Godamus Rhyme

Godamus Rhyme is an MC/producer originally from Prince George’s County, MD. He has been heard nationally on college radio and toured as part of the group Caveman Theory. Their debut album, The Stone Quartet, climbed into the top 10 of the CMJ hip hop charts during the summer of 2007. As a solo act, he continued to make waves in 2008 when he was selected by the Snowgoons to feature on their next album for Babygrande Records. He was also chosen by indie powerhouse Rhymesayers as a finalist in their competition for a single deal with producer Jake One in November. Earlier today, he dropped his mixtape The Adventures of Rhyme and Sense [download], featuring beats by 6th Sense. He is currently hard at work on his debut album, Sing My Dreams. Hit the jump to get to know Godamus Rhyme…

Where you reppin?

The DMV (DC/MD/VA) and Ozone (Orlando)

Introduce yourself:

godamus2Godamus Rhyme the Cocky Bastard. Emcee, vocalist, producer, engineer. Affiliated with the Gully Bears, Avie Squad, Locksmiff Entertainment, and Masterworks Unlimited.

Current projects we should be looking out for:

6th Sense vs. Godamus Rhyme: The Adventures of Rhyme & Sense out now. After that I’ll be dropping an EP called Classically Trained with Philaflava.com & The T.R.O.Y. Blog in late June/Early July.

SteadyBloggin.com also just dropped a compilation called Our Rappers Are Better Than Yours that I’m featured on. It also has tracks from Atmosphere, Mac Lethal, Blueprint, and CunninLynguists on it.

Previous work that we should know about:

Caveman Theory – The Stone Quartet LP.

That’s the group I used to be in. We dropped the album in 2007. It reached top 10 on the CMJ HipHop charts that summer. Right up there with cats like DOOM and Sage Francis. “Funk Box” was the most popular song. I produced that as well as about 50% of the record. You can find the album on Bit Torrent. It was heavily bootlegged.

I work alot wit Philly emcee iCON the Mic King. I had beats and a feature on his Intricate Spectrum EP and Rent Money Music 2 mixtape.

I’ve also been on compilations released in the US, Canada, France, & Japan.

Main musical inspirations:

godamus3As an emcee, I’d say my biggest influences have been Rakim, Boot Camp Clik, Common, old school Xzibit, Busta Rhymes, Wu Tang, and Big Pun. When I was younger they had some of the dopest styles to me. More recent dudes like Elzhi, Royce, Brother Ali & Joe Budden keep me trying to progress lyrically.

As a producer, cats like Dr. Dre, Primo, Kno of CunninLynguists, 88 Keys, and Kanye have had a big effect on me. I also really like Nottz & Black Milk. But anyone who’s got hot shit I learn from. I’m open to anything as long as it’s good.

If you had to pick one song that defines your career to date, what song would that be?

“Easy As It Seems” off the Caveman Theory record. My verse on there pretty much explains my adult life & career.

Why should the readers and fans give you a shot and listen to your music from here on out?

Unlike what some of my peers like to claim, I’m a emcee. Not a hustler, not a fashion icon, not an alien… I’m a fucking EMCEE! I rap. I love hip-hop and I’m fucking great at it. I sing on tracks, but that’s just me having fun and adding diversity to my sound. I gave up trying to be Usher a long time ago.

I also remember that it’s 2009. I’m not trying to bring back shit from the 80′s or mid ninties. Those eras were great. It’s what I grew up on, but it’s the past. Heads need to make new shit and stop taking themselves so serious. This is music.

What’s next for you?

Trying to record as much music as possible and hit the road hard. Promoters get at me!

Classically Trained drops in June/July. My next mixtape, Cocky Bastard 2 will drop before the end of the year. I might drop my debut album, Sing My Dreams, but we’ll see. It all depends on the timing and demand.

If you could only take one record on a deserted island with you, what album would that be?

Any of the discs out of the Hidden Beach Recordings’ Unwrapped series. It’s technically jazz, but the production is great and they remade alot of incredible hip-hop beats. Heads should check those out if they don’t know about it.

Any shout outs or last words?

Shouts to all my people: Jon Connor, iCON, Awar, Avie Squad, Locksmiff Ent… Everybody I rap with makes quality shit that puts the focus back where it belongs: Dope music. Dope shows. Not image.

Make sure to download the new mixtape. You’ll get to see who I am as an artist and what I’m capable of. Hit up my video site at www.BirdTV.net to catch all my video shit. And follow me on twitter.com/godamusrhyme. You’ll definitely get the latest updates on there. I’ll also leak exclusives from time to time.

Last but not least… Don’t sleep on cats from the DMV or Ozone. Y’all are about to see alot of heat come out of both regions.
