We’re making a second pass through 1997 again, so check this week’s track below!
Don’t forget to read the rules; especially if you’re new…
This Week’s Track
This week’s track is “Victory” from Puffy, Biggie, and Busta. Off of Puffy’s No Way Out album, the track samples Bill Conti’s “Going The Distance”, which gave the track that champion vibe. This should be an interesting one to remix as the possibilities to make this one your own are endless.
The cut-off to submit your remix is
Sunday, July 20, 2008 @ 3:00pm EDT.

Man! Got no time this week for remixing. Gotta learn for some important exams. Everybody wish me luck! Have fun remixing. I’m sure you all will do a good job!
Gonna return in 1 or 2 weeks.
Peace,
ill-mannered.
oooo shitttt im about to kill it!!! lol
THIS SHOULD BE FUN…. as usual… Good luck to yall.. Go get em Ill mannered..
awwww man, I already got some joints cooking for this one.
Keep those 9th wonder samples coming, i just started visiting the site and i’ve been downloading non-stop.
Amazing work…..i’ll be checking in daily from now on !!
Thanks Goosebumps for the sample id. As you said Willie Hutch is great as I have a good collection of his songs. I think everyone has Mack’s Stroll/The Getaway from The Mack soundtrack. As for this week’s contest, I ironically already did a remix of this song so mine will be up shortly.
Well, after watching 300 I came up with this…
http://www.zshare.net/audio/152654623b7ab49b/
Y’all have to come correct on this one. If anybody is in the age range of 30-35 you all understand that this was a BIG (not Notorious) record when it came out. This record (and album) really did overshadow a lot of good music during this time. I remember Wu-Tang Forever came out within two weeks of this and was overlooked (on the mainstream level anyway). But, if I remember correctly both sold well.
Anyway…please come correct on this joint…I know yall will…can’t wait to hear ‘em.
Finally a Biggie track!!(Even if it does have Diddy on it). First of all just wanna say R.I.P to the “greatest rapper that ever lived” (in my humble opinion),and my personal favorite. Anyways, I wanted to give this track kind of a “real hip hop” feel to it.Im not too crazy about the original version, so here’s mine.
Peace!
http://www.zshare.net/audio/15271872daa849d7/
What a great choice. Good luck everyone!
Wow this one is hard ! If u f*ck up this one, it’ll be considered as blasphemy ! So say prayers brothers and let’s go to work…Good luck every one
I wanted to try something different – I’ve been waiting for a chance to play with that sample, and do my mix of it. Now, the acapellas used for this wasn’t the best quality, but I managed to put DMX, Meth and Red in my version.. Even though the sample is the same, I still consider it a remix for that azz…

Nice use of Willie Hutch’s Mother’s Theme Goosebumps. Isbjerg, I like how you mix in those verses. It gave it an “all-star” feel.
Thanks for the props Beatstreet,I had the samples chopped the night before and it just so happened that I was able to use it for this remix.

Look, I dont mean to be picky or create a bad vibe here, but we are dealing with a tough cookie here, so we need to be a little critic…
Jack Nickelz – I wasnt feeling it at first- It was a bit messy and chaotic, but with a change in arrangement could make it a classic, almost in line with ‘What more can I say’ with Jigga…
Phurcat the Terrabl and GooseBumps – Am I wrong or isn’t the vocals running ?
Doni Jo – Thanx for the whole package with pics of Biggie and yourself.. Nice choice of samples, Gangstarr used it in Much to Much – A quick listen, but nice….
Im not saying, that my remix is perfect, but I simply observed some small details and
Look Duke,
I’m not trying to be an asshole or anything but your opinion is exactly that; YOURS. I heard a couple spots in your remix that were a little shoty, also could be concidered “chasing”. You probally use some type of program that has a beat mapping function. I’m all the way ole’ skool. Blending by hand and ear is a little bit harder than clicking a mouse button(not to say anything is wrong w/ it). All I’m saying is don’t throw stones @ my Glass house unless Your Glass House is completly spotless.

