Not only is the state of hip hop in trouble these days, it seems that the genre of R&B/Soul is taking a turn for the worse as well.  Next to hip hop, I am a huge fan of soul music (in case you couldn’t tell by our sample collections).  In particular, a flavor of soul that I really dig is Neo-Soul; popularized by artists such as Erykah Badu, Jill Scott, D’Angelo, and Musiq Soulchild.

Well, it seems that Musiq has now sold out to the masses.  While taking in my daily dose of VH1 Soul, I was introduced to the above music video.  My stomach did flips!  Is this a joke?!?!  Sorry, i just had to share.  Other major WTF moments today include Ed McMahon portraying a rapper in a video advertisement about bad credit, which is a blatant slap in hip hop’s face and Katie Couric‘s interview with Sarah Palin, where Mayor Governor Palin proved that she defintely has no place being in the Vice Presidential race.  Yet the polls between Obama and McCain are dead even right now.  WTF?!?!?

Somebody wake me up from this terrible nightmare!!!

    Yo this video been out for a minute it was on access granted on BET. I think this song is tight I don’t look at it as sellin’ out just tryin’ something different like Kanye is tryin’ to do. I’m pretty sure he’ll still have all those “Neo-Soul” songs on his album.

    WHAT THE F%&K. this dudes second album is one of my all time favs. but now that i think about it, i had a feeling that something like this couldve been on the cards due to the state of his second album. it was like he was almost trying to play both sides of the coin.

    but to got this far over to the other side is just plain disgraceful. musiq, i will always play your 1st 3 superb albums, but i am a fan no more

    as terrible as this track sounds (this is the first time ive listened to it since i listened to the first 10seconds of it mths ago and immediately deleted it)

    other tracks like the one featuring MJB and his hook for ice cube havent been too bad
    hopefully its just this one track on the album!!!

    Musiq seems to have a lot of creative control. I’m pretty sure this is something he wanted to do…and something he felt comfortable..I know its not what your use to from musiq…but hey….wheres the fun in being predictable

    1st off, that’s some ignorant shit – by writing this BS about the track, you dissed more than just the song – by tearing it up like that, you basically just dissed the whole man and his musical expression!…
    I gotta admit – At first I was like “What the F is he doing?”, but then again…if we really support(ed) the artist, like we said we did, we should just let him be. So what, he got one VERY “radio-commerce-oriented-fucked-up” song…lol…I don’t like the song neither, but I’m just like “Fuck the song, but let me hear what else he’s got on his upcoming album, bc I know he usually brings out dope music!”. Oh, and you should check out what he said about making the track and WHY he made a record like THIS…the man ain’t dumb – he knows what he’s doing and what ppl “normally” expect from him!!! I think you went to far “downing” the man like that – just like you did couple of weeks ago talking about “We never really supported Lil’ Wayne here” – that is a BIG “W T F”…one of the most ignorant statements I’ve read on blogsites. So I guess you had to mention that bc you had to have a some sort of (good) reason to NOT post the Lil’ Wayne Remix bc YOU don’t like Lil’ Wayne,huh?! Same shit, I don’t like what Lil’Wayne is doing with his Vocoder shit right now neither, but why always fucking diss and down somebody like you did?!!!!     WOW, I totally wasn’t expecting that, HANAU. Where do I begin? I gotta read back to what I said, cuz I don’t remember tearing Musiq up like that. Ok, I said he sold out. What would you call it? I definitely would not call it musical expression. If this is the type of music he truly wants to make, then good for him. But who would willingly WANT to make this type of music. I do support Musiq…. as long as he’s doing the type of music that I like. Maybe he does have a reason for putting out this trash… usually that’s called selling out.

    The thing is, Musiq has a following. He’s very popular in his genre of music. Maybe he’s not selling the amount of records that he would like to sell. Again, that is selling out.

    About your Lil Wayne comment, I don’t know what remix you are talking about. Did you send me some music and now you’re sore at me cuz I didn’t post it? I’ve made my case against Lil Wayne, so I won’t waste my breath on that one again.

    Ok, now onto the part of your comment that I really want to talk about…. my “small ass horizon”. If you are a regular reader of the site, you would know that we definitely reach beyond the horizon with the music we support. What other site do you know gives new artists their outlet to be heard the way we do? Yeah, we are a lot less commercial than some others, but commercial hip hop gets their fair amount of publicity. I don’t feel we need to support it here.

    Again, I think this goes back to the probability that you sent me some music and I didn’t post it. Especially with your comment that I “post soooooo much Bullshit ass Remixes”. If that’s the case, I’m sorry about that. Do you realize how much music I get sent to me everyday? I don’t even get the chance to listen to most of it.

    I’d really like to know what remixes I posted that you think are bullshit though. And I’d REALLY like to know about “these last couple of months ain’t been the same anymore – TOO MUCH “IGNANT” BULLSHIT”. I don’t think the content of this site has changed too drastically in the last couple of months. Of course, I post what I think the people want to read… what fun would it be to not have any readers?     Musiq lost, he DID sell-out, and even if this was one of the songs he’s been wanting to do his entire career (which its not) this is still a BAD, BAD song, and a corny video, and whoever said “Hey Musiq how bout you get a faux hawk cuz yea grown men rockin that is cool” should be fired.

    AND about the Ed McMahon commercial, thats not a slap in Hip-Hop’s face, he looks dumb with a velour leopard skin get up with a oversized tee and whatnot, we don’t even wear big ass shirts no more and I don’t remember nobody ever wearin no shit like what he’s rockin, so yea he’s not offending me lol

    my man you are way off base and your comments are extremely misguided. I didn’t get that Kev (from reading what he wrote) was condemning the man, but this wack ass song and any reason he made this song. I think you read more into Kev’s words than what was presented.

    I can go with experimenting with new styles, different concepts, but this song/video is so much different from his previous work. This is the guy who wrote/sang “Love”, “Buddy”, “Don’t Change”, etc. This man has never had a video like this ( I can’t front on them fatty fatty’s in the video tho). This seems like an attempt from him and/or record label to increase sales. This man hasn’t had less than 450,000 records sold in his career (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Musiq_Soulchild#Discography), so why go away from the formula? Why have this type of record as the single/video. This is not a good representation of the good body of work that he has. This song (if needed) should be an album cut not the first joint off of your new album.

    I do agree with one point you made…fuck the song….I’m waiting to judge him on the album; because he has always put out a good product. I for one don’t understand why artist don’t do things to satisfy their core base first then try to get new listeners/fans in. This video/song is turning away some of his hardcore fans. I believe that to be true because look at the reaction that this song/video is receiving.

    Now onto some of the other crazy stuff you said: “We never really supported Lil’ Wayne here”. Please post the comment where that above statement comes from.

    I can remember when I semi took up for Wayne during the discussion about him being Hip Hop and liking his music.

    This site is not the place for many mainstream artist (Wayne, Jeezy, Rick Ross, Piles, etc) to get much pup. This site is for the little guy and the underdog. This site is for unknown producers to get their work out to a couple of thousand people a day. This site is for unsigned artist such as Trav Williams, Tudakay, Has-Lo, J the S, Ntelligence, etc to get some shine. I could go on, but I think the point is made. Lil Wayne does not fit into that category.

    Xxlmag.com, hiphopdx.com, and many others can give you your daily fix for Lil Wayne and whomever else is missing on this site.

    Now of course Jay-Z, Ye, and some other superstar rappers/producers get much love here, but you won’t see much of what is playing on the radio on this site.

    “YOUR litte musical Boombox.lol” is funny because Kev has put me on to so much new music (which is different from what I’m use to) since coming here that I almost fell out my seat reading that.

    Probably, the last thing I’m going to say is you seem to have caught some feelings or feel a certain way about a Lil Wayne remix that didn’t get put on the site. Was it yours? I’m just asking.

    Now as far as saying “you post soooooo much Bullshit ass Remixes” now you done cross the line. You can’t tell me that the remixtape is wack. Tell me when listening to 20 Key’s Outkast remix that it’s not hot? Tell me that S.T.T.R.E.S.S.’s “Hey Papi” joint isn’t hot. Tell me any of G.C.’s joints aren’t hot? Tell me Isberj’s “Time’s Up” isn’t hot. Do you listen or skim through music.

    Now your dissing a bunch of men that put their all into those remixes. That statement is the same type of statement you’re bitchin at Kevin about. How much sense does that make?

    I’m not certain where you get that the site has had “bullshit” for the last couple of months…not sure where that is coming from. The content on the site has remained the same since I started visiting daily about 9-10 months ago. The only thing that has changed is additional staff/contributors to the site such as myself, Sean, Beads, Krome, and Carsten. We have our own taste, but Kev controls what gets published on the site….because it does say http://www.kevinnottingham.com by the way. Duh!

    Plus, if you don’t like the content, his words, my words, Sean’s words or anyone else down with the site then “push shit along.” We appreciate the support though.

    Yeah, I never said I’m gonna stop liking Musiq because of this song. I basically just said, “WTF?”. If his new album is consistent with the quality of music I’ve come to love with Musiq, I’m gonna cop it and just cut out this track! :)

Everytime she opens her mouth (with Charlie Gibson and Katie Couric) she is proving to be a liability to the campaign. There are sooooooo many more qualified women out there that should have gotten the call.
