ATCQ: The Low End Theory

Even if Tribe never recorded a second album, they would still be regarded as Hip Hop royalty. Luckily, the group, which was now a trio, dropped, The Low End Theory. Tribe perfected the sound they were looking for on their second album. The beats are minimal but effective and Q-Tip and Phife really hit their lyrical prime on The Low End Theory.

It’s hard to break down this album track by track or to even pick out my favorite joints because it blends so perfectly together. “Excursions” lead off the album and after hearing this, you know you are in for an experience. The string bass provided by Ron Carter is infectious and you hear Q-Tip’s progression from the debut album. “Scenario” is a perfect posse song and we are introduced to Busta Rhymes. At the time people may not have known how much of a star Busta would become; thank you Q-Tip! The album now is in the midst of a stretch that may be unmatched, except by themselves. “Buggin Out”, “Rap Promoter”, “Butter”, “Verses From the Abstract”, “Vibes and Stuff” and “the Infamous Date Rape”. All are unique and strong in their own ways. Once again showing the subtle complexities incorporated within Tribe. And if these songs aren’t enough, we get hit with “Check the Rhime”. Minimalist beat with a catchy hook, sounds like an oxymoron but this is exactly what we encounter. “You on point Phife, all the time Tip/ You on point Phife, all the time Tip/ Well then grab the microphone and let your word rip“. Simple, yet so dope, and the phrase would be stuck in your head forever.

It’s amazing to think that A Tribe Called Quest could gradually improve from their classic debut album, however they figured out how to do it. Addition by subtraction has never been displayed better in the Hip Hop world. Stripped down beats and witty lyrics make, The Low End Theory a staple for generations of emcee’s to come. Many people call this album a “Jazz/Hip Hop Fusion” but don’t get it confused, Tribe built on De La Soul’s groundwork and showed us that Hip Hop is Hip Hop no matter how hard the beats hit or how complex the emcee’s are!

Overall Score: 5/5

My favourite album ever.

My message alert tone on my phone is “Classic…Classic…” from Infamous Date Rape.

The perfect album, length, quality, beats, rhymes, subject matter, musicality…

“Although I’m here to pound the herbs, I’m still nice with the verbs…”

This album for me is what any album should embody. Put it on press play and go about your business. I put this joint into my walkman and just played it to death every cut was blazin’ to me. This biggest tragedy for this album was ATCQ got jerked for their royalties for this hip hop classic. Good work as usual Beads

I echo the sentiments. I’m sure my roommates hated me because I ran this album into the ground! Couldn’t get enough of Butter. Still can’t to this day.

this might be one of the greatest albums ever.

While many claim the Midnight is better, I do think that Low End Theory is the more important and relevant album.

Good review, although to call “Check The Rhime” a minimal beat is a little “ehhhh.” I think that Bass sneaks up on you and hits you hard… twice…. those horns cram up the system and its amazing and it also allows Tip and Phife to display one of the greatest back and forth’s in hip hop history

This is one the best albums ever for me, regardless of genre. It’s the soundtrack for my first year in college! I still play it at least once a week to this day.
