Q-Tip: Best Productions

by Kevin on November 4, 2008 · 10 comments

Aside from being one of the dopest emcees in hip hop, Q-Tip should also be recognized as one of the dopest producers in the genre.  Though his work with A Tribe Called Quest was credited to the whole group, Tip was indeed the beat crafter. Later in his career, Tip would also team with the legendary J Dilla to form The Ummah production team. As a solo producer, The Abstract remixed/produced tracks for Nas, Mobb Deep, Cypress Hill and Busta Rhymes, among others. This collection highlights that work…

  1. Cyprus Hill – Illusions [Q-Tip Remix]
  2. Da Bush Babees – Gravity
  3. Craig Mack – Get Down [Q-Tip Remix]
  4. Nas – The World Is Yours [Q-Tip Remix]
  5. Busta Rhymes – Wild Hot
  6. Mobb Deep – Temperature’s Rising
  7. Fu-Schnickens – Heavenly Father
  8. Da Bush Babees – We Run Tings
  9. Nas – One Love
  10. Crooklyn Dodgers – Crooklyn
  11. Busta Rhymes – Ill Vibe
  12. Keith Murray – Dangerous Ground
  13. Shola Ama – Lovely Affair
  14. Da Bush Babees – 3 MCs
  15. Apache – Gangsta Bitch
  16. The Jungle Brothers – On The Road Again [Q-Tip Remix]
  17. Mobb Deep – Give Up The Goods (Just Step)
  18. Busta Rhymes – So Hardcore
  19. Run-D.M.C. – Come On Everybody
  20. Tiger – Who Planned It

Dope Shit Kev, great mix, I’ll post this around

Funny enough, this conversation was brought up on a message board as of late. Is Q-Tip in fact the best blend of Rapper/Producer?
Sure there are better rappers than him, and sure there are better producers than him. But is he the most consistent and contains the best blend of them?

I think he’s easily a top 3 but here were other names to come to mind:
Redman (my pick)
Pharaohe Monch
Kanye West
Erick Sermon
Pete Rock
etc..

That’s a real interesting topic Deez and I will go out and say that Q-Tip is definitely the most consistent emcee/producer. The others you listed are contenders, especially Monch and Sermon. I’m not up on Redman’s productions and didn’t know Pete Rock rapped. I’m sure a lot of people would say Kanye, but really, Kanye has a terrible flow.

Didn’t Know petey rapped?!?!?!
Kev, have you listened to PEte Rock and CL Smooth? Lol. He raps quite a bit on the Soul Survivor series too!

Redman produced the entire Dare Iz album and co-produced the entire Whut album. I’m pretty sure Muddy is him too

Kanye a terrible flow eh?

haha, I guess since I’m a beathead, I never realized Pete rapped. I had always assumed it was all CL! Guess I need to break out the old cassettes! And Redman produced the whole Whut album… yeah, I missed that too. That album is dope production-wise. I need to read credits more…

Yo the Apache joint is still my shit. I think that wild hot was one of tips illest beats ever, he flipped the Lalo joint even better than Diamond d.

Could you count MF Doom in your Producer / Rapper thing?
