the spare tire on the trunk to pull up after listening to yours.By the way, you didnt include your sample.Husan Husani, that was on some Outkast unplugged type vibe.Ill-mannered,that had a nice old school feel to it.Keyz Fargo, that was real smooth.EB Prod.,you gave it a Sade/Al Green vibe. Evrybody is still dropping it like its hot. K.I.M.P.(keep it moving playas)

76 S.T.T.R.E.S.S. June 10, 2008 at 7:41 pm

Appreciate dat Isbjerg for real, Big Ups

I appreciate the feedback, Isbjerg. I’ll try to give everybody some feedback when I can, but for now I gotta keep on working my day job:) -One

78 G.C. June 10, 2008 at 9:07 pm

I am really feeling Keys Fargo’s production – I love the 7th note harmonics!

Mad respect to everyone submitting so far! This has been on a crazy dynamic since the restrictions were put on week two…it’s like everyone (myself included) was amped up to produce and submit cause they wanted to get their sample in before anyone else could use it…plus I think it made everyone hungrier too!

All I know is, submissions are all on point, judges are gonna have a tough time w/ this one, and I can’t wait for week three now!

79 G.C. June 10, 2008 at 9:09 pm

Peace to Isjberg, thanks for the input!

80 infO June 10, 2008 at 9:14 pm

sttress-thanks.yeah i get what youre sayin…..the track is called “strong as death”. there was about 30 crazy samples i cut but i liked the ones i used the best…..

81 Kevin June 10, 2008 at 10:01 pm

Just for the record, I haven’t finished listening to the week 1 remixes. I can’t believe how popular this thread it. Glad I could provide a playground for you all!

82 One Mic June 11, 2008 at 12:35 am

I was just wondering what everybody else would like to see as the next acapella. Personally I would love to do Craig Mack’s “Flava in ya” ear or ODB’s “Shimmy Ya”. What do you guys think? One-

83 S.T.T.R.E.S.S. June 11, 2008 at 12:43 am

87 DutchMasters June 11, 2008 at 11:26 am

After the Green Album and this, every Al Green song may have been sampled.

http://www.zshare.net/audio/13433792f3e41c9f/

A lot of smoke puffing out of these tracks. I used a couple of tracks off of Al Green’s new album, Lay It Down “Wild about You” and “What More Do you Want From Me”. The man has still got it.

89 BGeezie June 11, 2008 at 11:35 am

Yo Falcord- have you heard Getting Out the Game by Kanye West and Consequence? Your track is like a dope homage to that one. Same back and forth rapping- nice man. Got those biggie drums too. Very chilled out song.

90 Falcord June 11, 2008 at 11:54 am

sorry I post the wrong link

there is the good one

sorry

peace

91 Falcord June 11, 2008 at 11:56 am

There is one of my all time favorite Kanye tracks…”Out the Game” feat Consequence and John Legend…

BGeezie hit it right on the head – Falcord, you did it big! I really like the DutchMasters remix too, it’s got that ill Hill Street Blues meets P Funk feel…plus I like the way you switched up the verses…great job both of you!

93 DutchMasters June 11, 2008 at 2:21 pm

Keys Fargo, you beat me to that one sample- I changed up my beat because of you, but I’ll bet you can still hear the same loop. Peace.

94 Falcord June 11, 2008 at 5:41 pm

Thanks G.C and BGeezie.

I knew that West use this song to do something but i’ve never heard the track “getting out the game”.

Never stop loving good music

I found out that Just Blaze (Memphis Bleek’s “Straight Path”) has used it, as well as Miri-Ben Ari (Consequence’s “I’ve Been Waiting on You”) and Brand Nubian (”Maybe One Day”). Peace man. Beautiful track. Awesome intro you got.

98 Falcord June 11, 2008 at 7:10 pm

Nice track blinky, I like that style.

I sampled this song too one time to do an other track.

also used by RZA but i don’t remeber the track

peace

99 blinky June 11, 2008 at 7:27 pm

Thanx Dutchmasters and falcord, i knew for the brand nubian, not for the rest. While working on it i realized that the band Cassius used it as an intro for their track “Feeling for you”.I’m not surprised that rza used it.The original track is simply beautiful.

Peace.

I keep posting “thats besides the point” posts on here…sorry everyone. But, I just got into this contest and that C17 remix of “GUESS WHOS BACK” izzz so ILL that it actually brought tears to my eye!!!

131 Tokyo Cigar June 13, 2008 at 1:23 pm

OH MY GOD! Cats are repping.

20 Keys i love the way you mixed the hook with the sample. Yours was mad haunting.

Tek your beat was beautiful evil mixed with some hellfire hot drums

Abstrkt yours was zoned out. Very calm and sinister.

Yo Dutch you murdered it. The vocal switch ups, the funk spilling out of the sides of the beat and arrangement killed it but when the beat switched up i almost passed out. Banging use of Al’s new stuff.

I still love the s.t.t.r.e.s.s. and Gc joints too.

Peace

Hope ya’ll feelin’ the remix. I sampled Al Green’s “I’m Glad You’re Mine”. I even sampled the drums from this song that made “I Got A Story To Tell” and “Dead Wrong” classic tracks. By the way Kev, you made DJs round these parts go nuts because they finally got the “Elevators” acapella.
