Welcome to Common Week!

Here we go, another artist-themed week here on the site! We had originally planned to do this last week to coincide with the release of Universal Mind Control (read our review here), but we got behind. Whether you’re diggin’ the new album or not, you cannot denounce the lyrical skills of Mr. Lonnie Lynn.  He is definitely on my list of Top 5 emcees to have ever graced the mic. So, I wanted to take a week to dedicate to Common. We’ll hit up the usual features that we normally do during artist-themed weeks… reviews, samples, videos, mixtapes, etc. Hope you all enjoy!

First off, as far as i’m concerned, Common is no longer a good mc. He used to be, but then he got the acting bug which was a bad move. Yes, he used to be a dope mc, i will not deny that. The last good album he put out was “BE”. After that it all went downhill. Sorry, but he is not a good actor. Personally, the only mc’s who can act are Cube, LL, and Mos. The rest should stick to rappin, seriously.

Common fell off, started showin his face on Vh1 and such. Hopefully he’ll realize what he’s done and come back like Talib did. I won’t even get into that for the moment. I’ll save that for talib week.

Ending verdict: Common is mad corny yo. Although his performance in American Gangster was phenomenal (yeah, ok).

Interesting opinion… I wouldn’t say that Com is no longer a good emcee. Maybe he’s not as focused as he used to be, but he’s still a lot better than half the emcees out right now. BE is a classic, no doubt, but I thought Finding Forever was a great follow up. He’s getting a lot of slack for UMC, but I’m diggin’ it. I don’t know, to each their own I guess.

Don’t worry though man, most of the stuff we got coming this week will be 90s Common. So I think you’ll enjoy it!

I was talking to a friend of mine about Common, and how people were giving him a lot of slack for Electric Circus, and how a lot of hardcore hiphop heads were swearing up and down that they will never listen to him again- pointing out that it was Erykah’s fault. In all honesty, I personally NEVER heard Electric Circus but from what people were telling me, there were a lot of sick verses that he was spitting- seriously…

which is why Common put out “BE”. Supposedly it was hiphop’s “saviour”. I admit. I went along with the ‘crowd’. But from the conversation that my friend and I had, BE is definitely a GREAT album, and Finding Forever [again]- caught slack from alot of heads.. I personally found it to be a great album… there is so much growth going on in that album!- yet people dont see it! it’s like they expect an artist to stay in the same place- which i find stupid..

it’s sad that people hate to see an artist grow.. just like Nas- especially when he dropped Street’s Disciple- people HATED that album because he got SOFT. Damn, he was going thru alot.. i aint mad at him. I liked the first two joints that started off the album!

I havent heard UMC yet, but im definitely buying it!
