10. Ludacris: Theater of the Mind

- The great tracks are great, don’t get me wrong, but they certainly set the bar ridiculously high. This led to a rather sub-par album with loads and loads of filler. The features get tired as well; Luda’s best tracks are the ones when it’s just him, so, why not stick with what works?
9. Nas: Untitled

- With Nas, you’ll always get your lyrical content, that’s no surprise. The coin flip comes with production and well, the coin falls off the table and into that crack in the wall. We’ll never know the outcome of Nasir’s beat choice because they all change, but we are rattled with the frustration of shotty, tacky production and a limited and seemingly lazy conceptual album. It could’ve been so much more.
8. Madlib: WLIB AM King of the Wigflip

- With Madlib, it’s really hit and miss. This was the latter. Some tracks bang, but others bore to a ridiculous flop. It’s a really painful listen at times and to listen to a Madlib album is to do an ear workout when you really don’t want to.
7. Buckshot & 9th Wonder: The Formula

- The “chemistry” still isn’t there. 9th’s beats limit Buck and degrade him to this overly sensitive MC; one who is much too laid back. We get no fire from Buck and we get no bangers from 9th (at least not the amount that we are used to). It was a gradual upgrade from their previous effort, but there is still a lot of work in the lab to be done.
6. Fakts One: Long Range

- I don’t know what’s more disappointing, how mediocre this album was with all the talent behind it or the lack of attention it got from just about everyone (check the 0 comments on my review). With names like BCC, Little Brother and J-Live, you’d expect a great album; unfortunately, those aforementioned names provide the only bright spots.
5. Pete Rock: NY’s Finest

- Wow. Is this the same guy who brought us all those classics? I mean, sure, there are some dope tracks on this, like 2 or 3, but when the track with Jim Jones is the strongest on the album, there’s a problem. Pete on the microphone is worse than ever and his production sounds like he’s trying to fit in with the cool kids at recess. See that double entendre there? That’s better than just about any PR lyric on the album.
4. Immortal Technique: The 3rd World

- Perhaps this album needs to be taken with a grain of salt or a ton of liquor. There are two ways of looking at it: one, a ridiculously in depth political look at this and that or two, what Revolutionary Vol. 2 would’ve sounded like without any inspiration or creativity. It’s bland and it’s sad because I really like Immortal Technique. This was a bore.
3. LL Cool J: Exit 13

- Apparently, this was supposed to be LL’s big coming back to hardcore party. It was still very Modern-LL. I saw no change, and we got the same old jargon from Ladies Love and less of this fiery Mama Said LL that was being talked about. It’s one of the worst albums of the year by an acclaimed Hip Hop legend.
2. KRS One: Adventures in Emceeing & Maximum Strength 2008

- KRS struck out twice this year. Adventures is the worse of the two because Maximum Strength had plenty of flashes of brilliance, but still, that’s still no excuse to drop not one, but two terrible albums in one year. The production has never been worse and KRS has no sense of direction with a particular sound or style. This is my favorite rapper of all time people, understand my pain.
1. Large Professor: The Main Source

- You could go over to some websites and see them talk about how much they loved this album. Frankly, I think this is one of the saddest displays I’ve ever seen this year. Large Pro has never ever had direction in terms of emceeing; he was always rather fun and free-flowing, because, of course, no one could stop him- he was Extra P. Aside from two very good tracks, this album is loaded with about 15 other pathetic tracks including the beautifully craptacular, “Large Pro Says.” No excuses.
