It’s become somewhat of a sensation in Toronto, New York, and Chicago; rapping your favorite hip hop songs live in front of an audience with the original beat. The YouTube videos get a great number of hits and the venues and generally packed to the brim. Some MC’s that come to rip the stage are celebrities in the underground HHK rings, and legends such as Masta Ace and RA the Rugged Man have come through to show support. On Friday, January 16th at the Revival Lounge in Downtown Toronto (489 College West at Shaw) at 11PM (doors at 9PM), Hip Hop Karaoke is going to be in full effect.

KevinNottingham.com in association with Dalia of Never Forgive Action are giving the readers of K Nots an exclusive chance to win some free ish from HHK. Winners of the contest will win the following:

  • Guest List spot (free cover) for you and a guest
  • Hip Hop Karaoke T-Shirt

All you have to do is email me at seandeez93@gmail.com and tell me what song you’d perform at Hip Hop Karaoke if given the chance. You have to be in Ontario or at least in Toronto on Friday.

Even if you don’t win, check out HHK this Friday. Email me if you have any questions.

Anyone know where they’ve done/have this in Chicago?

Cbone, I can’t tell you specifically. You’d have to look around, I’ve heard from it through other people though. Wouldn’t be able to tell you where. They do it in a few places. I think they’ve done it in Vancouver, other places in the states just can’t be specific

lol maybe one of these days ghost. I’ve always wanted to do up NY State of Mind or Nas Is Like.. or something DJ Premier produced. I know the lyrics in my sleep, but I feel like I’d need to prep and stuff.

yo word any premo beat would just get me in the mood.. i’d run “so wussup” or even DWYCK… ILL…

Cooper, I used to think that too, re: Hip Hop + Karoke being tantamount to biting lyrics, but nobody’s trying to claim the lyrics as their own, which is what “biting” really is. In fact it’s really more of an homage to the artists, a chance for you to get up and rock that song you’ve been doing in the car – and it’s a lot of fun too. If you’re an old cat, then you may remember those days.

You gotta get out there and check it out. You might be surprised by some of them. And even the not so serious attempts are entertaining as well.

    ppppppp (pea’s)
