Below The Heavens: Original Samples

Ah, I’m so glad to finally get this set off my hard drive!  You all have no idea how long we’ve been working on this set.  I would say probably since the beginning of the year.  We’ll it’s as complete as it’s gonna get for now and I know a lot of people want this one.  Lot’s of 90s hip hop in this set (Nas, Pete Rock) sprinkled in throughout the soul samples.  Exile did a hell of a job producing this whole album… easily one of my favorites from last year.  Unfortunately, they must not have made too many copies, cuz the album has been out of print for about a year now.  I didn’t get a chance to pick it up when it first came out and now I can’t find it anywhere.  If anyone has some spare copies of this CD laying around, hit us up.  Both Thomas and I are looking for copies of this to add to our collections.

was there no sample for cold hearted?

3 Marcha October 19, 2008 at 4:56 am

yeah, it’s missing a lot of samples but it’s insanely hard to find the others, exile did his job really REALLY well.

The best album a lot of people haven’t heard. BTW Amazon doesn’t have it less than $89…we’ve looked for it.

Thanks for the update on samples.

7 Kevin October 19, 2008 at 12:14 pm

haha, thanks Matt… ass… lol. Amazon don’t have it though. I think there was one private seller on Amazon selling it used for like $89. I don’t want it that bad.

Thanks to Paul and TFF for the sample credits! I’ll get those and update this set.

Why not just pay 9.99 at the itunes store? I can’t believe that album is out of print already. I know physical copies are nice, but i’ve lost one too many copies to friends like illmatic.

9 Thomas October 19, 2008 at 1:21 pm

I like physical copies. I don’t loan out my cd’s to anyone…so I’m not worried about losing them. I like the cd booklet and credits as well (seeing them).

10 Tokyo Cigar October 19, 2008 at 5:56 pm

Yo Thomas i feel you bout reading credits on CD’s. Questlove hands down had the best ones cause he would always break down the making of the album in the liner notes. I cant front though i still download certain joints cause i’m far from balling.

Does anyone know what exile used for “cold hearted” That beat always sends chills down my spine.

11 Kevin October 19, 2008 at 6:27 pm

I’ve already paid 9.99 for the album on iTunes. Thomas got me into collecting physical CDs again. It’s an art long lost, I guess.

12 Thomas October 19, 2008 at 7:37 pm

I’m not totally in the “digital” age as far as putting things all on the iPod and having a who hard drive of music. I’m scared to death that if I go all digital and my computer crashes and I lose everything….I don’t have confidence me calling Amazon or iTunes/Apple will hit me off with the music I lost. Plus, the music sounds better on CD in the car than it does on the iPod.

Toyko don’t know the sample.

13 CrystalEYE October 23, 2008 at 1:21 pm

I found the album available on a german site I use to order my CDs. They still got it on stock for around 21 USD plus shipping.

Beautiful Cover artwork, by the way!

Jon Brion’s version of he needs me in Punch Drunk Love should sound familiar to anyone who likes the bonus instrumental at the end

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4PwsDb6K6S0

and i remember hearing in that rbma session that the sample for the other bonus track was actually some cookie monster song or something

15 Paul October 24, 2008 at 8:53 am

The Impressions – I’m So Glad
First Impressions 1975

Let me know if you can.

16 Randy October 24, 2008 at 3:13 pm

man, if youre in Toronto, and were looking for the CD at the right time, it actually wasnt that hard to find. The HMV downtown musta sold at least ten cuz they restocked the blu and exile section a couple times when they imported it. play de record actually had it around the time it actually came out in the summer without the import price too.

17 Kevin October 24, 2008 at 4:50 pm

Not in Toronto… you must be thinking of Deez.

18 Gerard October 26, 2008 at 9:18 pm

the artist for the track “when sonny gets blue” which was sampled at the end of blu collar worker is sarah vaughan and i think that french joint “love is blue” which was sampled on my world is, is by paul mauriat, maybe!!!

19 Gerard October 26, 2008 at 9:24 pm

fo the record, i just recently order 2 copies of the below the heaven album!!! GYEAH!

20 Kevin October 26, 2008 at 9:31 pm

Thanks Gerard… I’ll check out the Sarah Vaughan track. And “Love Is Blue” was originally written by Paul Mauriat, but has been recorded by many.

Where did you order your copies? I need 2.