I’m gonna be guest judging this week, so I am not going to be commenting on anybody’s work. I just had to post my version for your enjoyment though.
http://www.zshare.net/audio/153407016a2eacfa/
Again, good luck everyone!
Well Phurcat the Terrabl, it great to see that you can take some critic… I too do it the old school way, and thanx for pointing out my chasing – I will hear it again and check it out… If I offend you, maybe you’re not in the right business… There is no one to hold your hand all the way – I just thought it was okay to guide one another to get better results, but I will not mention you or your inputs again…
Kevin, I hope that im not out of line here, if so I apologize…

These are my views on the entries that have been entered so far.
G.C. – This is what I look for in a remix. Sometimes producers are so caught up in the original track, that they end up stay true to the original’s flow, thus not really remixing tracks. As I listen to your track it gave me a different feel from the original. It gave me a fresh outlook on the track which is what a remix should do. Thumbs up for a banga that should be getting some radio play.
Phurcat the Terrabl – I love the sample that you used. It gives a nice swagger to the song. I give you credit for doing things by ear. As a DJ I know how hard that is to do. Now the vocals are off in some parts. If you chop some of the vocals to line them up a little better then you would have a monster remix on your hands.
Doni jo – Listened to the track and know the sample as soon as it started. My problem with your remix is it sound more like you synced things up to a loop. I was looking for some changes. maybe a breakdown or two.
Isbjerg – You pretty much used the sample in almost the same way as the original. The only difference is you add vocals and your lack of hard drums to go with it. That is the problem when you go and use the same samples for a remix, unless you bring some hard drums, you lose alot of heat. I wish you would of put down harder drums and flip the sample different if you were gonna use the same one.
GooseBumps – Man, this was a nice summertime track right here. The beat made me want to go get some Ice Tea or Lemonade. You’re only problem was the vocals weren’t matching in some parts. Tighten that up and you got a nice summer time jam.
With that being said a little improvement here and there we got some strong heat bringers for this time around.
I’m not a producer or DJ. I’m a web/marketing/video editing guy that loves hip hop and enjoys creating remixes/mash-ups and being creative.
I did a biggie remix cd a couple of years ago and this was my version of Victory.
I’m sure a critical ear could easily tear apart my stuff and I’ll actually appreciate any criticism that can make me better.

Here’s mine, hope I brought that fire

Here is my entry minus Diddy.
http://www.zshare.net/audio/1537909342538f09/
EP – Yo, I like this…sample and everything works for me. Choice of sample was on point. And the way you put things together works. The Vocal is off in some points, but if you can fix that, you gotta classic on your hands.
Tommylux – WOW at the sample choice. Thumbs up on the switch from the intro to the verse. My only gripe is the chorus throws off the flow. Other then that good job.
@Isbjerg: you are totally NOT out of line. I was actually meaning to comment on your critiques earlier so I could applaud you. It takes a lot of balls to come out and dish out a critique, and you def gotta do it the right way as to not hurt anyone’s feelings. Some may look at your critiques as negative, but no one says a critique has to be positive.. in fact the best ones should be negative so cats can go back and rework their craft. You hit the nail on the head for most the ones you mention and you did it in a tasteful manner.
I do like keeping things positive, especially on the site, but I also like to keep things in perspective. I love the way you all respect each others work and provide comments on your peers’ remixes, but sometimes they are a little too positive. I usually read the comments before I listen to the remixes and sometimes I get to a remix and go back to the comment and say to myself, “WTF were they thinking?” Sorry for the ramble…
From the brilliant idea of Jack Nickelz, from the ramble of the board and from the extra time on my hands, I give you a bonus – Not for the competition ( It wouldn’t be fair to Jack, since it was his idea and it would be low and because I’ve already turned in mine and do like the allstar feel in it..)
But I had to bring it in to raise the bar.. I was smiling from ear to ear after blasting it loud outside and proud of my piece – Enjoy

Whatsup y’all. First of all let me say that I appreciate any and all criticism that is given to any of my tracks good or bad.Thats what Im here for, its only gonna make me better for it, and try to improve. Ive only been doing this since january so I know, theirs gonna be some bumps and bruises along the way, but Im cool with it. Again appreciate the feedback y’all.

Competition is ruff this time huh ? Guess when you f’in with biggie things got personal… I’ll try my best to bring my remix for this week even if i’m a little busy…
Anyway @ Phurcat the Terrabl : “What’s beef ? Beef is when u can’t take a critic on your beat, beef is when your post laying six feet deep… ” Just kidding y’all
peace fam
@Thomas: 30-35? man im 21 and i was bumpin this song when it came out lol. I must have been like 10 haha. I guess thats a positive point of having much older brothers (probably negative in some ppls eyes).
Anyway, heres my remix:

By no way did I mean any disrespect. I didn’t mean to come off as irogant or to has the Kanye syndrome. Music is as emotional to me as some peoples kids to them. If I came off as an asshole, not my intentions. At least somebody took the time to listen to it to hear the mistakes I made.

