This Is Hip Hop Remix Contest Part II: Week 6

The half way mark… counting down to week 12.  So far we’ve hit 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, and 1999.  This week we’re hittin’ up 1992.  This is a special year for me as it was the year I graduated from high school.  I was gonna throw another sample stipulation at you all, cuz I’m really enjoying listening to those Stevie tracks.  But we’ll open the production up this week.  I really want your full imagination for this classic!

Don’t forget to read the rules; especially if you’re new…

The Rules

This Week’s Track

This week’s track is “Passin’ Me By” by The Pharcyde.  I thought dropping the sample compilation earlier last week might have been a hint.  No introduction needed.  Show us what you go!Download the tracks below and good luck!

The cut-off to submit your remix is
Sunday, July 13, 2008 @ 3:00pm EDT

what? you serious? damn, this song can’t be remixed, that’s like trying to make a remake of “citizen kane” or “Scarface” in movies…

just saying, y’all raisin the bar higher every week, I’m curious to see how folks will deal with this one…

2 Kevin July 6, 2008 at 12:33 pm

That’s the whole point! LOL

3 Isbjerg July 6, 2008 at 1:33 pm

Imma try to put all the love in this one… If we do this, we gotta do this right, or not at all.. It’s gotta ooze with love and happiness… Good luck to y’all and see you next week…

4 G.C. July 6, 2008 at 6:48 pm

I don’t mean to jump out the gate so fast, but

(a) I had my first Sunday off in months,
(b) inspiration struck, and
(c) I’m really happy with the end result.

Here’s my remix:

http://www.zshare.net/audio/1482446034fe1bf3/

I tried to capture the feel of the group as closely as I could. I really hope I did the original justice. Please enjoy.

5 dj juls July 6, 2008 at 7:08 pm

yo…i knew this was comin…i love pharcyde…i aint playin with this one….ima come up wit some hot stuff…see y’all soon

6 nanigan July 6, 2008 at 7:19 pm

gc, talk about hurdling the gate. i definitely think the dust is officially brushed off your equipment and 88 elements is in full swing in some form or another. i’m loving those breaks and the whole vibe stays true to the bizzare ride.

i started cheesing like an idiot here at work when i read this challenge. this comes off one of my top favorite albums of all time. good choice.

7 Bennie Anderson July 6, 2008 at 8:03 pm

Yo, G.C. That’s a tight remix. Oh, by the way what type of equipment and/or software you are working with. I enjoy listening this remix, once again great work.P.S. (WHAT BPM YOU USED)

8 G.C. July 6, 2008 at 8:08 pm

Thanks Nanigan and Bennie!

Bennie, I am currently using Fruity Loops for sequencing and Sound Forge for sampling/looping. I no longer have my tables, mixers or keyboards I used to. BPM I used was 86.25.

9 G.C. July 6, 2008 at 8:15 pm

Oh, and Nanigan, I really appreciate you saying that about 88E… I have been kinda down about not having all my equipment from before, but I’m glad to be able to work with what I have and share with everyone for sure.

10 infO July 6, 2008 at 8:18 pm

yo….what up gc. i got on this one quick too. had ideas instantly. nice work on the stevie joint last week too. guitar sample was sick……

well, hope yall like jazz shit……this ones on the jazzy tip. i cant help it, its the kansas city in me! but yeah, no samples on this joint. all original. peace yall. STEADY!

11 G.C. July 6, 2008 at 8:21 pm

What up infO! Love the harmonies in your track, and the drums hit very nicely! Great job!

12 Jack Nickelz July 6, 2008 at 9:22 pm

For this one, I was going for a different feel. So I got my Kill Bill intro and Wu Tangish type sample. Hope you like.

13 Bennie Anderson July 6, 2008 at 9:58 pm

Great work info, the beat is hot. I might create an original track too.

14 Bennie Anderson July 6, 2008 at 10:04 pm

Jack Nickelz, great sample and killer beat.

15 One Mic July 6, 2008 at 10:24 pm

Damn, you guys are all shootin hollow points this week.

G.C. – that was as always quality product.

Info – Really enjoyed the track. The beats mood paired up with the acapella is on point.

Jack Nickelz – you’re a dark horse, ain’t ya?. That track is fire. I wish you would have joined us earlier.

