Top 12 Most Anticipated Albums for 4th Quarter ‘08

I love doing lists and I feel like we don’t do enough of them here on the site.  My favorite lists are ones where we discuss our most anticipated album releases.  Since the summer is coming to a close and we’re about to hit the 4th quarter, I figured I’d drop my list of Most Anticipated Albums for 4th Quarter 2008.   These are all based on what is scheduled to be released before the end of the year, between September and December.  Let us know what’s on your list in the comments!

12.  Busta Rhymes: Blessed

Busta Rhymes: Blessed

Scheduled Release: September 2008

Busta-Bus’s follow up to 2006’s The Big Bang has been in hiatus for almost a year.  Originally scheduled for release in 2007, it went through names like Before Hell Freezes Over and Back on My B.S.  Now it is simply called Blessed.  We’ve already heard the singles “Don’t Touch Me” and “We Made It” and so far I haven’t been too impressed.  But there’s something about a Busta Rhymes record that makes me hope that this won’t be that bad.  Here’s the tentative tracklist…

  1. We Made It (prod by Cool & Dre & Mike Shinoda)
  2. Don’t Touch Me (prod by The Hitmen)
  3. Throw It Up (feat Lil Wayne & Ludacris) (prod by Cool & Dre)

Scheduled Release:  September 30, 2008

Sean Price and Rock AKA Heltah Skeltah are back! 10.  Termanology – Politics As Usual

Termanology - Politics As Usual

Scheduled Release: September 30, 2008

Termanology is set to drop his debut album and damn did he get some dope people to help him out!  Just look at the following producer credits… DJ Premier, Hi Tek, Alchemist, Pete Rock, Havoc, Buckwild, Nottz, Large Professor, and Easy Mo Bee.  I can’t remember the last time I saw a line up like that on one album! The first single, “How We Rock”, has already dropped and it’s just a small taste of the feast that Term’s about to throw down.  Here’s the tentative tracklist…

  1. Its Time (prod by Easy Mo Bee)

09.  Large Pro – Main Source

Large Professor - Main Source

Scheduled Release: September 30, 2008

The leader of Main Source is back with his third solo LP titled Main Source! Ok, I cheated a bit here.  Surprisingly this album just recently leaked online.  I had to get a sneak preview… and ohmygod it’s dope!  I will definitely be buying this one next month.  I compiled this list before I heard it, so I’m not letting my advance preview affect this album’s spot on my list (hint… it’s should probably be moved up).  Anyway, we’ll save the review for later.  I know ya’ll want this!  Here’s the tracklist…

  1. The Entrance
  2. Hot: Sizzling, Scorching, Torching, Blazing
  3. Maica Living (Feat. Killah Sha & Guardian Leep)

08.  Common – Invincible Summer

Common - Invincible Summer

Scheduled Release: September 22, 2008

You know we love some Common Sense on this site!  Just when we thought Common was giving up recording for acting, he announces that he’s got a new album this year.  Originally scheduled for release earlier this summer, we should have it in September, just before summer ends.  I’ve enjoyed every single Common album released (with the exception for Electric Circus) and his last too joints were flawless to me.  This time around Common decided to stray away from the Kanye formula and enlisted the help of The Neptunes.  The tracks “Universal Mind Control” and “Announcement” have already already leaked and so far the hype hasn’t been too great.  Let’s hope Common hasn’t lost his touch.  Here are some tracks that are rumored to be on the album…

  1. Announcement (prod by The Neptunes)
  2. Universal Mind Control (prod by The Neptunes)
  3. Runaway (feat Santogold)
  4. Make My Day (feat Cee-Lo)
  5. Punch Love
  6. Gladiator (prod by The Neptunes)
  7. What A World
  8. Changes
  9. Party Shit
  10. Dreaming

07.  Murs – Murs 4 President

Murs - Murs 4 President

Scheduled Release: September 30, 2008

I can’t seem to get enough Murs lately.  His latest joint with 9th Wonder, Sweet Lord, is in constant rotation as well as older Murs material.  This album has appearances by Snoop Dogg, Will.I.Am, and 9th Wonder of course.  The first single “Can It Be” has already hit the street and Murs is ready to take us by storm!  Here’s the tracklist…

