Diggin’ With Dilla

dilla

One this day in 2006, we lost one of the world’s greatest crate diggers. J Dilla had that talent for finding a gem and turning it into something completely amazing. He was and always will be your producer’s favorite producer.

I thought long and hard as to whether I should post this set or not. Seems like everytime I reupload the Donuts set, it just taken back down. Between that and my run in last year with Stones Throw over the Madvillainy samples, I wondered if I would be putting the site at risk by posting these samples. But at the end of the day, I figured I want to give the readers what they want. So in remembrance of Dilla, have fun digging through 65 records that Dilla sampled throughout his career. There’s just one catch. Out of respect for Dilla’s legacy, I have chosen not to reveal the track Dilla made out of these samples. Let’s leave that up to the imagination. Grab these now, as I’m not sure how long the link will last.

Thanks for posting this and I fully understand your apprehension in putting this up. As long as people are responsible with this info, everything is cool because the “sample police” are out there…FOR REAL!!!!

15 Marcha February 10, 2009 at 4:53 pm

Kevin, can you post what sample was used in what song or the stones throw records will take the site down if you do it? By the way, i would like to know too, in what album of marvin gaye i can find this “god is love” version? Because my “what’s goin’ on” album came with a diferent and faster version (must be a remastered one)

16 Dr. MaD February 10, 2009 at 5:01 pm

Thank you Kevin. We honored him here in montreal this past saturday night, it was crazy I never thought I would see so much people bouncin’ on Jay Dee beats but anyway, I ate a box of 6 donuts and i’m about to play his music in my crib for aaaaaaall night long.

Rest in beats James!

Kevin,

Thank you for risking this amazing site for your love of your readers. I was supposed to get w/ DJ Grain about doin an interview for his site and this one as well and I got very ill and have yet to follow up w/ grain, That was Decemeber when I 1st heard of this site…..

I gotta say out of 1,000,000’s of sites on the web, this has got to be one of my favorites…. The Dilla posts are dope and haunting at the sametime….. It is hard to celebrate the day when you think about what was lost. I was supposed to perform at the Dilla Benefit saturday w/ SlopFunkDust but I got the Flu and couldnt make it…. I felt super uneasy that I missed the show, So I decided to make use of the time I was supposed to be on stage and I Flipped some Dilla Samples and made a beat….. Then Logic Crashed and I lost it =(

Kevin, not sure if you see these comments or not, but hit me up at DUTCHMASSIVE@GMAIL.COM when you have a sec.

18 Dr. MaD February 10, 2009 at 5:29 pm

24 Jeff February 10, 2009 at 8:44 pm

Marcha, from the “God is Love” Wikipedia entry: “The song was originally recorded as the b-side to “What’s Going On” shortly after that song was recorded. The original 45″ version of “What’s Going On” included a slower, string-laden version of this song as its b-side. The song was later retooled in a more joyous, faster version brought on after the success of “What’s Going On” as a hit song. It also ended in a much faster and abrupt tone leading into the album’s next single, “Mercy Mercy Me (The Ecology)”. The original version has since been re-issued on several greatest-hits sets and re-issues of the album.”

Thanks again! and RIP J. Dilla!!!!

27 supreame February 10, 2009 at 11:43 pm

yo this set is weak as hell. all these samples have been out…nothing surprising here. not one break.
my sample set of dilla destroys this.
beat heads get at me if you need some “rare dilla originals”.

28 Marcha February 11, 2009 at 10:50 am

really thank you Jeff :) .

29 Dr. MaD February 11, 2009 at 2:51 pm

aight supreame but please dont hate…but you can give the samples too I heard some of them (the dilla horns,2morrrow,and some others)

30 Hanz February 22, 2009 at 6:21 pm

I like this post, this is even better than the “de la soul is dead” sample list. i cant think of a better crate digger than dilla! I mean qtip, madlib, pete rock and lord finesse are cool….but dilla flipped records in another way. I wonder what song he flipped backwards for “drop” by the pharcyde?

Yo Fam, I sample, chop whatever… Just cause you have the ingredients… doesn’t mean you make the same sauce… all those overprotective crateheads should chill…they forget… it ain’t “their” music…lol.

46 Sam June 17, 2009 at 9:37 pm

49 Dubulous. September 29, 2009 at 12:45 pm

This is my first post on this site, and I just wanted to let you know that this place is sick. I’ve been diggin around here for a couple days, scoopin up a bunch of samples. I am truly impressed with the work you have compiled. And as a beat maker, I must thank you for making my life easier! RIP Dilla, still live

now we’re on the same page
and it feels like heaven/
but ya know what tugged my soul?
Dilla’s One Eleven/
then he said that Two Can Win
but the music didn’t agree/
and I Can’t Stand To See Her Cry
when she’s sittin’ next to me/
so we kept it Movin’, some Graffiti for the brain/
some music for the soul, played his CD in the rain/
then we heard the Thunder
there was something right before it/
but the Gobstopper god dropped, it helped us to ignore it/
now it’s time to retire
so the Ghost can take you higher/
you go back a couple tracks, and Light a little Fire/
figure it out!
-Dubulous.

50 Dubulous. September 29, 2009 at 12:48 pm

by the way — I would LOVE to see a similar collection from MF Doom beats…..do you see that in your future???

51 beeez November 10, 2009 at 6:51 pm

mad props yo… thank you for this collection, i thought i would never hear some of these…
j dilla was an inspiration and may his legacy live on- there is nothing else to say, the music speaks for itself!!
