Rass Kass

Love this picture!  Ras Kass is one of the dopest lyricist that the West has to offer in Hip Hop.  However, his production has always been an Achilles heel (along with label drama/incarceration).

So we present you with a double shot of Ras Kass:  the original (produced by Lamont “Bird” Holbdy) and the remix (produced by Diamond D).   Enjoy!

Ras is top 5 all time for me. Both tracks are sick but the Diamond D remix is straight classic. (Typo alert – Achilles heel.)

  • Jorge

I agree with Theory. Ras Kass is a Top 5 MC period. The whole Album” Souls on Ice” was classic and it was ahead of its time. The song Souls on Ice, the original and remix, were both great. A remix was a remix. The remix was a whole new beat with new lyrics the way it was. Now adays a remix is 5 different beats and the same lyrics.

i agree RAS is one of the best lyricists in hip hop..its shame his choice of beats has not always been up to par with his lyrics..”remain anonymous” is one of my personal favorites..its also a shame all the groups he has been associated with never put out an album (WESTERN HEMISPHERE, FOUR HORSEMEN & GOLDEN STATE WARRIORS).i would like to see him do a full album with one producer..(EVIDENCE, DJ KHALIL, MUGGS & THE ALCHEMIST)..anyways this track is definately dope..i also like the diamond d version better

I still have my Soul On Ice single on vinyl. On the B-Side was Marinatin’. One of Ras’ best singles.

Ah Thomas, thought you got my email. The remix was just on the 12 Inch!

I effing love the Diamond D remix.. geez.

Forgive me but…are u fuckin crazy….the soul on ice beats were crazy and everything after that was waaaayyyyy above average. He did not have commercial appeal on beats and the one time he did “Home Sweet Home” alchemist gave that joint to Jada Kiss “We Gon Mkae It” which turned out to be one of the biggest hits of his career. Check Marintain, Miami Life, Anything Goes, Understandable, Interview Wit A Vampire, shit i can keep going. From Soul on Ice all the way to Van Gogh he had plenty of great beats….more than most west coast emcees(95%) at the time. After that yeah he fell off, but his beat choice was fine along with him being a muderous verbalist. Someone please tell me what west coast artists had better beats. The Soul on Ice remix was a Classic

    Isreal…
I’m sorry man lol. Ras Kass has always had a horrible ear for beats. In fact, the knock throughout that entire time period of his albums, was that the production was weak. Why do you think Soul On Ice didn’t do better? It’s a lyrical gem, and no one will doubt that, but I also believe that hardly anyone will contend with the idea that it was greatly lacking any type of solid production. The title cut is the obvious standout.

as for the “Someone please tell me what west coast artist had better beats”…c’mon man.
you serious? I’ll name 4 in one group.. Easy E, MC Ren, Ice Cube, and Dr. Dre… they usually had a pretty solid ear for beats wouldn’t you say?
Not to mention just about everyone that’ll be mentioned in my article tomorrow

  • Isreal

Ha….better beats.Yeah right. The knock during that time was that he was a West Coast Emcee that sound more like a East Coast emcee. As for the people you named obviosuly they had great production as a collective but seperate other than Cube and Dre( who had mel man, battle cat, and jellyroll, doing most of his production) they production was mediocre. Please post Soul on Ice and name me the wack beats.Post Rassasination and tell me the wack beats.Post Van Gogh and tell me the wack beats.

As for an emcee he probaly is the top 2 or 3 in the west.”Nature of the threat”.”Interview wit a Vampire”,”Soul on Ice” “Tv Guide” “Ordo Abchado” “Understandable Smooth” “Van Gogh” “Jack Frost” are classic untouchable lyricism with a pound of knowledge that cant be fucked wit by anyone on the west. Just off pure lyrics(During his prime) he is #1 probably followed by Planet Asia and Crooked I. Stop shittin on Razzy. Other people fit into the west coast mold better .ie Kurupt, Quik, Daz, Brotha Lynch. but no one could fuck wit his lyrical content

  • SOC4L

wow put crooked as your top 3 wit no album ? LOLLL soul on ice production wasnt horrible but no doubt coulda been better especially if you think of all the dope westcoast producers. that said i do lik the beats on miami life, if then, drama, marinatin and i find all listenable, but coulda been better.

“Someone please tell me what west coast artists had better beats”

    Cypress Hill
    Dilated Peoples
    Evidence
    Dr. Dre
    N.W.A
    Ice Cube
    The Game
    DJ Quik
    Snoop Dogg
    The Pharcyde
    Digital Underground

just off the top of my head

  • Isreal

Ok sticking to production..though good….not feelin digital underground production…dilated production has gotten better but was just ok in the beginning. None of these people u list is in Ras Kass lane.Other than Evidence who is a lyrical emcee. The rest of the artists make the more stat quo West Coast sound. Love Quik….Cube though a all time great has had some mediocre production on some albums( why he get a pass)….Snoop other than doggystle and blue carpet treatment production aint been impressive.Pharcyde yeah right…other than what dilla laced them wit…..Muggs is my top 5 producers so i agree wit the cypress point. So consistanly the only person with good production throughout is Quik and Dr Dre…curtsey of ghost production..big up battle cat mell man daz jelly roll..so why yall dick riding soo hard what magazines wrote years ago. His production for the most part wasnt made for the typical west coast cat cus he wasnt the typical west coast spitter…Still i dont see the point..No one consistantly be giving straight fire all they career but the only one who gets excluded is Ras Kass…..lol…very lame fellas