  1. Intro
  2. I’m Innocent
  3. Lookin’ Fly [feat. Will.i.am]
  4. The Science
  5. Can It Be (Half a Million Dollars and 18 Months Later)
  6. Everything
  7. Road Is My Religion
  8. Sooo Comfortable
  9. Time Is Now [feat. Snoop Dogg]
  10. Think You Know Me
  11. Me and This Jawn
  12. Love and Appreciate II [feat. Tyler Woods]
  13. Apart of Me
  14. Break Up (The OJ Song)
  15. Breakthrough

06.  The Game – L.A.X.

The Game - L.A.X.

Scheduled Release: August 26, 2008

I know this album is set to be released just a week shy of 4th quarter, but I’m really looking forward to The Game’s new album. His previous two joints, although not mind blowing, were solid efforts.  From what we’ve heard so far (“Game’s Pain”, “Dope Boys”, “My Life”), this album may run along those same lines.  Some nice features and top notch producers should help the album do well.  Here’s the tracklisting…

  1. Intro (feat DMX)
  2. LAX Files (prod by J.R. Rotem)
  3. State of Emergency (feat Ice Cube) (prod by J.R. Rotem)

  10. House of Pain (prod by DJ Toomp)
  11. Gentleman’s Affair (feat Ne-Yo) (prod by J.R. Rotem)
  12. Let Us Live (feat Chrisette Michele) (prod by Scott Storch)
  13. Touchdown (feat Raheem Devaugh)
  14. Angel (feat Common) (prod by Kanye West)
  15. Never Can Say Goodbye
  16. Dope Boys (feat Travis Barker)
  17. Game’s Pain (feat Keyshia Cole)
  18. Letter To The King (feat Nas) (prod by Hi Tek)
  19. Outro (feat DMX)

05. Rapper Big Pooh – Rapper’s Delight

Rapper Big Pooh - Rapper’s Delight

Scheduled Release: 4th Quarter 2008

One half of the duo Little Brother, Big Pooh, is set to put out the follow up to his 2005 solo debut Sleepers. Little is known about this project, except that we have a name, an album cover and the video to the first single “With You”. 9th Wonder did that beat and we can only hope that he did a few more.  I’m sure we can expect to hear Khrysis on at least a few tracks as he dominated most of Sleepers.  Whatever is in store for this album, I don’t think Pooh can do any wrong.

04.  Dr. Dre – Detox

Dr. Dre - Detox

Scheduled Release: 4th Quarter 2008

How many of you all think Detox will be out this year?  Well Dre says he’s aiming for a November-December release.  Snoop Dogg had mentioned earlier this year that the album is complete, but Bishop Lamont stated that it’s only 50% done.  No details have leaked about the album, but rumors of guests include everyone from 50 Cent, The Game, Nas, Jay-Z, Lil Wayne, and Ice Cube.  I guess we’ll just have to see.

03. Q-Tip – The Renaissance

Q-Tip - The Renaissance

Scheduled Release: October 14, 2008

A Tribe Called Quest is probably one of my favorite hip hop groups ever.  So if a new Q-Tip album is coming out, you know it’s gonna be high on my list! It’s been nine years since Tip released his solo debut, 1999’s Amplified, and he has yet to release a proper studio follow-up. Kamaal the Abstract, his sophomore record scheduled for release in 2002, never came out, and Q squashed all rumors of a new ATCQ album.

Renaissance is scheduled to be a nine-track set blending live instrumentation, scratching and samples for a sound reminiscent of early A Tribe Called Quest.  The album will tentatively open with “Shaka,” a song featuring an excerpt of one of presidential candidate Barack Obama’s campaign speeches over a guitar-tinged beat. It still isn’t official that the track will make the cut, since the sound byte hasn’t been cleared yet.  Also featured on the set is the piano-based lead single, “Getting Up,” which is in the vein of Tribe’s “Award Tour,” the Raphael Saadiq-assisted “Fight/Love,” which tells the stories of a girl in a troubled relationship and a young man fighting in Iraq, and “Life Is Better,” featuring Norah Jones, where Q-Tip pays tribute to all his favorite rappers, including Biz Markie, LL Cool J, Leaders of The New School, Snoop Dogg, Eazy-E, Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, Brand Nubian and Pimp C.  The album will also feature a collaboration with R&B singer D’Angelo entitled “Believe” in addition to “ManWomanBoogie” with Amanda Diva.

