New Music Tuesday: September 30, 2008

It’s finally here…. the day hip hop fans go broke everywhere! LOL… We’ve actually been looking forward to this day; a day where we have some very dope albums all dropping on one day.  Yeah, all of the albums above have leaked and most of you have heard them, but which ones will you be shelling out your hard earned cash for?  Which ones are worth the dough?

I’m not gonna tell you which ones to buy; however, I will give my recommendations…

The last couple of weeks, we ran a poll asking you which album would you be supporting today.  Here are the results…

WHAT ALBUM ARE YOU SUPPORTING ON 9/30/08?

  • Murs - Murs 4 President (21%, 62 Votes)
  • Heltah Skeltah - D.I.R.T. (17%, 48 Votes)
  • Madlib - WLIB AM: King Of The Wigflip (16%, 46 Votes)
  • T.I. - Paper Trail (13%, 39 Votes)
  • Termanology - Politics As Usual (11%, 32 Votes)
  • Large Pro - Main Source (9%, 26 Votes)
  • Jean Grae & BSBD - The Evil Jeanius (6%, 16 Votes)
  • Robin Thicke - Something Else (4%, 13 Votes)
  • Ayatollah - Drum Machine (3%, 8 Votes)

Total Voters: 290

I was happy to see Murs in the lead.  This is one that I will definitely be coppin’.  Best Buy has it for $9.99, so there’s no excuse… that’s cheap!  For those of you willing to lay down a little extra cash, it’s also being released as a Special Edition, which includes a DVD with a short half-hour “spy” movie starring Murs.  Should be interesting… I may have to get the special edition.

Next in the polls is the new album from Heltah Skeltah.  I’ve heard a lot of people are really feeling this album.  I too was looking forward to it.  However, I just wasn’t feeling it.  I know both Deez and Thomas were digging it, so maybe they can chime in with their thoughts on D.I.R.T.

Coming in very close behind Heltah Skeltah is the new Madlib album!  I actually have not heard this one.  Nice to see lots of Madlib suporters on the site though.  Anyone heard it?  How is it?

T.I.’s Paper Trail comes in fourth place.  Beleive it or not, I am a T.I. fan.  King, Trap Muzik, and Urban Legend were all very good albums.  His last album, T.I. vs. T.I.P. left me a little stale; however, I feel that one was much better than his latest effort.  I honestly couldn’t get through Paper Trail.  I just wasn’t feeling it.

Termanology is the next album that I personally will be purchasing today.  I was really impressed with this album.  When I first saw the production credits a month ago, I tried not to get my hopes up too high.  But this album really delivers.  Read Deez’s review for his take on it.

The next album up is the new one from Large Pro.  This one actually leaked online nearly two months ago!  I was pretty sad to see that happen, but happy to hear it of course.  You really cannot deny some Large Pro production.  This album, called Main Source, literally takes us back to that boom bap from the 90s.  You KNOW I plan to buy this album today!

Bringing up the bottom three, we have Jean Grae’s Evil Jeanius, Robin Thicke’s Something New, and Ayatollah’s Drum Machine.  Out of those three I have only heard the new Robin Thicke. Yeah, I know it’s not a hip hop album, but it is one that I have been looking forward to for a while. His last album, The Evolution of Robin Thicke, is probably my favorite R&B album of this decade.  And Something New is not bad at all; Robin does his thing.  But after buying Murs, Termanology, and Large Pro, my pockets will be empty.  I’ll pick this up in a couple of week.

The Ayatollah album, I have not heard.  But looks like there aren’t too many people interested in it.  The new Jean Grae?  You know how I feel about that one.  Jean apparently does not support it, so I won’t be either.  And I recommend that no one goes out and buy it.  In fact, fuck it, download that shit.  Fuck the label… Jean Grae, get yours!

3 S.2 September 30, 2008 at 8:44 am

I went to the shop all excited to find…. none of these albums! Should have known Australia wouldnt have them yet X(

So I couldn’t help it I DL’d Murs and Heltah Skeltah, but I’ll be buying both.

I’m really, really, really feeling D.I.R.T. Its just rough rugged and raw from start to finish, and lol at the intro from Sean P.

I’m not sure about Murs new one yet. I think my expectations were too high. I’m still buying it but right now theres only about 5 songs I like. But it’l probably grow on me.

I haven’t heard any of the others yet.

I was wondering if you were going to do a post like this.

Murs – This joint is hot. There is really one song that I don’t like on it, but the rest is fire. Is it me or does he sound better over 9th’s production. The mom and pop store had this on sale last night, but for $12.99. I left it in the store because Best Buy has it for $9.99….

Heltah Skeltah – D.I.R.T. has that mid/late 90’s feel to it. Just hard rugged, street, gutter rhymes. You know what you getting with them guns, weed, shit talking….but they do it so well. At first listen I thought Ruck (Sean P) stole the show, but after the 2nd/3rd listen Rock is killing just about every verse. Gettin it.

Madlib – Not really a fan and haven’t heard anything. Passing

T.I. – The mom and pop store had this as well. I’ll probably get it, but not today.

Termanology – Got this from the mom and pop last night. Love the album. I love the cockiness on the mic. I just thought the production overwhelmed him throughout as did his guest. Nice debut from a “Rookie”.

Large Pro – Had this about the same time Kev did when it leaked. Was feeling it from the jump. Mom and pop store didn’t have it, but ordered it for me. I’m hoping Best Buy has it (probably not)….I’ll let you know in about 2-3 hours.