I’ll get to work this afternoon, so another One Mic Remix should be up soon! One-

16 Isbjerg July 7, 2008 at 5:17 am

I went with the feeling and emotional vibe in the Pharcyde classic and I found some sounds, I couldn’t let go again and It matched the direction I wanted from the remix…

http://www.zshare.net/audio/14847178faeddc62/

Now what am I gonna do for the rest of the week ?

17 One Mic July 7, 2008 at 9:47 am

Waddup everyone, here is my track for week 6. I hope y’all enjoy it. All feedback appreciated. One-

18 G.C. July 7, 2008 at 11:26 am

Jack – Love the intro, and the beat really does sound like a rza track! Good job!

Isbjerg – Again, really enjoy the feel like last week…embodies a bizzare ride at a carnival or something! Very cool!

One Mic – “A Week Ago” sample works really well with the vocals, and I love the way you switched up the chorus to match the instrumental! Awesome!

19 One Mic July 7, 2008 at 11:39 am

thanks G.C. – the sample is actually “the ballad for a fallen soldier” by the isley brothers. One Love-

For those who have heard mine already, there is almost nothing new here. For those who have not, this is the correct version.

22 DutchMasters July 7, 2008 at 3:37 pm

One Mic, G.C. was saying it’s the same sample as the song “Week Ago” by Jay-Z and Too Short. You got some nice strings in there; good job.

23 Kehmos July 7, 2008 at 3:47 pm

Hey everyone, great remixes so far!

This remix was done in 2005, the beat is even older, 2002 or 2003.

Let me know what you think!

24 ill-mannered. July 7, 2008 at 4:40 pm

Hi everybody!
Man, I LOVE the original!
@Kev: If you consider wishlists for future remix contests… ;-) What about some classic Public Enemy- or De La Soul- stuff?
@ G.C.: Very relaxed version! And I mean ”relaxed” in a good way! Soothing samples which match perfect with the beats you used. Sounds like the good old 90ies!!
@ Jack Nickelz: Man! Great use of that Kill Bill sample! Funny thing is, I saw both parts of that Tarantino movie and thought of sampling bits of the soundtrack in the near future. Well, you were first and did an awesome job!
@ InfO: Love that beat!
@Isbjerg: This is surely something different! Nice new interpretation, slightly reminds me of music by bands like Múm or Sigur Ros.
@Fiasco: Nice idea with the echo in the refrain!
@Kehmos: Really like the way, you chopped the samples. Again a nice old-skool-90ies-feeling!

Well, here’s my remix. Tried to give it a “gloomy atmosphere”. Main sample is by a band called “Storyback” the song’s name is “Psych-Out”. Also threw in some human beatbox samples (2nd half of the song”). Hope you guys like it and maybe give me some feedback!

Take care,
Ill-mannered.

27 Dj Mike Deck July 7, 2008 at 5:27 pm

this is one one of the hardest songs to remix! the original was so perfect, so def a good choice. haha i love the competition on this board…wish i found it sooner. Gonna get one up soon, good stuff so far.

28 Odranoel July 7, 2008 at 5:27 pm

Here’s is mine.
http://www.zshare.net/audio/14879759125e4684/

The remixes are great. G.C. really laid back, Jack i loved the intro and the sample.

Peace

29 Isbjerg July 7, 2008 at 5:50 pm

GC – As always, a quality remix with nice feels and holds the 90ish mood…I like the change of drums, who also keeps the 90 sound..

Info – This remix is a hit.. Straight forward and a touch of pharcyde i like, reminded me of the energy from pandemonuim and Soul Power – Nice job…

Jack Nickelz – Nice touch… I had mixed emtions with this one, mainly because of the messy arrangement but I really like the cinematic touch on it, and it stands original – The best idea ever…

One Mic – Now why didnt I go with the idea of changing the chorus… I did consider it, but forgot about in the construction… A summer hit… I can hear this version over and over again..

Fiasco – Im a little lost in your remix… I like the beat, but the damn rappers are jumping in and out on que ?