02.  Foreign Exchange – Leave It All Behind

Foreign Exchange - Leave It All Behind

Scheduled Release:  4th Quarter 2008

You take one of the best emcees in the game right now, Phonte Coleman, and put him with one of the dopest producers out, Nicolay, and you have one hell of a combination — Foreign Exchange.  Their 2004 release, Connected, is already listed in my collection as a hip hop classic.  When I got word last year that they were working on a new joint, I almost lost it.  The duo has already announced that the album is done and should be ready for a fall release.  No further info has been released on the album, although someone has already put together a fake tracklist.  Figured I’d post it up here for fun.  Phonte has already said this was BS.  Wonder who comes up with the stuff?

  1. Back To You (Intro)
  2. Sweeter Than You (prod by Nicolay)
  3. House of Cards (prod by Nicolay)
  4. Leave It All Behind (prod by Nicolay & Krhysis)
  5. Another Day (prod by Nicolay)
  6. Keep It Moving (prod by Nicolay)
  7. All I Do (feat Darien Brockington, Median & Cesar Comanche) (prod by Nicolay & 9th Wonder)
  8. Still Connected (Skit)
  9. We Alright (Be Alright Part II) (feat Median) (prod by Nicolay)
  10. Nic’s Message (Skit)
  11. Lights (prod by Nicolay)
  12. New You (prod by Nicolay)
  13. Dreamer (feat Rapper Big Pooh & Darien Brockington) (prod by Nicolay)
  14. Tay’s Message (Skit) (prod by Nicolay)
  15. Brand New Day (prod by Nicolay)
  16. Beleive It (feat The-Dream) (prod by Nicolay)
  17. All That You Are (Nic’s New Groove Remix) (feat Median & Darien Brockington)
  18. I Need Her (feat John Legend) (prod by Nicolay)

01.  Jay-Z – The Blueprint 3

Jay-Z - The Blueprint 3

Scheduled Release: December 2, 2008

What more can I say? My favorite emcee in the game is dropping the much anticipated Blueprint 3. Who knows what we’ll get yet… at first it was rumored to be a full Timbaland production, now they say Kanye has the realms. Last I heard No ID is supposed to help out with production. Whoever ends up on it, you know it’s gonna be hot. “Jockin’ Jay-Z” has all the buzz lately. The only other confirmed track is the rumored “Victory”.  Will Hov repeat The Blueprint?  Or will it be a Kingdom Come?

Alright ya’ll… role call!  What albums you looking forward to?

Of course I’m waitin’ for Jay-Z. I’ll be checkin’ for that Heltah Skeltah. EVERYBODY knows “Detox” will not be coming out. I’m hoping for 9th’s album “Wonder Years”. Large Pro seems interesting. Busta’s projects are 1/4 great, 1/4 good, 2/4 boo. I am waiting for my fav “Crack rap man”….Da snowman on 9/2/08. There are some others…just can’t think.

2 Kevin August 14, 2008 at 10:27 pm

I didn’t list “Wonder Years” cuz I don’t think that will ever comes out… maybe Detox won’t either. Yeah, I agree about Busta… but The Big Bang was really good. Jeezy? Really?

3 Cryptvill August 14, 2008 at 10:31 pm

Damn, sept. 30 is gonna be THAT day.

4 20 Keys August 14, 2008 at 10:46 pm

Jeezy is that dude. His album would probably be my number 2 behind The Blueprint 3.

5 Kevin August 14, 2008 at 10:50 pm

Yeah, Sept 30 is gonna be crazy! OH I fogot to add the new Trav Williams… lol…. for real though!!

6 Thomas August 14, 2008 at 11:46 pm

Yes Jeezy! He’s one of my favorite “Crack rappers”…him and the Clipse. They sold a lot of drugs on wax, but I’m pulled to it. Some of those releases are gonna get pushed back on 9/30/08. Too much coming out on one day.

