Most Ridiculous Sample Ever Used in Rap History?

by Carsten on September 29, 2008 · 33 comments

After I pointed out that a lot of todays Hip Hop is influenced by European dance music, this one right here just fits perfect.

When I was listening to T.I.’s new LP Paper Trail, I couldn’t believe what I heard – track number 5, “Live Your Life”, featuring Rihanna and produced by non other than Just Blaze.  There it was: “Ma-ia-hii, Ma-ia-huu, Ma-ia-hoo, Ma-ia-haa“!!!

The track samples the — well, let me say it like this — very controversial song “Dragostea Din Tei” performed by the Moldovan dance trio O-Zone.

The song is written in Romanian and was a huge summer hit over here in Europe back in 2004.  I don’t know who’s idea it was to sample that crazy song but one thing is clear, he must have been thinkin’: “It was a huge hit overseases so it should be a hit over here“!

Compare the two for yourself:

“Dragostea Din Tei” by O-Zone

“Live Your Life” by T.I. (feat. Rihanna)

damnnnnnnn, i had no idea that was sample!!! I think I liked the song more before hearing about where the sample came from. lol wow! talk about reachin’

2 Sterfish September 29, 2008 at 8:55 pm

It’s not about the sample. It’s about how it’s used. Yeah, it’s an unusual song to sample but how is that any more ridiculous than some of the samples Kanye West, J. Dilla, and Prince Paul have used?

3 S.T.T.R.E.S.S. September 29, 2008 at 8:57 pm

Yo,forget where the sample came from,if u really listen to what Just Blaze and Rihanna did for that track is genius IMO.They should get credit just for pulling that one off.Talk about mash up!Of course I really dont see them totally pulling that track off without Rihanna. She just adds that touch to it,cause it sounds like something right down her alley.I can also hear Jeezy spitting to that track.

4 S.T.T.R.E.S.S. September 29, 2008 at 9:12 pm

But definitely, the original is OUT THERE????????

5 anony September 29, 2008 at 9:29 pm

Rihanna didn’t do anything for this song. #3 is acting like she’s an angel and she bestowed her divine presence on this. T.I. could’ve done this alone. She ain’t special lol..

I had rolled my eyes when I first heard this sample being used in this song. Do you all remember the YouTube video of the kid lip syncing to this song going around a few years ago?

Anyway, yeah the original sample sucks, but I honestly think this was one of the better tracks on Paper Trail.

Yo Playa, take that negative vibe back to the blog you got it from,PARTNA!!! Either comment about the song,or leave it be!

8 S.T.T.R.E.S.S. September 29, 2008 at 9:39 pm

This has nothing to do with T.I.,its about the track!

9 Jeruselum September 29, 2008 at 11:33 pm

is the sample used in more than the beginning cause I can’t hear it, and I do feel that putting rihanna on the song was a good look cause of the type of record it is and the fact that she just got off a double if not triple plat album, I’m not even a rihanna fan but I think a lot of people like her, she has an international appeal so it was a good move.

nooooo, t.i. doesnt have respect for himself by using this awful beat…. it’s crazy man, just blaze disapoint me on this

11 Ronni Rebel September 30, 2008 at 1:17 am

I’m feelin’ the track! I know a hit when I hear it! S.T.T.R.E.S.S. is right! Rihanna brought crazy spice to the mix!

12 Bongholio September 30, 2008 at 8:44 am

WORST. CRAP. EVER.

It’s soo bad, it’s not even funny.

13 Thomas September 30, 2008 at 9:47 am

I would agree the track has hit written all over it. I actually like the song…..and the other one with J.T..

Be easy Mr. Street Team Executive. We need to play it cool during this time of uncertainly. We need more votes. LOL.

Vote for Kevin Nottingham!

14 Cenzo September 30, 2008 at 10:56 am

yo. kev. i noticed the same thing. you know, im from germany, and – well, mhh- it was a huge hit over here. but i think it sounds cool when rihanna sings the hook with the same melody.

15 qbDaProblembeats September 30, 2008 at 11:49 am

16 Kevin September 30, 2008 at 12:03 pm

17 Theo September 30, 2008 at 1:20 pm

That song was the most annoying song i ever heard. And im from Europe so you can belive me that i almost hate T.I. for this one

18 Bulldog September 30, 2008 at 3:41 pm

SMH at this song and sample

19 SoulClap September 30, 2008 at 5:36 pm

I was voiting a bit when i heard the track first, cause the original track was the worst song ever. But now it’s more funny to me, like a little gimmick, the rest of the track is pretty dope anyway!

20 S.T.T.R.E.S.S. September 30, 2008 at 10:37 pm

Sorry about that one fellas, the McCain was coming out of me. LOL

Hey Thomas,i’m waiting on a reply from that question that you had about the nomination thing.I will brief u A.S.A.P. BOSS!

21 Thomas October 1, 2008 at 12:22 am

Ok Street Team Executive (STE).

22 jayski October 1, 2008 at 1:55 am

Man yall a little late this song been around on the i-net for a 4 or 5 weeks but when I first heard it the beginning to the track I didn’t know what to think but the track is hot I didn’t know my boy Just Bleezy produced it though

23 SeventhSun October 1, 2008 at 8:04 am

I was talking to my boy FredNukes (who is a huge Kanye fan) about this trend the other day.

This particular song sucks IMO, but then I don’t like either T.I. or Rihannah :-)

It’s nice that US hip hop tries out new things, but my main gripe with this trend, is that for (my) european ears it sounds dated almost before it is released.
The thing is that, that the electronica/dance/techno sound is being heavily used and developed over here.

So when US producers sample something that’s a year or two old, it sounds like they’re reaching for a hit with a dated sound.

24 Kevin October 1, 2008 at 8:35 am

Yeah man, I could def understand for you cats in Europe.

And yeah Jayski, maybe a little late on the song, but it’s called promotional timing. If everyone talked about Paper Trail weeks ago when it leaked, they would consider the album old news by the time it’s due in stores. The article was written a couple weeks ago, but we chose to post it now to coincide with the album release date.

Paper Trail in stores now… go cop that shit, if you’re feeling it.

25 Rouh October 2, 2008 at 1:18 pm

Just is one of the greatest producers ever, but this song is wack, crap, whatever u wanna call it… it’s like primo using a backstreet boys sample ! Or 9th using a celine dion… and not even flip it good

26 Kevin October 2, 2008 at 1:38 pm

Funny you say that… I heard 9th may be in the studio with Celine Dion working on her new album. No joke. Unless I heard wrong. Same source told me he was working with Luda too and that turned out to be true.

27 sho October 2, 2008 at 2:16 pm

I have a lot of respect for your work Kevin, but how can you call your blog “This is hip-hop” and post on it song like this ?

These new so called “hip-hop artists” ruined this music form.

28 Kevin October 2, 2008 at 2:30 pm

haha, I hear you sho. But last I checked, T.I. was still hip-hop. No?

29 sho October 3, 2008 at 7:30 pm

Hell no! Dude can’t rap at all!
But each to their own.

Peace.

30 Kevin October 3, 2008 at 9:15 pm

um, ok…. I don’t think T.I. as an artist (or emcee, for that matter) was the issue. Take away T.I. from the track. The article is referencing the sample used in the beat. A beat produced by Just Blaze. Explain to me again how this is not hip hop?

31 Bmk November 30, 2008 at 9:01 pm

Lmaoo that funny chubby kid was lip syching that on Youtube, had like 5246245914785728904 views.