Kehmos – Not reaching me, but I do like the samples…

Ill-Mannered – I would love the instrumental for that one… What a journey – My first thought was a NY Beat to a LA band, and was a bit disturbed throughout the remix, bu I could totally hear Aesop Rock or C Rayz on this fuky beat…

Atlas – Im lost… Guide me back, I know there’s some error or some hidden message here…

30 DJ Mix Masta July 7, 2008 at 6:12 pm

Whatz hood y’all. I went for a lil bit of an old school feel wit tha beat. kept it simple but will catch u.

works for me,atlas. Love the sample, always have. The acapella needs to hit a second earlier ,though. nice one!

35 atlas July 7, 2008 at 10:33 pm

ok thanks i guess its fine then

36 G.C. July 8, 2008 at 12:05 am

Thanks for the love everyone – I really tried to match the feel of the original with this one, and I am really glad that people went different directions…cause it definitely gives a diversity to the contest that makes it all worthwhile!

Fiasco – Like your take on it, vocals running away just a little from the track but good instrumental!

Kehmos – Nice chopping! Agree with ill-mannered, very early nineties like what I tried to accomplish. Great job!

ill-mannered – Love the standard intro bleeding into the dark beat, very interesting direction for the instrumental! Good mix!

atlas – Love the sample, agree w One Mic…the sample needs to be moved forward one second and should sync nicely!

odranoel – Couldn’t get yours to load no matter how many tries, I will try again when the server is running better.

BTW, if you haven’t noticed, Zshare has been jacked up so just keep reloading the pages until they play, hopefully they will get their server in better condition soon!

41 DutchMasters July 8, 2008 at 3:30 pm

Peace everyone-

My addition to the pack. The original track was jazzy; I tried to go for straight jazz. The original track’s sample is just about the best loop in hip hop, so just putting something out there is enough of an accomplishment.

http://www.zshare.net/audio/149346106574b680/

Odranoel: Wild beat, but without the acapella in sync, it gets a little messy. Try using a program like Sony Acid Pro which will really help syncing up beats. Peace though- youre doing your thing.

Atlas: love hearing that eddie kendricks sample. My favorite use of it might be Kanye’s beat for 213: “Another Summer.”

Doni Jo: A real remix! nice man- I’m feeling those drums. Next time just upload the song- it makes it a lot easier for us to hear your track.

Mix Masta, you gave us that modern-day Pharcyde- nice kicks. If only I had a car and a sound system…

Tommylux: Great intro, 48 Hours? And your hook was something else.

Kehmos: You got nice touch. I would love to hear what you could do with this with a brand new track. If thats what you were up on five years ago, what you got now? Can’t go wrong with those strings and a little piano there too though..

ill-mannered: I wanted to do something dark too, but couldnt quite get it; this is real creepy and catchy at the same time.

42 Odranoel July 8, 2008 at 4:45 pm

Hey dutchmaster,

Thanks for the comment. I started using the fruityloops, can i sync the acapella with it? If so, how can i do it?

43 Tommylux July 8, 2008 at 5:14 pm

Haha, Dutch, well spotted, it is 48 Hours, but only part of it.. regardless, how many times did you see that movie to make that one out or is it Eddie’s quote coupled to his unique voice that’s just so memorable? :-D

44 dj juls July 8, 2008 at 6:34 pm

this isn’t fair u kno…passin me by??remix that…shit is a classic yo…i made it a bit funky instead of its initial soul vibe…

45 DutchMasters July 8, 2008 at 8:02 pm

DJ Juls, have you heard My Life by Fabolous, produced by Kanye? The last verse of your track had me buggin’ like Fatlip. Nice touch man.

46 DutchMasters July 8, 2008 at 8:03 pm

Odranoel, check youtube for how-to videos; I know a lot of people on here use fruity loops for syncing, I just haven’t used it for that.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f7Z51Gpr3zg
http://www.maketunes.com/forums/using-acapellas-in-fruity-loops

Tommy, I think Nolte’s voice was what I initially caught, but then again, how many times has Eddie been in prison in a movie? Great movie though. Takes place
in San Francisco where I’m from.

Eddie’s saying he wants to come back and do a 4th Beverly Hills Cop, but I don’t believe he has it in him anymore. Man, he used to be untouchable.