Nah, no harm at all Phurcat. You all keep doin your thang!
Yo whut up peoples. Been going through life ( and a wack internet connection ) so i was on the low.
Cats been killed it with the Pharcyde joint. Nice range of beats.
Yo could someone hit me with the tempo of the victory joint?
http://www.zshare.net/audio/1545384326eddcab/
Yo Tokyo I had it at 91.878 in Acid Pro. I wanted a real cinematic track- I tried the Fountain, Requiem for a Dream (but Lil Jon had beat me to it- peep Throw it Up off Kings of Crunk) so I went for a upbeat Touch It Remix style.
Isberg- I jacked your all star idea. Sounded nice homie.
Goosebumps- where have I heard these vocals before? Awesome, haunting. just sync up that acapella and you got a track Biggie raps on in heaven.
Jack, that 300 one was what I was going for too- super epic. It’s a little messy and the intro might be a little too long, but thats mostly due to how worthless Diddy is- but give me a louder snare and you got a monster.
Doni Jo- That’s funky. I get the feeling like the beats about to drop though, rather than being hit by it.
EP- those are the Victory drums, nice man.
S.2ITA- I like how you start it off with Busta. Monster kick. Another epic one, but let those crashes ring, instead of shortening them.
Yo, in the future, if you guys can label the actual name of your track with your name too, it makes it a lot easier to identify them when I download them all to itunes and make a playlist. Peace homies. great stuff.
http://www.zshare.net/audio/1545892680d989f7/
Enjoy.
Yo Dutch thats that slinky funk baseline masterpiece joint you did for Victory. It sounds like a fight scene from juice. I loved the orchestration you did. The line up you put was ill too. it sounds like a modern version of “were all in the same gang” i listened to it at least 4 times in a row
GC you doing it hard son. It had that hard thump to it. i loved the drums on it. you got it down pat. I loved the build up and everything. Banger
I’ll spend more time checking out the rest of these joints tomorrow.
Yo Dutch Good looking out for the tempo. I’ll drop a beat for it in a minute.
@Dutchmasters – thx for the feed. those shortened crashes were actually part of the sample i used (none of the other drums were).
I like your beat. nice funky take on the remix. but u need to lower that vocal sample, and raise the acapella, cos its getting drowned out. dmx’s verse also sounds a little out of sync. other than that its nice.
Here’s my mix finally:
http://www.zshare.net/audio/15506429f20cd7fc/
I’ve been checking out the mixes all week, and I agree about what was said about criticism, so I’m expecting some heat my way. Anyhow, as for others, I love your sample Phurcat. Nice 70’s sound perhaps off some show or movie. Tommylux you’re intro kinda sounds like the song In Too Deep, but the sample you switched into is fire. G.C. you’re rocksteady as always. Dj Profit, now that’s how you flip an original sample. Info your joint is on point. S.2ITA love the violins. Dutchmasters you got me stump this week. No idea what you sampled, but it’s tight work.
Oh forgot, Black SS you’re joint is fire too. I’m trying to figure out the sample tho. Also my fault Dutchmasters about the labeling.
Whats good people.Looks like a good number of entries.Cant wait to hear em.Just been busy with life and trying to get this remix done.Well here it is and I hope yall like it.I would appreciate it if you could leave comments(good or bad)Thanks.Oh yea,I finally got a myspace page up,so drop by fam.

