A Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul, and The Jungle Brothers. They were the principle members of a group of hip hop artists known for their positive-minded, good-naturedly Afrocentric lyrics, and for pioneering the use of eclectic sampling and jazz-influenced beats called the Native Tongue Posse. They helped pioneer what we call conscious or alternative hip hop. Fosterd by DJ Red Alert, the Posse would soon be joined by Leaders of the New School, Queen Latifah, Monie Love, Chi-Ali, and Black Sheep.
Though the group never recorded anything under the Native Tongue name, the discography is extensive and soon saw the addition of members such as Common, Mos Def, Da Bush Babies, Talib Kweli, The Beatnuts, Slum Village, and Pharoahe Monch. Singer Vinia Mojica also played a pivital role.
Not every track here includes Q-Tip. I’ve been wanting to do this compilation for a while and figured Q-Tip Week was the perfect time to drop it. Though you will see Q-Tip is feature on most of these tracks. Coming up with a Native Tongue Posse compilation was dificult as it was tough to decide what tracks were true Native Posse cuts. We went with our gut and gathered the best collaborations that we could. Of course there were many, so this turned into a 2 disc compilation. Here’s part one and we’ll drop part two tomorrow!
