Asher Roth: Asleep In The Bread Aisle

Whether it was being helmed as one of the Top 10 Freshmen for 2009 by XXL or The Greenhouse Effect mixtape, Asher was having a tough time fighting off the “Wannabe Eminem” label. I mean, sure, he’s white, and he’s a rapper, so why not right? Well, like Eminem, he’s very skillful and he’s got a bit of an edge on most emcees: he’s dope. With his first release on Universal Motown, Asher Roth‘s Asleep in the Bread Aisle may have a title that defines the album a little too accurately: a rapper with a grocery store of selection, yet, settles with the most convenient lane. Even with that said, the potential of this emcee couldn’t be clearer, but there are plenty of elements in AITBA that will frustrate, bore, and impress the listener all at once.

The first single, “I Love College,” couldn’t be more distant from the rest of this album. Despite it being a song to ménage college kids everywhere, it evidently sticks out as the “single song.” The second single, “Lark on my Go-Kart,” packs a bigger and better punch as it jams hard hitting drums with so-what lyrics loaded with Saved by the Bell references and clever pop culture wordplay like “Get a Wii Fit to practice your frees with” and “Razor Ramon flow, oh so sharp,” amongst others.

“Blunt Crusin’” shows how appropriate the date of 4-20 is for the album’s release and is sure to appeal to fans of that nature. Unfortunately, “She Don’t Wanna Man” (featuring Keri Hilson) is another out-of-place joint and is horribly force-fed. “Bad Day,” which features the always annoying Jazzy Pha, has potential but never really sets off. This is how a majority of the album works; it’s always almost there.

“Fallin’” and “His Dream” are more than capable of fulfilling even the most hateful critic. When Asher is this sincere, retrospective, and in depth, is when he gets the most out of his skill. Then again, he doesn’t need to mellow out to be tremendous; he shows on “La Di Da” that he can set off emotionally charged emotions on an equally emotion beat by Don Cannon. On “As I Em,” Asher addresses the “elephant in the room,” and he does it so pleasantly, so convincingly, and so profoundly that one cannot help but feel his pain of this burden he’ll most likely carry for the rest of his career. These four joints alone show why Asher Roth is not your average rapper.

He hits a healthy medium with “Sour Patch Kids” and “Be By Myself,” combining elements of his obvious commercial appeal and his undeniable unique talent as an emcee that true hip hop fans understand. Newcomer Orel Yoel satisfies this album’s production needs and never really falls short, but stays content with the situation and plays everything safe, which is fine. Nevertheless, it’s this juggle of sell-ability and skill display throughout the LP that sets this 12 track project back a few steps for Asher, when he clearly could’ve soared beyond expectations with more of a particular focus.

The onus really lies on Asher’s shoulders, but he never really hits a consistency or stride in terms of his ultimate talent. Because his voice is heavily un-engaging and monotone, he has to depend on his subject matter and his passionate emotion to carry him. He has plenty of emotion and evidently has great material to discuss, but AITBA never attempts to exploit his brilliance, but more or less exploits his commercial commodity.

73/100

i’m really torn whether to get this now, think i will, but the review pulled me away then listening to the standout tracks im intrigued!

why does it seem Jazzy Pha destroys any album he touches?

  • http://musicalessence.wordpress.com andrew

it seemed really that this was a negative review…and then it got a 73/100, which is not bad in the least bit.
unmatched potential is repeated frequently, but a 73 seems high for unreached greatness.
that being said, i like “lark on my go kart”, “college” is just okay….and that’s all i’ve heard.
i might be checking this one out.

  • http://kevinnottingham.com Kevin

This is a great debut album from Asher! Lots of potential here. I highly recommend picking this one up!

  • Victor

I’ll give it a listen, but his voice i really cant shake the similarity to EM’s, despite the fact he is a very different artist.

  • J. Rizzle

Good Review Deez ..73 is good it’s like a C..but I will still check it out.

  • http://kevinnottingham.com Kevin

You guys gotta understand Deez’s scoring system. He’ll probably correct me, but this is how I see his scores…

    90-100 = Classic status
    80-90 = Worth buying
70-80 = Not too bad, has some flaws, but worth checking out
60-70 = Buy at your own risk
under 60 = forget about it

  • http://www.baleedat.blogspot.com Toast

    La Di Da >

  • J. Rizzle

Thanx Kev….Yeah , I feel his scoring system, it’s on point to me I picked right up on it and I’m feeling it.

  • http://kevinnottingham.com Sean Deez

Yeah Kev, you’re just about right. the way I understand it is that any 80-100, are all A’s where as 90-100 is A+

a 73 would be a B. I wouldn’t suggest copping this, only because I don’t think it’s worth the cop because out of 12 tracks, maybe half of them are dopeness.

If you were to cop it, major props, but for me to get people to spend their hard earned money, rarely would I suggest buying anything below an 80. However, you can be able to say you picked up Asher’s major label debut, but as you’ll see soon, there’s an MC outta Detroit, I think, much worthy of your top dollar

  • Torrance East

    K-Os – Yes!>>>This

  • http://kevinnottingham.com Kevin

I’m coppin it simply cuz Asher shouted me out in the linear notes! lol

  • Cooper

I like Sean’s scoring…he has a point…I gotta about 500 dollars I’m a spend on music this year…I got 440 left (that’s 22 more albums…) Is Asher’s one of them, or do I need to get my download on?

Sean’s 73 has me looking for a rapidshare link.

  • Thomas

Asher shouts my man Kevin out in the linear notes! So this is a must buy!

  • http://undergroundhiphopnation.blogspot.com Dilla Donuts

This album is not good. Why don’t white rappers like Scanz get any recognition or spotlight? Scanz smashes Asher lyrically on both his albums, yet still nobody talks about him being the dope upcoming white emcee. It’s cool tho, y’all keep dickriding and I’ll be saving my ears from sure damage by not listening to this album.

    Happy 4/20.

  • Thomas

Who is Scanz if you don’t mind me asking? You seem extremely angry about something Mr. Dilla Donuts.

Its not happy 4/20 for me because I don’t use illegal substances and we have a random drug testing policy at my place of employment!

  • http://kevinnottingham.com Kevin

Dick riding? Who’s dick riding? dick riding would be giving this album an exceptional review score. Dick riding would be mentioning Asher in every single post we write or posting every single video/interview he’s released. All of which we have not done. We support Asher and his music, but we’re certainly not dick riding.

and who the fuck in Scanz?

  • http://www.myspace.com/psymunsays Psymun

heyyy i actually like those tracks you posted.

  • http://kevinnottingham.com Sean Deez

the fact that he’s white shouldn’t have anything to do with an emcee.. get real.

  • John Cauner

Did you cats hear the bonus cut off the U.K. version-Y.O.U. with Slick Rick? Good track.

  • http://undergroundhiphopnation.blogspot.com Dilla Donuts

My bad, I didn’t mean to direct that comment at Kevin or any other contributors to this site. I’m just sick of every single blog going nuts over Asher Roth because he’s white and is somehow changing the game because of that. It’s ludicrous in the first place to even say that race should play any role in how dope an emcee is, but I’m just saying it seems like dude’s are thinking he’s the illest white emcee since Marshall Mathers, but that’s so far from the truth.

Really tho, step your game up if you don’t know who Scanz is. Y’all never heard of Rawkus 50?

  • grady

son still gotta pay his dues for a nigga to even consider downloading it..(i ll still peep it on youtube)
too many niggaz rapping these day..what makes u special..how many years have u been grinding on the low..i mean em was really grinding on the low..so was jay (jaz o), big (heavy d), pac(humpty hump)..even jd (whodini) and lil wayne (dope boys)…and even worst this is a recession nigga..there is no way he s going plat, the label should have spent more time building his rep instead of selling him as a baby em..cause em actually has acheived respect from his delivery and rhyme scheme

  • http://kevinnottingham.com Kevin

Yo Deez, I think this is your most popular review EVER! lol I guess this is why people “dick ride” Asher…. cuz people are checkin him out.

  • eA

He has a track with Slick Rick??? What??

Goodness, this man is like .. love or hate. No inbetweens… we’ll see what happens when I have a chance to listen to it.

  • Arasia

I will have to check this one out. Great review Sean!!!

  • http://kevinnottingham.com Kevin

Check the new post for the track with Slick Rick.

  • http://kevinnottingham.com Sean Deez

Nah Kev, I don’t think this one is my most popular one. My ATLiens review was pretty popular, the Nas one still gets posts lol
Wait until I review the new jay-z album, all hell will break loose

  • 80′ Baby

I think you should wait at least a couple weeks before reviewing albums. I have albums that grew on me after a while and became my favorite albums. Even after my initial reaction was meh.

I think you do the artist and the fans of your site a disservice by reviewing an album a couple days after listening to it.

just my opinion. i will give this a listen tho.

  • http://kevinnottingham.com Sean Deez

Well, this album was listened to over a span of what… 4 days?
I have it on my laptop, my mp3 player and in my car… so I’ve easily listened to this album 12-15 times, including one all nighter.

After reviewing as many albums as I’ve had, its possible to say that I’ve got a niche for understanding what will grow on me and what won’t. Granted, if I expect it to grow, then I mention it in the review.

Besides, buyers want to buy right away and generally check the spots before buying, while I do agree with your notion 80′s… its a hard shift to make.

Someone actually suggested to me the other day that we just wait about a year or so to review, because then the important test of time (a factor I’m always very supportive of) comes into play. If that shift was made, it would be great… but right now, people are only wanting whats NOW

  • Thomas

Did I mention that my FRIEND Kevin Nottingham received a shout out in the linear notes of this album? I don’t think that I did.

  • http://kevinnottingham.com Kevin

    lol, you’re funny Thomas… lol.

I want to address 80′s Baby though. I totally hear what you’re saying. There are plenty of albums that I have hated when I first heard it only to love it months/years later. The problem is we life in a society of here and now. For this site to stay successful, we have to put reviews out as soon as the album comes out, if not earlier. I mean, look how many people have been looking for this review today. I guarantee that if we were to put out this review a month from now it would not get the same amount of views or comments. To test that theory, we will be posting a review of Big Pooh’s new album later this week. That album came out about a month ago. I bet it won’t get as much attention as this review did today.

On a similar note, we do not review albums based off of one listen. That would be stupid. Every review submitted on this site has been in our possession at least a week, sometimes a month in advance of the release date (one of the perks of doing promo work :D ).

So anyway, I feel ya 80′s Baby, but I had to throw my 2 cents in.

  • http://www.famelessfam.com Danny J

If you didn’t like the Roth mixtape shit, would you like the album at all? Any progress?

  • http://kevinnottingham.com Sean Deez

im generally not that big of a fan of mixtapes in general, so its hard for me to judge that…

  • http://kevinnottingham.com Kevin

Yeah, this simple does not compare to his mixtape.

  • Jason

being my last yr of uni…i love college is my anthem of 09
fallin and his dream really make this album stand out from the crowd

was skeptical when i first heard him…but consider me an asher man now

  • 80′ Baby

thanks for your perspective kevin and deez…it’s good to know you guys have put thought into your review process (unlike other sites) keep up the good work

  • http://kevinnottingham.com Sean Deez

    yeah, it’s sincerely not just a number to me, there’s a reason why a 72 differs from a 73.

but yeah yo.. it’s not easy thang

  • 80′ Baby

oh yeah. you guys are REALLY big now! Bol is talking about kevin in his blog. And he only talks about the best.

    http://www.xxlmag.com/online/?p=44143

  • Victor

Hey Deez would you ever consider like a reflection-review sort of thing, where you go back and provide a second opinion on a big release?

