Project Funk Da World: Original Samples

by Thomas on September 6, 2008 · 22 comments

This 1994 debut from Bad Boy artist Craig Mack was the second project released by Bad Boy Records.  The first being the Notorious B.I.G.’s Ready To Die, Project: Funk Da World was highly overshadowed by the success of Biggie’s debut.

Flava in ya Ear didn’t have a sample in it?? That’s surprising! Yeah Mack had his own style but once B.I.G. blew up it was a wrap for Mack! I remember they had the whole (B.I.G. MACK) campaign going on but I thought Mack dropped first then B.I.G.?

“Flavor in Ya Ear” may have a sample, but we couldn’t find it. Mack’s project was released first. Our mistake.

just a small correction, now I may be wrong but Craig Mack was bad Boy’s FIRST release not second. And I know I’m not wrong about this one, You Gots to Chill by EPMD came from Strictly Business not Unfinished Business. But You got some good mixes though. I will be checking you out more and telling my guys to check u out. Hailing from Las Vegas by way of Chicago. One

Thanks Q. You’re right about “You Gots To Chill”. Typo on my part. However, Funk Da World was Bad Boy’s SECOND album release, by one week. Biggie’s Ready To Die was released on Sept 13, 1994, followed by Craig Mack’ Funk Da World on Sept 20, 1994.

hi first i really enjoy this website and i got a lot of respect for your work!!!but i think that you miss a sample on funk da world !i mean on flavor of da year it seems like their is a sample from a prince song called the greatest romance ever sold!!!!!! am i wrong????

11 Thomas January 6, 2009 at 7:09 pm

Este

We couldn’t find a listing for “Flavor in Ya Ear”. I know Kev is a big Prince fan so I know he’ll check it out once he sees this.

Sometimes we miss stuff….we don’t mind if you point it out or share the missing songs for inclusion in the set.

We don’t know everything. So…up the song and let me take a listen….where in the Prince song is the sample from? Time?

Thanks for the support.

12 Kevin January 6, 2009 at 11:12 pm

Este, that’s impossible cuz that Prince song came out in 1999. Huge Prince fan here… he’s making a comeback with 3 new albums this year!

Flava in ya ear is sample based. Easy Mo Bee said himself that its a guitar with reverb and that the drums are sampled drums as well where he chopped up the snare and kick and hight hat. The sound effect some people say comes from the start of the first terminator movie when arnold lands. The prominent guitar sample is probably lou donaldson “whos making love”

14 andre from baltimore January 26, 2009 at 3:12 am

well….. ive just remade alittle bit of the beat and pfuma seems to be right about “whos making love”.

this is what i came up with:
http://www.zshare.net/audio/546766645b381b05/

you tell me if it’s a go

15 Thomas January 26, 2009 at 9:53 pm

Andre…I don’t think I can’t argue with you. I would say its the sample.

But they also used that Lou Donaldson “Who’s Making Love” for “One More Chance” (Hip-Hop Mix). First 5 seconds of the sample.

16 Thomas January 26, 2009 at 9:55 pm

Duh on my part…Kev and Ivan…included that in their “Ready to Die” set

17 Pfuma Makwembere April 4, 2009 at 7:45 pm

Andre from Baltimore, you are certainly great

18 Thomas June 11, 2009 at 10:21 pm

Questlove said the the Lou Donaldson “Who’s Making Love” isn’t the sample for “Flavor In Ya Ear” on Twitter tonight. He said easy Mo Bee told him the sample. The search con’ts

I believe that the scratch “no more music for the suckers” at the end of “funk wit da style” is taken from the tv show “Rap attack” (21 february 1987). You can find it on the compilation “down the dial” by will C. (2008).

“Flava In Ya Ear” did have a sample… don’t know the name of it, but someone actually played the vinyl for me about 10 years ago. It’s a sample because Prince also used it for “The Greatest Romance” remix with Eve.

I heard its a hairdryer sound used when the chrous comes in??