ima give diz 1 a try. i might not make deadline since i just got home and aint getta chance to settle in. but ima definitely try to make deadline.
Hey my fault EP. Didn’t mean to overlook you. I too am relatively new to this as well. From reading the name of the song it looks like you use RJD2’s Like Your Def. I’ve heard some stuff from them and it was alright. The thing about your mix is that it would have been more original to have used the original sample from RJD2 and then remix it. Besides that it starts out strong and then the vocals run, a very common problem (mine included). Anyhow, keep doing you and you’re only get better. Kinectic, your joint is top 3 easy. What sample is that? It seems like it sounds so familiar…
Heres My Version to the track http://www.zshare.net/audio/155601920febfb8e/
.. if i win please contact me kingimi_dat_don@yahoo.com .. because i dont get much time online
Nice mix Kingimi. I just listen to your mix Doni Jo cuz I hate when you put your download as a zip file lol, but I see you use New Birth’s Honey Bee.
wassup y’all, things been pretty busy for me so I didn’t have much time to comment, but G.C. – you done did it again! Anyways, my track for this week is kinda like having ugly kids. You love ‘em all the same, but you still feel a little sorry for ‘em!
This week I just had a total mental block, so any ideas on how to lift this sucker would be appreciated.
http://www.zshare.net/audio/1556550881de412c/
Just so y’all know – my kids ain’t ugly! One
What up. Finally got a chance to listen to th remixes and heres the verdicts.
Nickelz-had high drama and if the vocals from the sample were in the hook, that would be a nice touch.
Goosebumps- Nice melody, just work on the sync a little
Isbjerg-using the orginal is okay, but you have to bring it.The beat was a little dry,but your second remix was much better
Doni jo-hot beat, but needs some change ups
Phurcat-Grimy track, maybe some slight variations and your in the house
EP- you had me all in, till the vocals ran.Nice track though
Tommylux-Nice track, but it seemed the drums went alittle crazy in the hook
DJ Profit-That remix can be right in the pocket with some minor change ups
Info-Feeling that remix
2.2ita-Rocking the horror vibe
Dutch-nice feel, just keep an eye out for the vocals in the sample drowning out the acapella.Like the verse change ups.
Black SS-With some variations, you’re on your way
Beatstreet-Some sync work and some change ups then you’ll be rolling
Kingimi-You had an easy listening vibThe only thing is your vocals ran away alittle
OneMic-Yours had a bebop feel to it.Maybe a chage up or two would take that a notch.
These comments are made to be constructive not destructive and with that I will say this is definitely not a good week for us and I almost feel ashamed. This is BIGGIE!!!!!!! I mean, come on fellas,we went harder at Skeelo than this.Kev’s right. We need to stop sugar coating and start helping each other, because,in the real world, they will CRUSH YOU if you went to them with some of this stuff and yall know it.This is for the love of music fellas.Lets step it up a notch
ONE LOVE!!!!!
I guess we can all feel the competition now and are really trying to outdo each other.. I did the first remix with Bill Conti, because I have wanted to play with that sample since I heard ‘Victory’ and I didnt do as good as I expected so I had to go back to the lab and do the 300 remix, which I felt more energy from – I believe that producers are faced with these situations in real life and are wrecked for a better remix, but you can’t win all the time… We have had some running vocals this week and I believe that it’s because of eager and the feeling of wanting this so much.. I can feel a dedication amongst many of my producer friends, and I am still proud to be a part of this site and competition, so I will do my best to lift myself and the rest to a higher level… You’re the next generation of hip hop producers and are doing very well – I imagine seeing some hot joints in the future with worldclass mc’s made by you guys…. You’re awesome, but with a few tiny prodution problems… Lets fix them and get to that next level… One love to yall – Isbjerg
thanks Beatstreet, the sample is from
“les uns et les autres” michel legrand (1981)
peace
thanks beatstreet and S.T.T.R.E.S.S., yeah I have a big problem with vocals running. Mainly due to my inability to keep up or switch up when the vocals do. I’ll try to fix it. If anybody is interested in giving me advice and/or feedback on a bunch of other biggie tracks I did, please tell me. thanks again
Yo whut up. here’s my joint.
I just saw Batman yesterday so i got back hyped up and made a chunky action packed joint. It’s got a build up but the real dookie is when Biggie starts spitting.
Hit me with some feedback.

Yo s.t.t.r.e.s.s. I’m loving your joint. Mad haunting feeling to it. Sugar smak drums too. fly geto boys drop too.
Info Crazy up jumps the boogie joint. Them drums is retarded. When the organ drops in it all comes together nicely. Ill kick in the door pinch.
s.2ita Kinda hectic with the beat. But the mysterious drama vibe still comes across well.
Yo Dutch check your myspace for the new joint.
Yo Kev whut up yo.

Whats up gang.Hope I did’nt step on anybodys toes, because thats not my intentions.I want Everybody to do well FOR REAL!!!! I dont see this as a competition anymore.I see it as an outlet to be heard and if possible, help out if i’m capable of doing so and recieving help in the process.
Kinetic-sorry I missed you in my comments earlier. That was a mad violin laced remix
Tokyo-serious Starski&Hutch type vibe, just a little adjustment to the vocals and viola!I would have loved to hear that part of sample, you had at the end flipped in during the remix, its hot!!!! And thanks for the remarks.I went through about 15-20 beats, before settling with that one ans still was’nt totally satisfied with it.
Fellas, lets keep moving up in the world like elevators
Peace!
After listening back to my version of the track i realized the tempo wasn’t on point to I mixed it perfectly so the vocals fit the beat fully. Please could you replace my entry with my new entry. Thanks.. Heres the link:
