Pete Rock vs. 20 Keys

Pete Rock vs. 20 Keys

When I first heard the new track from Method Man & Redman (”Ayo”), I thought the sample sounded very familiar. Turns out my man 20 Keys flipped the same sample last year for one of my favorite tracks off Trav WilliamsThe Trickle Down.

So in preparation for the release of Trav’s IllTravis tomorrow, I thought it was appropriate to put these two tracks up against each other. A legend (Pete Rock) against a newcomer (20 Keys). Hit the jump and tell us who you think flipped the sample better.

Phyllis Hyman: “Magic Mona”
From the Fish That Saved Pittsburgh Soundtrack (1979)

Method Man & Redman: “Ayo”
From the album Blackout 2 (2009)
Produced by Pete Rock

Trav Williams: “Something New”
From the album The Trickle Down (2008)
Produced by 20 Keys

Who flipped it better?

I have a track recorded for my new album that flips this sample as well… I think 20 keys flipped it better.

Pete Rock’s version is a bit on the light side I reckon…

The youngster did an impressive job but Pete Rock is the illest.

I liked how 20Keys ’sparkled’ the track, but I like Pete Rock’s version better..

10 Vatkeezy April 12, 2009 at 3:09 pm

20 keys version is nice still but I gotta go with Pete! Shit, I didn’t even know he produced it, thought it Saukrates!

11 Pee duble April 12, 2009 at 3:36 pm

20

I been missing these post Kev, good look on this one. Like Vatkeezy said I didn’t even know Pete Rock produced that record, but I think he flipped it better than 20 Keys.

Really? I love Pete and all, but the sample was basically just a straight loop. The beat is nice yeah, but I think 20 did more with the sample. Listen to the chorus in “Something New”. Real nice.

I gotta say pete flipped it better cause you can hear the thickness in the bassline and the piano…

I like 20’s drum work more but the bassline doesn’t permeate the track like Pete’s does.

Pete’s basically sounds cleaner and more commercial… and I like Pete’s use of the hrons every 4 bars…

But 20 got a bright future… his drums are sick and his chop game is Ginsu!

This is dope. LOVE that yall put up the original sample too. Yall should do this more often…

20 keys got ‘em. shit knocks.

16 Sean Deez April 13, 2009 at 12:45 am

shit, the Trickle Down?
That was the first album I reviewed on the site lol

“Tag Along” was a beat and a half

I can appreciate what 20 did with the chopping of the sample cuz it shows he put more work into make the track, BUT I feel pete’s direction in keepin’ it simple and just making you just bob your head. Sometimes the loop is all you need. Anybody can loop and chop. It’s what you put on top and bottom that’s makes the joint hot. Both joints music wise are hot, but you gotta give it to Red and Meth for adding life to their joint with that dude singing the hook. It’s just all around a better song. POINT BLANK: I found myself boppin my head more to the Pete Rock version. Funny thing is I heard this song for the first time last week and didn’t know Pete Rock did it. This dude is the man and more ppl need to hit that dude up for tracks. But yo 20 Keys (stupid name __ how many producers got keys in their name now) has a future ahead of him so don’t sleep.

Both beats are Great. The edge goes to Pete. The Windchimes in 20’s beat are too much for me. No disrespect. I like both beats.

20 TACH April 13, 2009 at 2:41 pm

No disrespect to 20 Keys… but Pete Rock has this one hands down IMO….

21 malmoe April 13, 2009 at 4:09 pm

once again I say both are dope. Dude 20 put more work in the choppin’ field, but in this case less is more. As a whole song the edge goes to Pete Rock. As far as the creativity of using the sample, it goes to 20. My head bops ferociously more to the Pete Rock version cuz it’s more uptempo. Side note: I love what Pete did with the horns to break the monotny.

22 UNSIGNEDHYPE April 13, 2009 at 4:18 pm

Pete’s my dude, but on this one 20 keys was just great !!

Thanks for the interest and support.

26 JarrJohnson April 13, 2009 at 8:15 pm

I like 20’s version better. I think he picked a better part of the song to sample and chopped up the sample a little better than Chocolate Boy Wonder.

On another note, does anyone know where to get a digital copy of the Fish that Saved Pittsburgh Soundtrack? I’ve been looking for that ‘ish for years….

27 Victor April 14, 2009 at 6:18 am

I have to agree that 20 keys chopped it up better, as Kev mentioned pete’s version was a pretty straight up loop but as a single/banger pete rock’s track wins it for me. Still, two dope songs!

28 Hood687 April 14, 2009 at 4:49 pm

After listening to the 20 Keys joint several times, I still have to say that Pete flipped it better. Dude definitely did more with the sample than Pete did, but Pete’s version just sounds cleaner…

29 pinkCookiz May 2, 2009 at 8:31 pm

BTW his name is 20.…NOT 20keys J Yea, Pete ROCK is a genius in his own rights, NONE taken and he will always be in my top five. 20 however did a better job at flippin it. Yes Rocks sounds “cleaner” but also “simple” when compared to 20’s. Dude (20) is making bangas out of the “basement” kid! So if you think the “young kid” is knockin NOW just wait till he IS working with the million dollar studio like Pete is working with. LOL! 20 is beyond his time and a genius as well! You can hear the skills in all of his productions and he uses the simplest (”weakest”) tools of the trade and HE STILL BANGS THE FUCK OUT! Goes to show it aint (really) what you got, it’s how you work it! KEEP BANGIN BABY!

^^^^
Unless I’m wrong (or he changed his name) I thought it was 20 Keys (http://kevinnottingham.com/2008/08/12/trav-williams-bootlegs-b-sides/) <<< this comes straight from Trav and his peoples (at least I think).

Let me know.

31 Kevin May 2, 2009 at 8:55 pm

LMAO… who is this cat pink cookies… lol. Dude, it’s 20 Keys…. trust me. Glad you recognize his skills though.

32 pinkCookiz May 3, 2009 at 12:54 am

lol Hi Kevin, Sorry to bust ya bubble but it’s “kitten” NOT cat! LMAO! I’m a woman and yea…unless he changed his name back to Keys? Last I knew and str8 from his mouth he dropped the “Keys”. (check his Myspace) BUT like I said he could have changed it agian, I havent spoke to him in about 3months. None the less he’s an incredible producer….BTW ewwwww @ a dude being named “PINKCOOKIZ”!!!!! LMAO WTF!? hahaha