50 DutchMasters July 9, 2008 at 10:14 am

Od, nice man, it’s definitely getting better. The bpm for this track is 86.25. They only get easier the more remixes you do. The easiest ones are guys like Yung Joc who have the least complex flows. Another site I like to use to find bpms is

http://www.all8.com/tools/bpm.htm

Fiasco, nice beat man. Check out the song “In Cold Blood” by Scarface, produced by Kanye (he and Just Blaze may have sampled every song). Peace.

54 G.C. July 9, 2008 at 6:44 pm

Hey gang, I am in the process of a move so I haven’t had much time to listen, but what I have heard so far is still coming out great!

Love the vibe of DJ Juls’, especially the last verse! Ill!

Dutch, love the switch ups and the incorporation of the different blends as the song goes along! Great job! Oh, BTW, just off the strength of the tutorial you posted, I went out and upgraded my FL3 to FL8 and bought me a turntable…I really appreciate that for real fam!

55 Jack Nickelz July 9, 2008 at 7:08 pm

Just let me say thanx to everyone who has been voting, not just for me, but for all the producers. I’m glad people like the vibe and direction that I went with my version of a classic song.

Can’t wait to hear what everyone else is gonna bring.

56 dj juls July 9, 2008 at 7:10 pm

thx y’all…im feelin everyone’s joints right now…but pharcyde’s passin me by can’t not be remixed literally man/…best of luck to erbody..shouts to one mic, isjberg, dutchmasters, GC….

57 DutchMasters July 9, 2008 at 9:04 pm

Nice GC, FL8 is nice- I just started using it. I hope everyone checks out the soundgoodizer in the effects on the mixer. I’m excited to hear what you do with that turntable. All I got is virtual DJ, but it’s a pretty impressive program for what it is.

Juls, good look homie.

58 G.C. July 9, 2008 at 9:12 pm

I used to have Technics M2Ks, but never got great at stylish scratching, just basic scratching to blend a vocal sample, beat sample or break record. I decided to go with a more direct approach with this table and I got a Numark turntable that digitally records directly into the comp as an audio file through USB instead of having to use wave editing software to record from my old mixers. I hope it works out, I’ve got CRATES to dig through! I still have to get my hands dirty in FL8 but I’m sure it will open up tons more options than my old FL3…

If I remember Dutch, you live in MD near Tokyo C. right? I’m glad ya’ll linked up cause Tokyo is one of my closest, and I miss living out there and hanging with the crew for sure! Much love fam!

59 DutchMasters July 9, 2008 at 9:19 pm

My biggest problem is that I don’t take tracks through a turntable like that, and usually just use mp3’s instead. It just doesn’t cut it. The digging takes a lot less time, but the fun of it is gone. Me and tokyo are putting together something real special; I’m pretty excited about it, and hopefully I can get Kevin to throw it up on here when it’s done.

It’s hot as hell out here right now, so unless you’re in Texas, you’re probably doing all right.

60 G.C. July 9, 2008 at 9:23 pm

I hear that for sure. I can’t wait to hear what you guys have in the stash, keep me posted and hit me up on my myspace with updates if you can!

Well, I just opened the turntable and it doesn’t have a transformer, so without a mixer and a direct connection it’s gonna be straight shuffle scratches unless I manually delete some audio in a wave editor or FL. Ah well, for $160 you can’t beat the price. Best I can do w/ my current financial situation.

Hey Reason, that was on some Shaft type ish.Very action packed.
I went through about 3-4 beats before I got the one i’m gonna post.My first one I used one of the three original samples for passing me by-a Quincy Jones joint.I battled very hard with the idea of using it.I’ll probably post that later this week as a bonus remix so you guys can hear it.I think I did a good job on it,I think I flipped the helll out of the sample.Anyway, heres my donation, hope yall like it.Give feedback

Holla!

to G.C , go for fl5 or 6,
i’m using a bunch of vst-plug-ins in fl5
if i try to do the same in fl8, it almost exploded!
I think those new features in it (needed?) eats your cpu even if you not using them, I worked with fl3 since ‘99
i think its still one of the best in combination with the right plug-ins. only the sound quality it puts out is prehistoric, best choice 5 or 6!

love the chorus,nice job!

