Kanye West: Love Lockdown

by Kevin on September 10, 2008 · 33 comments

Here it is, the studio release of Kanye West’s new single “Love Lockdown”.  This is off of Kanye’s new album 808’s & Heartbreak, due in stores December 16th.  The album is rumored to be heavy on the auto-tune with Kanye singing instead of rapping.  I know some of you are feeling the new song.  I haven’t quite made up my mind yet.

Edit: the download file has been deleted.  To avoid Kanye’s label from coming after me, we’ll just stream it below.

I like the beat & the lyrics seem heartfelt and personal but Kanye can’t sing… at all. Wayne can’t sing either but somehow it works for him. Kanye should either develop his own vocal styling or stick to rapping.

You know I’m thinkin’ he’s a great artist but this one? I don’t know…

3 Carsten September 10, 2008 at 5:07 pm

ah and btw it seems like this version isn’t really mixed he really sounds soo wack at some parts, he just can’t release it like that. I feel the beat though

4 One Mic September 10, 2008 at 5:47 pm

I love me some Kanye, but that’s some weak shit!

5 Sean Deez September 10, 2008 at 6:39 pm

this song is fucking terrible

6 smallpro September 10, 2008 at 8:08 pm

no, no. no.

7 J.Brookinz September 10, 2008 at 8:47 pm

long time fan but
“this song is fucking terrible”<<<Ditto

but

he can do no wrong,he sell a bunch of records, and I’ll be labeled a hater.

the live version > the studio version.

look, i’m a big Kanye fan. i think his 3 albums are incredible. that’s just me. if you think different then that’s your opinion. you can’t change my opinion. tough shit.

however, i’m thinking this has to be a demo version. the live version to me sounded good. this “studio” version sounds like something an amateur would record with a cheap hundred dollar microphone.

i’m waiting for a better version. and that’s all i gotta say.

9 Trapperjohnmd September 10, 2008 at 9:09 pm

This shit is horrible! I thought Kanye was suppose to be innovative not a biter(Old School!)

10 Norman Beats September 10, 2008 at 10:19 pm

Yah, it can’t possibly be the final version. He pauses to take a breath in parts and his vocals are just not good. I think the song is good, though. He should make an r&b compilation or something. But I know his ego won’t let him. Hope the album sounds better than this.

This is what happens when your head gets too big and everybody is constantly riding your jock. but he’s rich and can do what he wants so good for him. but i agree wit everybody else… straight booty.

12 krome. September 11, 2008 at 2:03 am

he leaked the unmastered version, hence the quality of the recording.

i’m warning you now, this is a GENERAL vent, so don’t anybody catch feelings like I’m talking directly to them on here. i’ve heard endless discussion about this song today from 4:00 onwards. on the bus, on the train, walking on the street, in line at Jamba Juice, and ofcourse, on every other blog in existence.

i’m not normally one to stick up for him or his tight pants, and am FAR from a Kanye Stan, but come on, judge this track for what it is.

it’s a POP track.

yeah, he can’t sing, but can Britney? Rihanna? Cassie? T-Pain? it’s catchy & extremely club friendly, so you already know the girls are gonna love it as much as they did Flashing Lights, and it’ll get extra heavy rotations in the clubs and on the radio. why? cause it’s a POP track.

i’m not one for pop music, so this song isn’t my cup of tea, but that doesn’t change my opinion about him. since when does one track define an artist? that’s just like how Fox News trashed Nas acting like “Shoot Em Up” was his only track ever. let the mastered track drop and have a new mos def or 3 stacks freestyle find it’s way on top of it. you know that’ll change peoples’ stances.

he’s an artist, is he not? he’s allowed to experiment. if he wants to do the pop thing, then simply pass on the tracks/album, and keep it moving. if he’s not trying to cater to his hip hop fans, don’t take it personal and be over-dramatic, cause it’s not even that serious. you got 2 (or 3 to some) solid hip hop albums of his to quench your thirst on. look forward to that hov album he’s producing. i mean, from what i saw, people were diggin Jockin’ Jay-Z, right?

13 nofrillz September 11, 2008 at 3:16 am

when stronger 1st leaked more than a few peeps were not happy with the change in kanyes sound. then when the album came out people were happy with it. i like the song & i too do not like the singing. but this is in no way a mastered version. i’ll wait to hear the song in context with the rest of the album. judging by the title ‘808 & heartbreaks’. it looks like he may have left the school concept behind. i’ll wait till december to judge. h’es 3 out of 3 so far right?

14 QueRico September 11, 2008 at 3:41 am

i agree with what krome said. it’s a pop song. if he does that pop thing then that’s good for him. he’s an “artist”.

i like all types of music. my iPod is pretty crazy. that being said…. i really enjoy GOOD, catcy pop music. i like “some” pop music that are out now-a-days like Metro Station, Katy Perry, Madonna’s new album, Nelly Furtado, Justin Timberlake, and some more that i’m forgetting.

i would be interested in the change of direction for Kanye. but let’s be real……. this is something a kid who is just starting out making songs/beats would do. the quality in the vocals sound crappy. i understand the auto-tune concept & i still don’t care if this is part of his experimentation. the overall song is not properly mixed.

