H.I.S.D. (Hueston Independent Spit District) was born in 2005 through the collaboration of eight artists of varying mediums wanting to introduce a refreshing perspective to the sound and visual aesthetic of hip hop culture, classic soul music, poetry, visual art, fashion, and photography.

Mutual respect and appreciation for the cultural significance and influence achieved by creatively bridging these art forms, brought Savvi (hip hop artist/entrepreneur), Equality (poet/writer/emcee/architect/visual artist), LdaVoice (emcee), Scottie Spitten aka Lenoge(emcee), plus GoldenSoulClassics which consist of producers, King Midas, Soul One (DJ/radio personality), E-Classic, and Jason “Flash Gordon Parks” Woods (photographer/DJ), together to form H.I.S.D. Get to know them after the cut…

Where You Reppin:

Eclassic: We rep all of H-Town period. Me specifically, Nawf Side, Studewood. LOL

Introduce Yourself:

You got MC’s Ldavoice, Scottie Spitten, Savvi, Equality, DJ/Documentarian Flash Gordon Parks, and Producers King Midas, Eclassic, and Producer/DJ Soulone,

Current projects we should be looking out for:

Equality: King Coz which is DJ Cosmoz and producer King Midas, Spitten King which is King Midas and MC Scottie Spitten both from HISD, Michelle Thibeaux and Krystal Hardwick who are singers on our label, Peace Uv Mine, www.peaceuvmine.com, HISD is working on a new album due out this year as well as Blak Embassy which is MC EQuality and MC Savvi from HISD also a slew of other progressive Hip-Hop soul artist in Hueston right now such as HISD-1Caretta Bell’s album Love’s eye View, Legendary K.O., Kay of the Foundation, The Niyat, D-Rose album Tasters Choice, a band called Neon Collars has an EP called Chasing Strange its a lot talent in Hueston that people should be lookin out for.

Previous work that we should know about:

HISD “The District” and Summer Sessions

Main musical inspirations:

S. Spitten: Main musical inspirations: As far as hip hop artist go, I would have to say Rakim as a youngin’, and as I started growing up Tribe and De La became my favorite group, but Keith Murray and Redman were the one’s who made me want to start writing for real. Lyrically those two cats were right up my alley. To be honest I’m inspired by anybody making good music. Now, MF Doom probably inspires me more than any artist right now. Pharoh Monch too. You talk about cats who lyrically are on another level. LOL

If you had to pick one song that defines your career to date, what song would that be?

SoulOne: “Sir Duke” – Stevie Wonder_dsc00092

Why should the readers and fans give you a shot and listen to your music from here on out?

Ldavoice:  We offer a fresh take on the stuff that you grew up on. If you’re like us and are fans of the whole “Native Tongues” movement and all that it spawned, Fresh beats, creative rhymes, something you don’t feel ashamed to let ya moms hear, then you’ll love what’s coming from HISD. We add a fresh blend to something that you’re familiar with.

What’s next for you?

Savvi: Well, We got a new Album in the works slated to drop in the fall. Hopefully a tour to go along with the album.

Desert Island Hip Hop: If you could only take one record on a deserted island with you, what album would that be?

King Midas: Marvin Gaye “I want you” or A Tribe Called Quest “Midnight Marauders” Don’t make me choose.

Flash GP: It would be Outkast “Aquemini”..not because it’s my favorite Hip Hop album but it’s one of the most sonically well put together albums out. I think the balance of it would serve me well in this Gilligan like scenario…

Any shout outs or last words?

District: Peace to God, all of the pioneers who put it down b4 us, all our Houston Fam, those who’ve held HISD down from day one, all the new fans, Rappersiknow.com, Wax Poetics, Okayplayer.com, and you for the great Interview. They alright. I think they sound too much like Little Brother. Just another group trying to put their spin, but when are artists going to start really getting creative, NEVER!!!
Its all been done before.

I think I said this in another post, but “Summer Sessions” and the “The District” came to us for a music submission for the inbox and possible review. I just happened to put up the inbox (http://kevinnottingham.com/2009/04/05/the-inbox-week-ending-4509/#more-9367) that day and stumbled upon this. I think someone said they were aight in the comments…..so I decided to check them out. After downloading both albums I was blown away by the lyricism and production.

I Hit Kev almost immediately to see if we should explore getting them up on the site and reviewing one of the albums. Within a day or so we made contact with H.I.S.D. managment/PR people and the ball started to roll. Arasia signed on to review Summer Seesion and we’re here with a spotlight and review.

When I did some research on them (aka google) a few days later I found this video (http://kevinnottingham.com/2009/04/11/hisd-only-a-fool/) and they’ve been around a while and I was late. Apparently, ?uestlove and others in the know knew about them. *grabs late pass.”

Anyhoo….can’t wait for new material from them.

Some feedback from the artist. What can we to make the “Get to Know” questions/interview a little better? Should we add more questions, give better directions, etc.

We need feedback….always trying to improve.