  • http://kevinnottingham.com Sean Deez

lol are we an “obscure hip hop blogger”

    ?

  • http://kevinnottingham.com Sean Deez

Victor, are you referring to re-reviewing an album I’ve done?

I considered that last year, because I felt like I gave both the Black Milk and the Elzhi albums a short end of the stick when I first reviewed them. They both ended up being top 3 of my 2008 best album’s list.

It’s possible. I think people need to realize that writers in general have very firm and stubborn opinions. So if we gave a 70, when it probably deserved a 75, one way or another, most (not all) will find ways to justify the 70, like many lawyers do try to prove their client innocent when they know they are guilty.

It’s this cross we carry because to hone up and admit to a mistake or a slip up is tough. However, the best way to fix a mistake is not to make them. And at KevinNottingham.com we go through a series of steps that involve re-reads, hiring process, re-reads again, and criticisms that allow for that mistake to be caught. I think a re-review process for this site, would just be an echo of the already written piece.

  • http://www.soundclick.com/danimalhiphopbeats Danimal

the 3 tracks you posted are pretty dope ! i might get it off those tracks..and lark on my go kart is good too…im not sure tho .. and 73 aint that good to me …lol that was 4 points away from failing in my old high school lol

  • Victor

Yeah Deez i mean more of a second opinion sidebar sort of thing and if an album is particularly landmark or is one of great discussion then a more full re-analysis could be an option.

It is true though about the mistakes, i would say you could go more for reflection rather than re-assessment. I dunno how it could work, maybe you could make it a mad rare ocurrence?

And yeah i cant remember what you gave Elzhi’s album but it was defo my favourite album last year hands down. I’m only 19 myself and very few modern releases have made me drop my jaw as often (fishscale, food and liquor and below the heavens come to mind) as his release. Guessing Game is such an ill concept track.

  • http://kevinnottingham.com Thomas

Read the review over at Hiphopdx. It was a harsh review…yes, but he made good points.

  • http://youtube.com/BlackHayzeDVD Black Hayze DVD

Great review Sean. I don’t relate to Asher’s music. I liked the college joint, I didn’t enroll in college, but I went to some crazy parties (back in the day) at Cortland and stayed blazed up in the dorms. Out the 3 joints up there I WOULD play “fallin”. No doubt the kid is talented, but I can’t really relate to his music.

  • Pee Duble

I bought the album, maybe the first one I spent money on this year. I’m still kinda pissed at the review that Deez gave “The Trickle Down” but Deez is really accurate on this one. In Asher’s case I think Deez went easy. I read the Dx review before I bought the album, just to see if it was really that bad. I think it was. There are definitely some gems on there, but this one might collect a little dust while I give some other albums a thoro listen. I might like it in a couple of months, you never know. I didn’t realize how classic “The Moment of Truth” was until a year later when I was hearing the garbage that was coming out. Holla

  • http://www.myspace.com/ShaFunnyXL ShaFunnyXL

@BlackHayze lol funny i find u on here too for a discussion lol. but i agree, i can barely relate to this shit, i mean whod a thought the difference b/w 26 yrs old (me) and 22 (asher) makes as far as life and relating shit. Did all the college parties already.

the production seems like it coulda been better. if they was goin for that live instrument sounds sampled vibe they shoulda took a cue from Mark Ronson. This production is like Sean said “safe” I feel like that too. no chances taken at all.

Asher seems more non scared makin some nice written/put together lyrics with hooks ill admit.

  • http://kevinnottingham.com Thomas

Also forgot this came out this year. Have to give it a listen to see how it holds up 5 months later.

  • http://www.kevinnottingham.com Deez

Lark on My Go Kart and La Di Da still get heavy spins
