Honey Cone: ”Innocent ‘Til Proven Guilty”
From the album  Love, Peace, and Soul (1972)

Murs: “I’m Innocent”
From the album Murs For President (2008)
Produced by 9th Wonder

Common: “Testify”
From the album Be (2005)
Produced by Kanye West

I’ve been rockin’ the new Murs album all day today.  As I’m reading through the linear note (or credits), I notice that one of my favorite tracks on the album (the 9th Wonder-produced “I’m Innocent”) samples the same track Kanye West used on Common‘s “Testify” a few years ago!  I couldn’t believe my eyes.  As I listened closer I could definitely hear the sample, but DAMN did Ninth flip the hell out of that or what?

I gotta give props to Kanye, who flipped it first on one of my favorite tracks from Be.  But what do you all think?  Who flipped it better?

Oh yeah, by the way…. I normally don’t do this, but… Murs For President: Original Samples coming soon!

Who flipped Honey Cone better?

9th Wonder all day! Always better than Kanye.

Well, for one thing,i’m not the biggest fan of “overpowering” vocals in a sample being used, cause it takes away from the MC and both tracks did so.If I have to vote for one of them,i would give it to 9th,cause the vibe was better!

    9TH Wondra all day

  • http://kevinnottingham.com Thomas

I like the overpowering vocals….reminds me of early RZA. Both do a good job of using the sample. Like Ye’s better tho….by a slim margin.

    Vote for Kevin!!

i’m innocent is the song of the year so far..

  • ezwelchman

    9th for sure….
kanye’s version was too distracting..the sample was too loud and obvious and clashed with commons vocals and made it next to impossible to pay attention to him…

  • jeff

    yo kevin…

you wouldnt happen to have that whole HONEY CONE lp would you?

  • SbuJah

Wud have to listen to the original to make a better judgement but I prefer the 9th version anyway

    ***

I like the MURS album but the line about buying tampons for ur woman off love and appreciation 2 is the worst line of the year..period…no pun intended!!!

  • Marcha

very tough, the kanye version for a little

  • http://kevinnottingham.com Kevin

Yeah, I’m kinda siding with the 9th beat, just cuz it’s so fresh and new and he flipped it in a totally different way.

SbuJah, the original song is posted above with the others for you to check out.

Jeff, nah I don’t have the Honey Cone LP.

  • Jason

ahh geez i dunno! tough one!
although u think Ye’s was the obvious way of flipping the sample while 9ths sounds fresh, is that just coz we heard Ye’s version first??

if i had to choose, id say Ye…i mean he created a track that sounds so dark compared to the original, and all that off the first few seconds of the song!

Am I the only one that doesn’t like these new drum kits 9th is using? The generic snaps and hand claps? I miss the cracking snares of his old joints.

9th is dope, but I gotta say Kanye got this one.

  • Thomas

The only difference between the two is the “kick” of the drums. Ye’s hit harder to me. But, Murs sound dope boy fresh over 9th’s production.

    Vote for Kevin!!

  • trapperjohnmd

Both are dope. I would say 9th because it’s more aggressive. I agree with Thomas about the Rza comparison. Again both are dope though

I need to start putting up a poll with these types of posts…..

  • capchino

    9th Indeed!

  • Mike

line of the year so far… “I like Madden but I love orgasms”

  • KLoNe

I like Yeezy but 9th did a number on this 1…woooo

  • Jeruselum

I think the story Comm Sense had made the Kanye track while the 9th track sounds like something I could listen to just in instrumental form. So as a record like the Comm Sense record but production 9ths is fresher

I need this instrumental ASAP! Both Kanye and 9th flipped the sample nicely. I enjoy hearing 9th expand his sound (heavier drums) so I’ll give it to 9th.

Also.. The beginning sounds like The Rulers Back Intro from Jay’s Blueprint.

I understand what Kanye was doing, the idea was sick… But the nigga 9th was sicker… hands down!!!