7 Carsten August 14, 2008 at 11:58 pm

Why did I know that Jay is on the number one spot? Can’t wait for Jay too. Nice that you included Game, you know I’m a stan. Almost all of my favorite Mc’s are havin releases this year (Jay, Nas, Game), I guess Kanye is releasing a DVD about his tour.. anyway, nice pickups!

8 J. Wonder August 15, 2008 at 12:05 am

Sept. 30th is crazy!!! I been waitin’ for Detox forever like everyone has, Dre will give us Detox just in time for Christmas!

9 jayski August 15, 2008 at 12:20 am

Jay-Z!!!! Blueprint 3 number one of course I’m with Thomas waitin’ on that Jeezy “The Recession” Kev if you haven’t heard Thug Motivation 101 you need to pick that up! Also Game “LAX” that Joe Budden “Padded Room” I hope Fabolous drops something this year one of my fav rappers very underrated. If Detox doesn’t come out this year it’s never out!! I’m a super Jadakiss stan hope he drops this year, Common is ill but not really feelin’ this Neptunes connection have to hear the album to decide rather to cop same with Busta even though Big Bang was highly slept on and last but not least The Clipse.

10 20 Keys August 15, 2008 at 12:52 am

“Jeezy the snowman / I make it wintertime / Heard the streets hungry / Well it’s dinnertime”

11 Mike August 15, 2008 at 12:55 am

#1 for me is MURS!! Most anticipated… as far as the present Murs is my fav emcee since I heard Murs 3:16!! Positive and banging all at once. Sleepers was that hit, Big Pooh is always dope, Jay-z Of course… I’m curious to hear the q-tip and common as they seem to have different sounds for the new albums. Hip hop is super saturated right now and has been boring me… we need some bangers!!! Peace ya’ll

12 Trapperjohnmd August 15, 2008 at 1:10 am

That Large Pro is official. It’s 97 all over again. Jeezy is wack! What about Cuban Linx 2 or Saigon?

13 [dojo] August 15, 2008 at 1:50 am

Leave It All Behind is my #1 anticipated album of not only the fall but also 2008. i haven’t been feenin’ for another album as much as this one.
also lookin’ forward to the Murs, Tip & Common joints.
and i remember back in Sept ‘07 when i saw 9th Wonder in chicago and he said Wonder Years was comin’ out in Jan ‘08…glad to know we share the whole ‘that ain’t comin’ out anytime soon’ mindframe…lol

14 Theo August 15, 2008 at 3:05 am

agree with number 1. Everybody is waiting for The BP3.
I’m not feeling “jockin Jay-Z” by the way.
Another album wich drops soon is Ice Cubes Raw Footage. Everbody should check that one out.

15 M Easy August 15, 2008 at 3:23 am

This got me amped. Hip hop is back!

16 SeventhSun August 15, 2008 at 3:43 am

Nice nice.

A friend of mine keeps going on and on about Bishop Lamont, but I see he’s not on the list?

Any thoughts on Mr. Bishop?

17 lesiki August 15, 2008 at 4:05 am

Blueprint 3 is of course my most anticipated. But that Foreign Exchange and Pooh’s album, Common, Q-Tip and Detox (though I doubt it will happen) are also right up there.

I just hope Common doesn’t go all electric circus on us. Last 2 albums were all-time hip-hop classics. But I read an interview where he was talking about “not always educating people with his music, also showing that he likes to have fun”. That doesn’t sound like good news to me, but let’s hope he totally surprises me and pulls it off.

I honestly did not feel that first single at all, heard it once and haven’t played it again.

And one more thing: am I the only one who does not feel Jockin’ Jay-Z at all? After American Gangster (understated how great that album was – goes in Hov’s top 5 in my opinion) where all the songs had a very clear subject and he pulled it off brilliantly, on beautiful soulful production as well, it’s a bit disappointing to hear him go back to basically saying nothing over a overly-commercial Kanye beat.

That said, I’m sure Blueprint 3 will be fire.

