The Foreign Exchange Week

by Kevin on October 12, 2008 · 20 comments

Welcome to The Foreign Exchange Week at This Is Hip Hop!  I thought it was more than necessary to dedicate a whole week to the duo comprised of one of my favorite producers, Nicolay, and one of my favorite emcees, Phonte.

All week we will be celebrating the release of The Foreign Exchange’s brand new album, Leave It All BehindLeave It All Behind is the long awaited follow-up to their critically acclaimed 2004 debut, Connected.  The new album, in stores in the U.S. this Tuesday, has been my most anticipated hip hop release for this year…. but wait — turns out Leave It All Behind is not a hip hop album!  Looks like Nic and Phonte got their grown man game on and decided to do a R&B/Soul album.  What ever they wanna call it, it’s plain and simple good music and it has met just about every expectation I had for the album.

We’re gonna leave the official review for my man Deez, but for the record…. I love the new album.  For those of you who have not gotten the album yet, you can grab it now off iTunes.  Or if you wanna wait for the full package, which includes the instrumental version of the album, preorder now through TheForeignExchangeMusic.com.

If you got the album already, I’m curious as to what you think about it…

What do you think of the new Foreign Exchange album?

Another good week of quality post. This is the reason ya’ll need to vote for Kev!

I’ve heard the album and I think the music is good. I just like Phonte the rapper instead of Phonte the singer. The one positive about the album is no cursing and I can rock it in the car with my son/daughter. One and a half verses from Phonte is not enough for me though.

Vote for Kevin!!

Sorry I havent been promoting alot Thomas, but when you,re the Street Team Executive,my grind is exactly that,THE STREET LEVEL!!!!!! I’ve been a big supporter of Nicolay for a minute now and probably before alot of people even knew who he was.His musical I.Q.is extraordinary and underrated.I think this album is hot and well worth getting, but I will agree with Thomas.Even though Phonte is not bad at singing,he is one of the premier MCs out there right now. There need to be a balance, somewhere. This will make the 2nd album in a row, that he has not displayed his lyrical skills. On that note,It is still a must get,but it just doesnt feel like a follow up to “Connected”.

I def hear what you all are saying, but I can appreciate the direction Nic and Phonte decided to go in. If anyone’s looking for Connected 2, I suggest they check out TIME:LINE, one of the other dope albums released this year.

5 S.T.T.R.E.S.S. October 12, 2008 at 5:07 pm

Well,it’s not exactly a Connected 2,cause Timeline is basically Nic & Kay’s project, not Nic & Phonte’s.It’s just not quite the same.

True, S.T.T.R.E.S.S., but you gotta admit it’s a hell of a great album.

you know what im gonna say about this album! its fucking brilliant
i mean yeah, after the (small) disappointment of no raps, u appreciate this album for what it is, and appreciate the two verses Tay does spit on it!

i say for people who were after another connected – just go listen to connected! theres 17 tracks of connectedness to chillax to

i do get the feeling this album is not as chilled out sunday afternoon as connected is tho :P

the a;bum is superb but i agree, the phonte factor was initially a let down for me. but nonetheless this is a very, very good album. not as good as donnected in my opinion though.

Dissapointed, I was hoping Phonte would just rap, maybe sing a few choruses or whatever, its not that he cant sing, but I was waiting on something else. But still I feel its a good record, nicolay is just awesome.

I promise I’m not just saying it cos Phonte raps on this track (!) but does anyone else think Something to Behold is maybe the best track on the album? What tracks are everyone else feeling?

17 Kevin October 13, 2008 at 2:25 pm

Yeah, “Something To Behold” is one of my fav tracks off the album, along with “Daykeeper”. I can’t think of a track on the album that I don’t like. Maybe “House of Cards” not so much.

18 Thomas October 13, 2008 at 3:16 pm

Even though I like rapping Phonte better…”Daydreamer” “I Wanna Know”, “Something To Behold”, and “All or Nothing/Coming Home to You” are getting the spins from.

Vote Kevin!
