You know we couldn’t finish up Q-Tip Week without doing a couple of sample flips! Tip‘s hit song “Vivrant Thing” off his debut solo album uses a sample from Love Unlimited Orchestra‘s “I Wanna Stay”. Underground Oakland hip hop duo The Coup used the same sample in their track “Sneakin’ In”. Who flipped it better?

i hate the drum kit boots used.

  • chello

ahhhh the dilla/tip drums on that song are knockin’.. even they didnt flip the sample too much, the drums are knockin, the boot kick joint is ok.

  • G21

why you call it q-tip/dilla when it’s a dilla beat and no q-tip rap?
isnt that like saying c.r.e.a.m. is by “U-God/RZA”?

  • sunizra

both beats aren’t very imaginative so I didn’t vote

I like how Boots chopped it, but for me, The Dilla one bangs. It has more depth and shake, plus Tip blessed it nice. I can’t imagine another MC on this version.

G21, show me where “Vivrant Thing” is credited only to Jay Dee. In my booklet it says Jay Dee & Q-Tip. I realized I fucked up the first time when I just listed Q; he’s what I had on my mind since I was running Q-Tip week. Show me and I will correct this whole post just for you.

Kev, regarding jay dee/qtip/ummah — there’s more than a couple beats credited only to qtip, ummah, or others (like that janet jackson track) that were simply jay dee productions. “vivrant thing” is one which has always been known as a jay dee track. i mean, ask just about anyone know is up on rap producers. that’s cute that you checked your booklet though.

That Coup album is classic. One of the most unknown/underrated groups in hip hop history. Always dropping knowledge.

Yeah it is a classic. When I was putting this post together I pulled that CD out and forgotten how good it was.

That’s why I got mad love for you Kevin… cuz you are HIP HOP! Plus all the downloads!! haha

  • ms.beatjunkie

Hmmm, no comparison. the drums on dilla’s joint are so dope…i makes the rest of the track stand out…i thought i was listeing to some “bluesy” juke joint track when i heard Coup’s
