At the end of the day the new Hip Hop generation gets to pick who is who in the game. My lil cousins have no memories of the classics....and this hiphop music, which makes a noticable change every 5 years isn't going to survive with some of these "rules". This isn't like soul music where a person either can or cant sing...The music is progressive...and if you don't agree that hiphop music is progressive..you have to agree that it refuses to sit still. Let Wayne be enjoyed by the folks that enjoy Wayne. There is room for absolutely everyone in the game....from Yin Yang Twinz to Nas..there is room for all. I honestly don't understand why cats act like they only have room for 5 rappers in there collection. When I say that I love HIPHOP...I really mean it. ALL FORMS. I litterally have Project Pat, MF Doom, Nas, UGK, Gucci Mane, and Arrested Development in my changer right now....i guess thats just me though. I have to remind myself that its differnt strokes for different folks

lil wayne is above average, at best, and quotables are NOT the end-all-be-all for determining skill. fuck a quotable, does he have an album on which his performance is superior to rakim's on paid in full, ice cube's on death certificate, shit, jay-z's on volume 2: hard knock life? NO. when he's focused i give him props, but those moments are few and far between. when he drops an album that is equal to his popularity...no, scratch that (impossible)...when he drops an album that is worth my attention for the duration, ill give him props, but since he'd rather be in groups with t-pain...

"C’mon he got more quotables than 95% of m.c.s in the game today or yesterday"

If that statement is true he is the best rapper ever. Not buying that statement. Wayne has spit some ish now...I will admit that, love his passion, love the work ethic, love that he wants to be the best; but I can name a few rappers he isn't better than. He has more commercial success than them, but lyrically he ain't f'in with them: Joell Ortiz, Saigon, Joe Budden...just to name a few.

What up snitches I'm back after a lil vacation I logged on and what do I see? A lil wayne discussion. Yo, anybody that hates on Wayne is exactly that a hater. He's not lyrical? C'mon he got more quotables than 95% of m.c.s in the game today or yesterday. The only reason I listen to Weezy is to hear what and how hes going to say the next catch phrase.

"You ain't gotta tell me I can already smell it
You pussy niggas is eatin peanut butter and Jealous".

And overexposure? When did that become a bad thing? So you up and coming producers are going to turn down an opportunity to have Wayne spit on your shit because you DON'T want to be heard on every hip hop radio stations across the globe? Oh thats right your in it for the Fame not the Change. I call Bullshit.

Name one MC that you can listen to everyone of their songs all the way through. Your lying to yourself or a "insert rapper / M.C.'s name here" dick rider and theres no telling you nothing anyway. Again, I can't pigeon hole myself into one type of Hip Hop or rap style, I enjoy it all. I can tell you I don't understand the appeal of Little Brother but I don't hate on those that do get it and do enjoy it. Thats your opinion and you should be able to have one. But if you don't like Wayne or the Game (seems like they get the most backlash on every site but they are always the most popular) then thats on you.

His VMA performance was sick, but I'm sure he would do a completely different set for a crowd of hip hop heads.

Damn it feels good to be back. What up erryone?

this has been a great discussion thus far. It's kind of refreshing to see people express their opinions on the genre of music we love. I cant front Kev lollipop got stuck in my head too (ha,ha)

Of course, I gotta put in my 5 cents.. that's right, my opinion counts more than everbody's... LOL.

Let's not get it twisted... the reason why I originally put a ban on Lil Wayne on this site is because he's overexposed. I never said Lil Wayne was not hip hop; although I do think that anyone who uses autotune should be banned from hip hop. I actually used to dig Weezy (and I know a lot of you all did too). I agree with Thomas... Wayne's got amazing work ethic. and even though he may not have much to say, his voice is an instrument. Face it, he sounds good on a track. When "Lollipop" came out, I couldn't get that song out of my head.

At any rate, Lil Wayne may not be the hip hop that we necessarily like here on the site, but it doesn't mean that he is not hip hop.

