80smemories

The goal of Throwback Thursdays is to reminisce back on the urban sounds of the 80s and 90s. Since we started this series back up this year, we’ve tried to showcase mixtapes of that era. So far only the 90s have been represented, since it’s tough to find a digital version of an 80s mixtape. So i decided to create my own mixtape of some 80s gems. Actually, I put this mix together a few years ago, before this blogging ish, back when I went by DJ Kevy Kev.

I call this tape “80s Memories” cuz that’s exactly what it is to me. Everyone has that period in their life where the music just captivated the moment. I’m an 80s child, so this tape holds these memories for me. Breakdancing, fat shoelaces, parachute pants… those were the days. Grant it I was only 10 years old, but very impressionable.

Oh and before I forget to mention it, this ain’t a hip hop mixtape. This is freestyle, baby! 80 minutes of uninterrupted freestyle music mixed by yours truely. Take it with you to the roller skating rink or pull some cardboard out in front of the house!

yo Kev what is the definition of “Freestyle Music”? I went to a concert a couple of years ago in Conn when I lived there and I had never even heard the term Freestyle before. Is it because they are freestyling on the instruments. To me it just seemed like some r&b/pop music.

My boy Kevy Kev killin’ em! keep doing your thing homie.

that was an interesting article. Growing up I never heard the term. I just thought Lisa Lisa and them were considered pop music.