I HOPE THIS IS JUST SOME SICK JOKE FROM ‘YE. *Still waiting for the official version*.

15 SoulClap September 11, 2008 at 4:32 am

Man, I hope Kanye aint on some T-Pain shit for his album. i’ve seen the performanca on the VMA’s and I really liked the stuff with the drums and everything, but I’m very sceptical concerning the new album… But nobody was buying the last kanye album because of the lyrics anyway… so it doesn’t really matter if he raps or sings

16 Jason September 11, 2008 at 5:36 am

Yeah as much of a Ye stan as i am, i still dunno about this song. im waiting for proper proper release before final judgement.
let’s just hope there isnt many more of these types of songs on 808s & Heartbreak.
but have you guys heard ‘heartless’?? now that song sounds mean!!!

i think one of the points that hasnt been mentioned about this song and ‘new kanye’ and with this being the first single:
a conventional kanye song would never have caused this much discussion! and thats all u can really want from a lead single right??

17 S.2 September 11, 2008 at 6:56 am

I agree I don’t like the mix. I think I prefer the older Kanye, n I’m not completely sure if I like this song. But its real catchy (as I think was intended). I’ve only heard it twice n its stuck in my head.

18 Kevin September 11, 2008 at 8:30 am

Just for the record, this mp3 came straight from Kanye’s blog. Yeah it may not be the final, final mix, but I’m sure it’s not gonna hold a candle to the live version (for those that like the track). Remember last year when Lil Wayne debuted “Gossip” live (I think it was at the VMAs too)? The studio version sucked ass compared to the live as well. Just a comparison. I wouldn’t be surprised if this wasn’t too far from the final mix.

19 S.2 September 11, 2008 at 8:42 am

just had another thought. If Kanye were to continue to do the same thing, we would probably get bored of him. He’s making us miss the College Dropout / Late Registration sound. Hopefully if he ever goes back to that sound it will make it that much better, cos we had to wait.

20 Kevin September 11, 2008 at 8:51 am

Looks like the file has been deleted. I’ll stream it later.

21 Cenzo September 11, 2008 at 11:11 am

AHHH! i told ya he gon fuck with that vocoder. damn…im not really feelin the song. there’s something missing. A-Trak has to remix this. it is made for a crazy a-trak remix with some cool electro drums and stuff. (im a hip hop head, dont get me wrong) :)

22 yashga September 11, 2008 at 11:35 am

this can’t be the original version!! it sounds like some retard trying to sound like kanye! This is not the original version!

23 JB September 11, 2008 at 12:04 pm

This sounds like a recording taken directly from the board at the VMA’s. I’m still on the fence with this as well. Common sense is telling me to hate it, but something is keeping me interested. Weird…

24 Mike September 11, 2008 at 4:26 pm

This is kind of to what Krome said… I don’t think anybody is hating on Kanye here, we’re just hating on the song. Kanye is already pop, he’s one of the biggest artist out now. I was at his tour this summer and believe me he is the definition of pop even before this song. To me just because something is pop music that doesn’t give it a pass. I also think Britney, Rihanna, T-Pain and Cassie are trash and would never buy their sh*t but everyone has their own taste. This joint will get heavy rotation because Ye is the big artist right now. Whether music is good has nothing to do with radio or tv (mtv is the devil as well as all these radio stations). Anyway good intelligent post my man. I have enough GOOD music from Kanye that I’m happy to have if he never made another song period. Hopefully that Jay-Z album will be classic!!!

25 Thomas September 12, 2008 at 9:36 am

I don’t like the song, probably not the first look I would want from Ye; but whatever. Ye hasn’t let me down as far as putting out a good product….so even though I don’t like the song (right now) I’m still copping his album when it drops.

26 K September 12, 2008 at 11:20 am

I would love to get my hands on a vocoder then I could sing too!!!

27 Thomas September 12, 2008 at 1:24 pm

http://www.xxlmag.com/online/?p=24427 Billy X Sunday has a different opinion of this Ye joint.

28 Cenzo September 13, 2008 at 7:35 am

also the CDQ version has leaked. in case you didnt know!

i remixed this wack song. give it a listen…

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3EbdcYsOYCk

29 Kevin September 13, 2008 at 8:48 am

Apparently there’s no difference between the CDQ mastered version and this one, which is why I didn’t post it. Nice idea for a remix, but the song still sucks.

30 Thomas September 13, 2008 at 9:13 am

Harsh words Kev….LOL

31 Cenzo September 13, 2008 at 11:23 pm

yep. i gotcha kev. i know it sucks. kanye is tryin to do something new but he’s messin up. the vocoder effect is boring, cause everybody is using it, and i’ve read that he’ll use it for almost the whole album…damn!!!

(question: how can i participate on a remix competition of your site? ima try to bring some fresh air into this thang…no dance shit like my kanye gay remix…im a hip hop addicted boy. flensburg & hamburg stand up…soulclap knows what im talin about. imm tipsy, but izs saturday so its okay i guess. have a nice week,..and kev, please answer my ques)

32 Kevin September 13, 2008 at 11:42 pm

Remix contest is over. We’ll have some new contests coming up, but won’t be doing another weekly contest for a while.
