Trav Williams: IllTravis

Over the course of 10 weeks, producers from all across the globe came together to help create a vision… a vision to recreate a classic; to pay homage to Nas‘ 1994 debut album Illmatic. Trav Williams came to me with this idea in the fall of 2008. I saw this as the perfect opportunity to hold a beat contest on the site and get everyone involved. As one of the five judges, I can say that picking the beats wasn’t easy, but in the end I think we all gave Trav some great material to work with. Trav quickly went into the studio and here you have… IllTravis.

Trav Williams: IllTravis

Preface to IllTravis:

Before anything and above all I got to thank all the winning producers for thier hard work and effort and all the producers that submitted for even trying, you are appreciated. G.C., S.2, DJ Qvali, Tokyo Cigar, JLH, Digivillanous, EvolveAudio & Natown Legend, you are respected.

Now…let me say this; this project ain’t about “blowing up” off Illmatic; this project ain’t about who don’t like it; this project ain’t about controversy; this project, just like all my shit, ain’t about money; this project is something that I been wanting to do since my Illmatic tape popped on the school bus on a hot ass day many Mays ago. Realistically, I got a bucket list and this was on it. So I did it and before I grow up too much I hope to check a few more things off the list.

Needless to say, I hope y’all dig it. But I make music for people that want to hear what I want to hear, so if you don’t dig it, then you ain’t one of them people. But if you dig it, dig it; good look.

-Peace TW

“The Exodus” – “back in the day the tape had to be righteous you had to play that joint all the way through or you would mess up your batteries.” (C) Trav W.

^^^ that’s the truth

13 Psymun April 13, 2009 at 7:24 pm

“how they gonna rap with all them balls in they mouth?” haha i’ve never laughed so hard from a rap song. that made my day.

**“how they gonna rap with all them balls in they mouth?” haha i’ve never laughed so hard from a rap song. that made my day.**

Psymun, to this day that is one of my favorite Trav tracks, and I am glad to have been able to produce it. The depth and commentary he presents on that track is sick.

15 Psymun April 13, 2009 at 10:18 pm

yeah that track really is dope as hell man, expecially the production. you’ve got skills G.C. keep up the good work i’ll be listening.

Weird… I just tried it and it worked fine. Anybody else?

27 Thomas April 15, 2009 at 6:13 pm

grady

28 Keenan April 15, 2009 at 6:13 pm

thomas-glad u feelin zoom, i think that was the first song trav and me ever did

29 Thomas April 15, 2009 at 6:19 pm

Yeah….Keenan that track and lyrics go hand in hand. Track reminds me of “Stroke of Death” off of Supreme Clientele a little. Nevertheless its hot.

30 Kevin April 15, 2009 at 7:32 pm

WTF is this dude Grady talkin bout? lol

31 J Fizz April 15, 2009 at 10:23 pm

Lifes the shit is my favorite, 2nd place would be dedicated, 3rd is quarterlife crisis peace….

album is overall very dope but damm travs voice woulda blended on one of my beats sooo clean

32 Sean Deez April 15, 2009 at 10:28 pm

grady’s right

33 grady April 16, 2009 at 12:15 am

oh man there was one compilation of eminem that was out of synch, then there was on english guy whose flow was really really bad (it made the beats cry for help)..man there s been a few actually..i can trully in a while i taught was neat. i remember listening back then and thinking .”that s why they call it undergroung .cause i m not coming out of the bassement with those songs on my pod”. i m no hater…u guys had me turned off from listening to free music for a while…nohate, just fact..i might be back now..we need the doc on these chops

34 grady April 16, 2009 at 12:24 am

i almost forgot the one mixture of nas illmatic and micheal jackson thriller..thrillmatic..i remember that nigga..i didn t visit this site for like a month after listening to that thing..nice try though..no hate, just fact

35 Pee Duble April 16, 2009 at 6:29 am

LOL, ya’ll crazy!!

36 Kevin April 16, 2009 at 4:59 pm

*bump* we gonna keep this one on top!

A documentary though? hmmm… that might have been easier if we chronicled the process at the time. Maybe we can do something though.

37 J Fizz April 16, 2009 at 6:12 pm

what happened to the beat by natown legend that was kinda like crunk version of ny state of mind? its not on the mixtape.

38 esejota April 16, 2009 at 6:48 pm

Dont know what happened yesterday, but it worked fine now, downloading it…

39 Kevin April 16, 2009 at 8:22 pm

Natown Legend, for some reason, was not available when Trav contacted him to make changes to his beat. The original beat did not fit Trav’s verses and the overall theme of the album when it came down to it. Since Natown did not answer Trav’s emails, Trav went to the runner up which was G.C.

40 grady April 18, 2009 at 3:16 am

the drums on ‘nobody knows me’ is real crips..
‘clockwork’ has great potential but that bassline needs some work son..
victory lap could be the next ‘heart of the city’ with some extra work..
who the fuck chopped nysom..son that is some very demented stuff..
except from the hook part it (gets a bit too much for the spitter to handle at that part..
the bass and drum on ‘bootleg cable’ could be better equed but the track is promising..
haven t quite figured out the what s wrong with the other tracks yet.
overall somewhat impressif
just when i was about to give up on good music..maybe there is hope out there
(btw that other illmatic on whatever other site is not quite up to parr)
Now let s talk documentary

41 Matt April 21, 2009 at 1:50 am

I finally got to listen to this today, and I still stand by my previous statements. This was aight, maybe like high D low C range for me. Nothing spectacular, but it was ok. I didn’t listen to the bonus cuts just the first 10 tracks. I’m going to listen to it once more for a more in depth review, but as of now its about a 68-72 on the KN scale.

42 Skidmatik April 21, 2009 at 11:02 pm

THIS ALBUM IS OFFICIAL LIKE THAT…SHAME ON YOU IF YOU NOT BUMPING THIS ALBUM.

43 B Rodriguez July 9, 2009 at 11:30 pm
