I love the analogy! I DO see similarities in flow to Rakim. MC Ren’s flow is on point in one of my favs, “Final Frontier”. But to call someone the Rakim of the West Coast is a heavy title. Many believe R is the greatest to ever do it, and I don’t think MC Ren is the best to ever do it in Cali.

BTW, much love to everyone dropping knowledge right now. We may not agree, but that’s the beauty of hip-hop. It does my heart good to see some debate about the West Coast. Keep the comments coming!

I will say that plenty of controversy will come up when we set our lists up. The format isn’t set, but while we do have similar lists, we do disagree heavily with a few.

Post-Death Row, Snoop Dogg has some GREAT material, specifically The Last Meal. Blue Carpet Treatment was much better than I expected, as well. LOL at “Drop It Like It’s Hot” as his hottest material since the old days. I liked it, but it’s clearly not his best.

California has been hurting for a while. The Game gets the most exposure, so he’s the face of the West. Snoop is getting old, Cube hasn’t re-found the fury that was his first 3 albums, etc. but for RIGHT NOW, I’d probably give it to Snoop because I find his body of work and influence much larger and better than Game’s. but forever the King of the West Coast? Probably 2pac. Or Dr. Dre. if there’s no Dr. Dre, there really wouldn’t be much of a West Coast presence in hip hop.

Unfortunately i never got to see Mac Dre live, i have seen gift of gab however and was not very impressed… his freestyles were cool/ but the only reason he kept his flow on is cuz he ran outta shit to say and said “im on the microphone/ ( How many times can you say your on the microphone till we get the message) or somethin about wack mc’s.. That song i put up there proves mac dre has more shit to say…..

and J Fizz, what I meant to say is that Ego Trippin wasn’t bad at all. I was trying to say that UMC and 808s were in the same vein as Ego Trippin, but UMC and 808s failed to reach the quality that Ego Trippin was. I thought Ego Trippin was pulled off very well, and is a testament to Snoop making good music, despite him changing up his style on that one.

Mac Dre is nice, no doubt. but Gift of Gab eats Mac Dre alive when it comes to lyrics and wordplay. and you’d be hard pressed to find anything wack on the Blackalicious albums

But the reason why people don’t see mac dre as the boss that he is is they hear like Thizzle dance and “Get stupid” when they dont understand hes been putting out underground shit since the late eighties, and even made some great records over the phone while in jail…
Maybe he is the king of the bay, and not of all Cali i dunno..

all i know is when i first heard “Da Mac named dre” i thought he was the coolest rapper i heard except for maybe redman…in terms of mcing listen to Life’s a bitch” i think those lyrics and flow is better than any gift of gab. His wordplay is the best shit , and his style, hes got it goin on like none other… true he has some bad and weak ass songs but what artist doesnt, you just talked of how shitty Ego trippin was, mac dre never made anything that weak……

As a Bay Area native, I like Mac Dre, but there are MANY West Coast artists I would listen to over him.

To be “King of the West Coast”, people all up and down Cali have to be checking for you. “Thizzelle Dance” came out in 2002. San Diego didn’t hear about it until 2005.

If I had to choose, I’d probably say Snoop Doggy Dogg, STILL. Ego Trippin is what albums like 808s and Universal Mind Control. Snoop has stayed relevant for so long, it’s ridiculous, and STILL puts out good music.

But strictly MC-wise? Gift of Gab.
