This is probably my favorite album cover of all time. Reminds me of the early Ohio Players album covers.
Yo kev unofficial Pete Rock day? How about a Pete Rock week. Any one who has any devotion to hip hop knows Pete Rock is more than an icon in our culture
Yeah, we’ll prob have to hook that up.
Word Kev. I’ll be on lookout. Peace
Dope shit once again Kev, I’m finding it hard to keep up with these. I try to rename them all with the original album names and artwork but it takes ages.
Thanks Scott…. you don’t like our artwork?
all good! the champs strike once again! one question though..where is the mc eihtg jaunt “one life to live”? that was my jammy…can you post that one also?
i meant mc eiht*
oh my god!!! thank you!
From now on we are going to focus just on the samples and not the scratched (hip hop) vocals.
The samples for this set were hard to come by. I couldn’t find a listing for the MC Eiht joint, that’s why it isn’t included.
Pete Rock used so many different sounds, samples, vocals and what not throughout this album it was hard trying to find listings for all of them.
For example, “Tru Master” has at least 4-5 more vocal samples, I couldn’t ID them all. “Half Man Half Amazin’” has at least 3 more as well. Not to forget about the interlude samples. This set’s total could be easily be 15-25 more samples.
We’ve had this for so long…just wanted to get it out there for the fam. The album is a master piece as far as production goes. Pete Rock to me had three classic releases (production wise) in a row. “Mecca…”, “Main…” and this one.
Nothing wrong with your artwork Kevin, I’m just real stickler for those old vinyl covers. Any chance of a link to my blog ? http://hiphopandbreakz.blogspot.com/
Thanks again. I have a question about sampling that you may know the answer to. What happens if a producer samples a song that originally sampled another song? Does the artist have to go down the line and pay for the original sample?
Thomas thanks for lookin out I appreciate it very much. I’m not a digger but it’s got to be hard work. thanks to you I now know billie jean was sampled in my favorite PR joint “take your time”
Vincent,
Not sure about how that works. “Truly Yours ‘98″ is obviously a cover of the Kool G. Rap and DJ Polo song of the same name. We included it because its a cover, but I would assume the original artist would have to be paid because the cover song comes from the samples…in this case Timmy Thomas and Kool and the Gang.
Worth talking it over with one of my best friends….Google. lol
Yo Thomas ( a.k.a. The super sample tank ) BONG BONG
This is the chunkyness right here. Peace to Goon as well for his contribution to this. This was a great album. pete Rock is a crazy scientist with the beats and this album really showed hoe he could update and still keep it ill. Great set. Plus yall wilded out with the “all souled out” set too.
Peace
Thanks Tokyo. We have plenty more ready to go between Kev/me and Alex (Goon) in the next couple of days/weeks.
man this is insane. it’s so nice to hear a sample set where the original samples themselves stand alone as songs! i was vibing to this on the bus this morning…
i’m putting myself out there saying i’m not familiar with all of this particular album (why not, i know–i knew all his stuff prior to this “era”)…but i do know that “Show us a feeling” is actually at the very beginning of “Half man Half Amazing” (‘cos i know that song like the back of my hand lol)…can’t say whether or not it’s used in “The Game”, but i do know it’s the beginning, with the “right about now it’s time to get down” as the vocal sample on top….
j.
Fixed the mix up on the Roy Ayers song. I’ve been slippin lately…not sure how I missed that one.
Yo Kev came across some hot vids on you tube of PR dissecting some of his biggest joints. Just go to you tube and put in guitar center sesssions and you will find them. Just wanted to share this with you and those who frequent your site.