Aiight, I will concede that Wayne is holding down the genre right now and he's grindin hard but I'm a fan of lyricists and I consider him average at best. I did BUY Carter III but it wasn't the most cohesive lp i've heard it seemed to be all over the place maybe that's what people like about him. Trust me I've tied to be open minded when it comes to this cat but he hasn't shown me the true measure of dopeness yet. Now let me say i'm 44 and I beleive I can say I have some hip hop knowledge. I truly beleive the excessive hype is going to be his downfall. I'll give you that he did his thing at VMA's but in a spot of real heads like us if doesn't have someone we consider dope onstage with him we ain't feelin him BTW the collabos on his recent disc he got overwhelmed by the guests IMO. That's the beauty of freedom of choice though the same cats who love Wayne probably won't ride with a Nas, Murs, etc. and vice versa. So on the strength of wayne not being "real hip hop" maybe I am off a bit but in the end he doesn't compare to people I ride with. Kev you and your site contirbutors keep up the tireless effort to give us the realness and a place where we can agree to disagree without being disagreeable

Thomas...I agree with you so much. A problem with a lot of folks these days is that as soon as its considered "popular" it isn't real hip hop. Wayne isn't an emcee??!!! Did you see what he did at the VMAs!!!??? Did you see how he gave a flawless performance and CONTROLED THE CROWD....sounds like an emcee to me...and I'm not a Lil Wayne fan at all. Yeah he has a few songs I like, but I cant call myself a fan.....yet. I can't wait to see what some of the folks on the net say about me when I'm sitting front row at the Grammy's, and producing for all of the rappers that folks don't consider "real hiphop"...they are gonna hate my guts. Cats cant just say."I'm not feeling him" they have to go as far as possible saying he aint an emcee..he aint real hip hop...Lil Wayne has absolutely nothing to do with the operation of the machine that puts him on every radio station and all over magazines and television....he simply raps his songs and goes home....dont take it out on the artist...he doesnt even own his own music....

but at the end of the day...this is kevinnottingham.com...and kev gets to report on whatever he wants to. Don't like it...take your ass to hiphopdx..LOL

Like it or not Wayne is hip-hop. I think he has the ability to be a great emcee. There are times when his rhymes have depth ("Trouble"), some imagination ("Dr. Carter"), and substance to them ("I Feel Like Flying").

I get tired of hearing him myself, but I can't front on his worth ethic. He has put out a lot of music (good and bad; depending what side of the fence your on) over the last three years to satisfy his fans. I'm under the impression if he would focus his energy into crafting a good album and cut down on the features/mixtapes he would come up with something amazing. To me Carter 2 is his best work. He was extremely focused on that joint.

I don't think we can discount him as "not hip-hop" because we don't like him. That's what makes this music so great...there is something for everyone.

86/87 is when I really started taking notice of Hip -Hop so I came up with some great music. I feel lucky because I experienced Rakim, BDP, G. Rap, BDK, Doug E Fresh, Slick Rick, Tribe, De La, Dre, Cube, NWA, Eazy, Brand Nubian, Jungle Brothers, etc. I grew up on that boom bap....that knock.

However, the way I feel about my "era" of music there is a 10, 11, 12 year old that thinks Wayne and whomever else is "hip-hop".

The best thing about Kev's site is there is a balance between the content on the site. This isn't a site where Wayne, Jeezy, Piles, Rick Ross, etc is going to get much blog space. They will get a mention here and there, but site (in my opinion) is geared towards the little guy. A place were unsigned artist, underappreciated artist, underrated artist, unknown producers, emcees can come and get their material out to thousands of people on a daily basis.

Since I've been coming to this site I have been exposed to some artist that I knew nothing about and/or didn't care to listen to beyond a cut here and there. But, being exposed to them now...I'm buying up their music.

Now of course as Kev has stated before Jay always will get play here. LOL.

Off topic again. I'm downloading the mixtape now...will listen in the morning.

A place were unsigned artist, underappreciated artist, underrated artist, unknown producers, emcees can come and get their material out to thousands of people on a daily basis.

Since I’ve been coming to this site I have been exposed to some artist that I knew nothing about and/or didn’t care to listen to beyond a cut here and there. But, being exposed to them now…I’m buying up their music.

Now of course as Kev has stated before Jay always will get play here. LOL.

Off topic again. I’m downloading the mixtape now…will listen in the morning.

Kev stick to your guns on the ban. Mo matter how far hip hop has evolved this cat is not real hip hop. But if it's gonna get you more hits then u gotta go with what's best for your site.

No, MIDI's just hosting the mixtape and has a few of his cuts on there. It's all instrumentals.