Jean Grae & BSBD – I’ll probably cop the leaky version.

Robin Thicke – Been crankin this for the last couple of days. I actually like this slighty better than Ne-Yo’s joint and I’m a huge Ne-Yo fan (pause). But, I’ll get this probably next week.

Ayatollah – Haven’t heard it or seen any information about it. Someone enlighthen me.

So today I will be getting Murs, HS, Term (have it), and Large Pro.

And don’t forget….VOTE FOR KEVIN NOTTINGHAM!

11 Kevin September 30, 2008 at 12:11 pm

Just got back from Circuit City (it’s the only music store close by). They had T.I. for 8.99… I passed though. They didn’t have Term, nor Large Pro. I’ll have to order online. I found a copy of Murs hidden in the back. They only had like 4 copies. As I suspected though, since it’s a major release, the sample credits are in the CD sleeve. We’ll def has a sample set for Murs For President ready soon.

12 Sean Deez September 30, 2008 at 1:51 pm

MURS MURS MURS MURS MURS MURS

And I’m copping the Raphael Saadiq

13 trapperjohnmd September 30, 2008 at 2:20 pm

Raphael Saadiq album is very dope. Kinda dissapointed in the Murs album. Large Pro album is very dope as well. Term is nice, i think when he speeds his verses up he’s better. His shit talking although dope doesn’t have authentic appeal to them

14 Sean Deez September 30, 2008 at 4:09 pm

Disappointed on the murs album? how?

15 Kevin September 30, 2008 at 4:29 pm

Yeah, I don’t know how anyone could be disappointed in the Murs album. If anything, it exceeded my expectations.

16 trapperjohnmd September 30, 2008 at 8:44 pm

To Me he sounds best of 9th Wonder tracks. That joint with Will I Am is wack. Not feeling all of the beats. Can’t compare to the joints he dropped with 9th Wonder. Oh, DJ Muggs and Planet Asia joint is the shit!

17 Thomas September 30, 2008 at 11:52 pm

trap I’ll agree with you Murs sounds great over 9th’s production, but the joint is hot. I’ve just started paying attention to him recently so I only have his material with 9th to go by.

18 Sean Deez October 1, 2008 at 1:24 am

You can’t expect Murs to stagnate his sound to 9th for the rest of his life.

I was happy to see him evolve passed Grouch and passed 9th and finally try out a variety of producers, including the likes of Snoop Dogg.

Besides, he IS from Cali, he has a very East Coast sound doesn’t he? If anything, this album (mixed by DJ Quik) finally shows some of his West roots that weren’t as evident in his first two 9th jawns as well as some of his other solo work and stuff with LL

My review is coming soon…

19 S.2 October 1, 2008 at 5:41 am

Murs is one of my fav rappers, but I’m simply not feeling this new one as much as his past work. I don’t think its a bad album by any means, but theres no songs on here that really get me going like, for example, H.U.S.T.L.E., Yesterday and Today, God’s Work, The Night Before, or Pusshhh.

20 Jason October 1, 2008 at 9:30 am

murs murs murs!
been bumping that and the streets album exclusively for the past week, and will do for prolly the next few weeks!

Murs has great album, not feeling 3 of the tracks (lookin fly, sooo comfortable & think you know me)
but besides that (and especially from me and this jawn onwards) this album is ridiculous

21 bags October 1, 2008 at 10:56 am

Kev i copped the Large Pro and I’m diggin it.

22 trapperjohnmd October 1, 2008 at 11:28 am

S.2 I agree. Oh no doubt that Large Pro is banging

23 trapperjohnmd October 1, 2008 at 12:16 pm

I’m not a fan of the West Coast Funk. I dig the ones who step outside of the region with their style and beats such as Bishop Lamont, Crooked I, Planet Asia, and The Game

24 BC October 1, 2008 at 3:21 pm

Yo. i only just caught up on the Jean Grae shit, damn thats fucking mad! she is promoting herself, and selling herself, talk about embracing the enemy?

25 filthychick October 1, 2008 at 4:04 pm

I copped the TI.. That was aight. I wanted to get the murs too, but im too poor. Is it good?

26 montell October 1, 2008 at 4:35 pm

i got both the albums murs and t.i. and i have to say the murs album blew me away. that shit was the knock

27 luvlylady October 1, 2008 at 7:04 pm

Murs def blew me away but I expected that! He rap game is sickkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk!

28 tonya October 1, 2008 at 8:30 pm

yeah murs! the new album is insane! props to you and quik! start your own duo

29 BK77 October 2, 2008 at 3:49 am

Murs album is alright, Madlib is alright (big Madlib fan). Best shit I heard from Murs today, ironically, is the short joint hes got on Madlib’s album, “Ratrace”.

30 nofrillz October 4, 2008 at 4:57 am

yeah we all like murs & 9th together, but MFP is superb. the man stretched his wings superbly. but one of those bonus tracks that didn tmake the album is trash. definately the right move to leave it out.

31 Thomas October 15, 2008 at 1:02 am

Ayatollah – Drum Machine is a digital only release.

Jean Grae & BSBD – The Evil Jeanius is hot. Not sure if these are old verses, but it bangs from track 1 to track 10.

Heltah Skeltah – D.I.R.T. this joints bangs hard.

32 Thomas October 20, 2008 at 11:26 pm

That Jean Grae joint is fire my friends. I’m repeating myself, but…damn.