18 Carsten August 15, 2008 at 4:20 am

Thomas, absolutley right. When it comes to the Crack game, Jeezy is da shit. Ah and Kev I miss the releases of Wale, the cool kids and Kid cudi on that list!

19 Buda August 15, 2008 at 4:22 am

Wasn’t there supposed to be a new Reflection Eternal album soon?

I haven’t been able to sleep since I heard. Any news on a date for that?

Peace

PS Have to disagree on Electric Circus… it’s pretty different to the rest of Com’s catalogue but man that album bangs!
PPS Have to agree on all the LB/Foreign exchange/Pooh love… NC is reppin’ the real these days

20 Jason August 15, 2008 at 6:29 am

ahh Kev! was expecting that Leave It All Behind to take top spot
but i guess a Ye/Jay album is probably the only thing to top it!!

great list
besides those two (and Murs), my big big release im waiting on is The Streets – Everything Is Borrowed out sept 15

21 Thomas August 15, 2008 at 9:07 am

I’ve been waiting on Saigon to drop for over two years. He wasn’t on my list because he isn’t going to drop. I wish he just release the album to the internets so we can hear the music. He is dope.

22 Marcha August 15, 2008 at 9:21 am

damn i want that new foreign exchange so baaaad.

23 Carsten August 15, 2008 at 9:45 am

Yeah Thomas!! I already forgot Saigon! The singles “C’Mon Baby” & “Belive It” are hot! I remember him sayin he wants to drop it on the net for free when it doesn’t will be released through a Label. Ah and what about Papoose? Wasn’t he New Yorks Saver, since 2005? LOL

24 Kevin August 15, 2008 at 10:20 am

Yeah, a lot of those that you all list have potential. I don’t think Saigon will drop, nor Papoose. I haven’t heard news on Bishop Lamont, Wale, Cool Kis, aor Kud Cudi releases… are they all coming out with albums?

I also agree that Common’s first single and Jay’s first single are nothing major. But most street singles don’t usually light my fire anyway. I think it’s too early to tell based on one track what a whole album will sound like.

But yeah, the Large Pro leaked and it’s AMAZING. I heard Ice Cube also leaked, but haven’t heard it yet.

Sept 30 is gonna be that day…. the day I go broke! Think I’ll buy the Large Pro and Murs and…. damn, I gotta budget!

25 Tommylux August 15, 2008 at 12:03 pm

Wow, dope stuff coming up. Most looking forward to that Foreign Exchange, the first one is classic indeed. Curious about that heltah Skeltah too, I’m a big BCC fan. Large pro, murs, and Pooh bound to be dope too. And that producer list on termanalogy is CRAAAZY, but I’m kind of not anticipating too much, cos I’ve seen albums with similar producer lists end up being alright, but not as dope as you’d expect. let’s hope the producers didn’t just give him any leftover beats… As far as that Common is concerned, I think “Be” was classic, but “Finding Forever” could have been equally good, but maybe he rushed it a little bit. It seems to me that now is again maybe too soon to drop again..

26 nofrillz August 15, 2008 at 3:03 pm

i’d like to think that jay still has another blueprint in him, or even another blakc album, but im not holding my breath. foreign exchange has been top of my list for months now. i loved sleepers so the follow up is on my radar. and i acutually really like the gams 1st 2 so ill snap up LAX when it drops. judging by what ive heard so far, common may be set to let me down this go round. heltah skeltah is a must for any real head & as ATCQ are my all time favs bar none. q-tip will be a major one for me too. and i am also looking forward to the dj revolution album too

27 Trapperjohnmd August 15, 2008 at 3:12 pm

I’m suprised by people not liking that Jay Z joint. It’s so old school and i’m a fan of the old school, the Run DMC sample(Dumb Girls, check it) is raw. Bishop Lamont is dope, but he’s fucking with Dre and you know what that means!

28 J. Wonder August 15, 2008 at 5:31 pm

I remember @ rock the bells in 06 Souls of Mischief said they where in the studio makin’ an album!!! That is the album I need to hear…some new SOM!!!

And The Wonder Years, I remember it was suppose to come out in January…I even went to the store to get it and asked if they had the new 9th Wonder, the dude was like WHO? haha

29 Jay-Tee August 15, 2008 at 7:23 pm

“I’ve enjoyed every single Common album released (with the exception for Electric Circus)”

I was just wondering why you mentioned you didn’t like Electric Circus from Comm Sense?