69 Beatstreet July 10, 2008 at 5:25 pm

While I’m here I took a listen to almost everybody’s joint. Nice use of samples Atlas (Eddie Kendricks), Fiasco (Gladys Knight), One Mic (Isley), Dutchmasters (Brenda Russell), GC (on the tip of my tongue, but can’t spit it out lol). Alot of good mixes here. Some of my favorites are Kinectic, Jack Nickelz (wonder what song you sample from Kill Bill), Info, Reason, Isbjerg(simple but nice bell/xylophone sample). Nice beatbox mix DJ Mix Master. Sttress you have the best jazz mix period.

70 DutchMasters July 10, 2008 at 5:55 pm

Beatstreet, you know your stuff- I’m going to have to start digging deeper. I should have left that record alone when I heard Still Not a Playa in the song “A Little Bit of Love,” but sometimes a sound just gets stuck with you.

Your track is nice, especially the chorus- just sync up that acapella and you’re good to go. Peace man.

Blinky-Like the way you mixed it up.It had a funky/dancehall feel to it.

Lets keep it popping fellas

Later!

74 ''BLINKY'' July 10, 2008 at 8:46 pm

Thanx for the comments, info & Sttress, i’m glad you dig my sauce. For info’s info, i used labi siffre’s “I Got The” for the verses and Gladdy Anderson & Lyn Taitt & The Jets “Love Me Forever” for the jamaïcan hook. And damn, i struggled with that hook, i even tried to put some jimi hendrix solo’ chops.

Thanks Dutchmasters. I’m a faithful digital crate digger and old head so my library is pretty extensive. Also thanks to Dutchmasters and Sttress for the advice about the syncing. I knew it needed to be done better, but I’m still pretty new to this producing/mixing thing. Anyway, Blinky nice use of the Labi sample like you said and I love the chorus sample (I’m going to have to get me a copy of that for my library). Oh and I sampled Vincent Montana’s Warp Factor II.

76 Jack Nickelz July 11, 2008 at 11:40 am

For those who wanted to know what Kill Bill song that i sampled.

Meiko Kaji – the Flower Of Carnage

86 G.C. July 12, 2008 at 4:04 pm

Abstrakt – thanks fam, I’m just glad to be part of the Nottinghan movement!

I am at work and haven’t had time to listen to submissions but as always the heat is on (can we say Screwball?)

Oh yeah and I had to return the USB turntable, there was a MAJOR delay between the noise at the needle and the sound from the speakers so no scratching available or real-time sampling. I do know what I need to buy now so that will be a future project.

87 S.T.T.R.E.S.S. July 12, 2008 at 5:27 pm

Whats up folks. Its less than 24 hrs left,so jump on board.

Mystro- that is a sinister jazz feel to that remix.Good going.

91 S.T.T.R.E.S.S. July 12, 2008 at 9:25 pm

Whats up once again.G.C.,thanks for posting that,i’ve tryed to post a comment, but I dont have a myspace account.I’ll probably set up one in the next day or so.

Earlier this week,I mentioned that my first remix,I did’nt post it.One main reason was, I didnt feel right doing it to one of the original samples. It was more of a challenge to myself to see how well I could flip the sample. I only started sampling when I entered this contest.Anyway,I said I would probably post it as a bonus remix, well here it is and I hope you enjoy it.
F.Y.I.,this is a list of the samples used in Pharcyde’s Passing me by:

Quincy Jones- Summer in the city(the one I used for this remix)
125th Street Congress-Weather Report
Jimi Hendrix-Are You Experienced

98 Beatstreet July 13, 2008 at 1:04 am

Nice sample use Dyno and Goosebumps.
Goosebumps it sounds like you used Love Unlimited – Move Me No Mountain, but I could easily be wrong. Dyno I don’t know what sample you use, but it’s fire. Sttress nice bonus mix, but you’re jazz one is still better. Garcia love your horn sample.

102 GooseBumps July 13, 2008 at 11:54 am

Hey Kev, I had to fix my last chorus a bit so Im reposting my remix. Please use this one for the contest, appreciate it!

S.T.R.E.S.S, One Mic, thanks for the love.Im feeling y’alls too. The thing about this song is you can flip it so many different ways and it still comes out dope!

Beatstreet- The sample I used was from the “The Mack” Soundtrack. The song is called ” I can sho give you love” by the great Willie Hutch.

Peace!

Damn,Passing me By is such a classic that all I could hear was the original beat in my head to the lyrics when attempting this – but I had a go anyway.
