Illmatic Beat Contest: Week 6

Once again it’s on! Yep, after a week off, we’re back with week 6 of our Illmatic Beat Contest. For those of you who don’t know, we’re taking the samples from Nas‘ classic album, Illmatic and flipping them into a new beat. The winning beats will be used by up and coming emcee Trav Williams for his new album IllTravis. This is an excellent opportunity for producers trying to get their name out there.

For more information, read the contest rules and read on for this week’s sample.

For week six, we’re flipping the sample for “Memory Lane (Sitting in The Park)”. The track has four samples, but we’ll be using the main one, “We’re in Love” by Reuben Wilson, for this week. Originally produced by DJ Premier, you all definitely have some big shoes to fill. But remember, this is a beat contest, not a remix contest… there is a difference. So give us your best beat and good luck!

AK, great pianos in here. I like the new melodies you’ve made for the track.

Jeff Wallace- big bongo fan, is that Kanye you got in there? This is really addictive loop- great work. my second favorite.

Tokyo, you put my head in another place with this one. Nice.

Isberg, nice subtle changes, but then this hook … it’s something else. Where were you in 92?

Digi, you and I are on the same page with the sample; big drums too.

Cory, you dug deep in this one. I like your drums too.

Goldie- liked hearing those TROY horns in there, very nice intro. And those vocals thats just jumped out therem awesome.

Franchise- I like the fades on this week; has a slick feel to it.

Jon Baylor- You definitely played around with this a found a chunky little melody to ride to, finessed. Feeling that snare too, popping nicely.

S.2, BIG drums- you and I went for the same chunk too; your track is the reason why I don’t listen to these til after I make my own track, otherwise you would’ve scared me away- and this hook is beautiful. My personal favorite.

Vucaheela, this is a great hook, very nice breakdown.

Soulklap, nasty nas! Can I talk my shit again? I’m bouncing on these drums, little organ in the background, feels good. And give me that choir.

Munkey- This has a got a great style to it, bouncy, sounds coming from everywhere. Very advanced music making.

How the grym was won- great bass- I love the choir in there too, mixes in a wild way.

Peace to everyone, glad to hear some new stuff. This is where a lot of the best new music is coming from in my opinion.

I know what you mean about mixing too. I often have trouble saying, okay I’m done now. I usually mix, and then sleep on it and come back the next day and make adjustments. That way you’ve got fresh ears. But still sometimes I listen to stuff I’ve “finished” later on and think damn I wish I had turned this up/turned that down, etc.

I went through several versions of mine and somehow ended up sticking with the dance-ish version. I’ve actually wanted to experiment with layin a four on the floor type groove for a while. I hope its still rappable!

Each verse is 16 bars and the hook is 8 bars. When you listen make sure you at least listen until the end of the first hook, I do some RZA type beat change.