30 Ross Burrell August 15, 2008 at 8:35 pm

Rumor has it, that Black Milk’s Tronic is droppin in October. With his impressive resume, including The Preface, which I think is the best album of the year thus far. Tronic would be my #1 pick of the 4th quarter.

31 Kevin August 15, 2008 at 8:48 pm

@ Jay-Tee – I don’t know… it was just too different for me. Didn’t sound like a Common album.

I haven’t heard about Black Milk’s album… that would have def made the list!

Ooooh, Souls of Mischief? That would be hot!

32 Jay-Tee August 15, 2008 at 8:53 pm

That’s cool kev, honestly it took me a couple listens and it really grew on me, i think it’s his most slept on…
Plus it gots mad dilla production…

33 Cenzo August 15, 2008 at 8:53 pm

yo kev. a couple of songs of the new game album leaked in clean versions. u gotta listen to “ya heard” feat. luda. sick beat man. sickest shit i’ve heard this year, no lie.

34 Kevin August 16, 2008 at 12:35 am

Yeah, I’ve seen a few of the tracks leaking lately. I’m gonna wait until I got the full album to hear them.

35 teqneeq August 16, 2008 at 2:05 am

i’m not gonna front im a big jeezy fan…..and im waiting for hov and tht large pro is a def….common of course lost intrest with detox….and of course the game nd busta….i like ”i got bass”

36 S.2 August 16, 2008 at 5:24 am

I’m interested to hear every album on this list. But mostly Murs. So many of his lines just hit the nail right on the head. But I’m tryin to make sure I don’t let my expectations get too high, cos if I do I might get let down even if its a really good album.

I noticed the tracklist doesn’t have Better than the Best or Dreadlocks. I wonder why they were cut? Maybe cos they were released ages ago?

But one other album I would have included is Rhymefest – El Che. Thats meant to be coming out this year isnt it?

37 Gastro August 16, 2008 at 9:13 am

My number one is OBFCL2 (why isn’t it on the list?!?!)and The Blueprint 3, no question about it.

38 Thomas August 16, 2008 at 9:21 am

Cuban Linx 2 is NEVER coming out. This is from a person who faithfully toted around that Purple Tape for almost a year…and I mean everywhere to put it in someones tape deck in ‘95-’96.

42 Trapperjohnmd August 16, 2008 at 11:32 am

Cuban Linx 2 will drop. It has to or Raekwon career is a wrap. I thing the Wu is the greatest of all time, but, the Rza has lost his damn mind. He doesn’t make the same music anymore, he’s like a modern day Hendrix, drugs included. I thought Dreadlocks was wack from Murs, glad it’s cut

43 Thomas August 16, 2008 at 11:57 am

Wu-Tang 4 Ever. Rae’s career was over once he dropped Immob…or however you spell it. He came back respectable with Lex Diamond Story, but he didn’t captialize off of the success of the O.G. Cuban Linx.

It seems once someone start F’in with Dr. Dre there career goes on hold. What ever happen to the Joell Ortiz album. That Brick joint was/is fire.

RZA is just moving in a different direction I guess?

48 Trapperjohnmd August 16, 2008 at 3:47 pm

Rae has one last to redeem himself, similar to 50 and Eminem at this point. It’s a one shot deal

49 JayPlus August 16, 2008 at 3:52 pm

“Something Else” by Robin Thicke is hitting stores on 9/30/08. I know its not hip-hop related, but I got to get my Grown Man on. LOL. 9/30/08 is gonna break me.

58 Kevin August 23, 2008 at 11:28 am

I’m right there with you Thomas. If this wasn’t a hip hop list, Robin Thicke would have made top 3 easily. The Evolution of Robin Thicke is probably one of the best R&B albums of this decade. Sept 30 is gonna be a killer!

59 nofrillz August 23, 2008 at 3:53 pm

new robin thicke. now your talking my language people!

In anticipation of Common’s album, here’s a mix I did recently: COMMON VS FELA KUTI.
