Are We A Top 50 Hip Hop Blog?

by Sean Deez on May 20, 2009 · 38 comments

This came to my attention last week. Thomas, Kevin, and myself read it and we kinda scoffed… it really didn’t matter. After all, we all saw the “Vibe Best Rapper” Competition [view here]. Obviously, Joe Budden wasn’t impressed. After sitting back and thinking about it… I’m gonna have to go Joe Budden on this list myself, regardless of the repercussions. I mean, the logical answer would be that “no one knows about KevinNottingham.com,” but be real here, we get about 12,000-15,000 hits a day, plenty of new viewers each day… worldwide. Byron Crawford, who is a hugely amusing blogger (albeit, he hates just about everything, but eh, he’s good at what he does) knows about us, YN of Rap Radar knows about us, countless emcees and producers know about us, so why not? In retrospect, I just didn’t understand why we aren’t one of the better 50 blogs out there, and I have plenty of reasons to think why we should be on there. In case you didn’t see the list… here it is.

Ugh. I mean, I’m not gonna name names throughout this, so don’t expect that from me. I know a few of these blog runners and after being involved with blogging for the last 18 months or so, I have nothing but respect for each and every blog runner and contributor, it’s a hard job and frankly, there isn’t loads of money involved with it. 99% of what’s done on a blog is for the love of hip hop and for the fans of it despite the hate a writer, a poster, or even a fellow commenter may get. Another thing I wanted to get outta the way…what the fuck is up with Vibe these days? I mean, has EVERY Urban magazine lost credibility? I mean, if we were on the list, I’d still be saying this (if not about the blogs, then about the best rapper thing), but I mean, why on earth are they so damn bias and BET’ed? It’s upsetting. It’s not one writer doing it (most likely), it’s a team of writers. So you gotta think, not one person is messing up, a whole bunch of people are messing up. I mean, I love hip hop writers, as one myself, I understand the pain and struggle, but my God, I feel like the genre is in such upsetting and irresponsible hands when the head-uppers are either allowing all of this and contributing to it. Who the HELL puts Plies on a Best Rapper ever list? So with that out of the way, let me rant a little bit on this topic right here.

And let’s be serious… it’s impossible for there to be no backlash on this topic with Vibe, so that’s kind of impossible. But, whatever, I’ve already said their name like 5 times throughout the first 3 paragraphs, so they are doing their job, aren’t they?

We Do What No Other Site Dared to Do…

Isn’t our hip hop sample sets like that one special thing that sets us apart from everyone else though? I feel that they are kind of the powerful force that drives us at times. They get loads of hits, they start controversy, but more important, they expose people to great music that they probably would’ve never heard, and on top of that, expose something NEW. Even if that’s not it, what about our Reviews? As Head writer and Asst. Editor in Chief of the site, I make sure that every written piece put on this site is above the caliber that it would be sufficient for on any other site. We go beyond the normal, giving highly in depth and intensive reviews, giving analysis, shit, we even give you three tracks to listen to most of the time. We care about our viewers and make sure people spend their $ wisely. That should count for something. ALSO, we expose NEW artist, artists other sites wouldn’t care to “waste space” on. Even heard of Theo 3? You probably caught his most recent “50 Bars” thing on other sites; we featured him at least twice before any of that. Melanie Fiona? Pssssh, we had her ish here first before any blogs decided to hop on the bandwagon. Wax & EOM? We had the “Larry and Tina” video 5 months before other sites decided to give a damn. I really could care less about “getting stuff first,” but it’s not even about that, it’s just frustrating, because a lot of other sites are jumping on what’s hot, and we already know it is gonna be fire before it even hits the freaking shelves, but no one will listen to the little guy.

50% of these Blogs do the same thing…

If these sites aren’t about Gossip, then they are about leaks. Who’s got it first?! I’ve studied early media history, and one of the most talked about things then (and even now) was “who got it first?” Some sites build their popularity because they get a song 5 minutes before someone else does? Are you kidding me? In Toronto, we have three major Sport Network shows, during the NHL Trade Deadline, it’s ALL about who gets it first, and it’s hilarious. I’m gonna find out from somebody in the next 5 minutes aren’t I? Does it matter who? Regardless if it’s the new-ish for the 5-minute late-ish, aren’t you gonna hear the tracks? Why do blogs get so many daps for being first? Looking like HHDX.com commenters…. And it’s hilarious, watching that battle. All that time spending, waiting on who gets it first could’ve been spent writing an in depth piece on the new Eminem album…instead of leaking 5 tracks for everyone to download. Yeah, that’s good for hip hop. For the record, we stream and if we don’t stream, it’s because we’ve been given permission by the PR or whomever to post liberally. But yeah, being in the blog game, you kinda get sucked into it, “being first.” It’s like a disease; so I guess this point can be taken in a few ways. But I mean, some of the listed blogs, just post consistent links…yeah? That’s what it takes? While 50% of these blogs do the same thing, we are in the 3% that do what we do, whether it’s sample sets, or an in depth year end list, or a week dedication… seriously, where else are you gonna get that?

Our Site IS the Culture

The site design gets better every update. Kev does an outstanding job and truly deserves just about all the credit for that. There isn’t much to say about this because the visuals speak for themselves. The site screams hip hop, but more so, we’ve developed into a wide array of elements surrounding the culture of hip hop. We’ve expanded to R&B and even portions of Rock and Reggae. The site screams hip hop at its purist and finest form. For a “Top 50 Hip Hop Blogs” list to include a site that is so essentially ALL about the culture, it’s kind of upsetting to not be included, especially since we just don’t post up Youtube videos and Zshare links to be all about the culture… we show it in our staff, our affiliations, our acknowledgements, our work, and our commitment to our readers and aspiring musicians/artists.

Contests!

And what about our Contest?! Sure, we aren’t world wide yet. Toronto gets lucky every now and then, NYC, and Seattle have some dope opportunities to win. If it’s not about giving up free tickets to some of the biggest shows, including Drake show in Toronto the last week (with a ticket price of over $40 and a strict ticket-giving-away policy), winning free gear, or winning vinyl, KevinNottingham.com hooks our viewers up whenever we can, and frankly we love it. But damn, if that’s not it, what about the producer contests?! The Illtravis project is something that could be added to the resume, so could this current Blueprint contest. The Classified contest sparked some outstanding beats and this recent JD Era contest is another one that only got more heads turning in some heat. I mean, as someone closely affiliated with another who got their start winning a few contest, I know the importance of these things… they could literally change lives. Surely, that should count for something.

Our Viewers/ Posters / Fans

I’ve been on a LOT of hip hop sites in my time around the net, never have I seen such concerned, intrigued, and devoted readers who actually care about the site, the music, and the product being published. Sometimes when I read other sites, I feel like the people could care less about a) what other posters have said, b) what the actual topic is about, and c) what the poster said prior to the post. On KevinNottingham.com, it’s not like that, for the most part anyways. Some GREAT discussions have gone down; see the ATLiens review, the Untitled review, the Top 25 Dr. Dre Productions post, the Drake article. I mean, I could go on. If you find a really dope topic in here, the discussion is 50 comments of bitching… it’s usually 50 comments of true in depth discussion, similar to that of a message board. It’s a real homey feel, very comfortable, and loving. Holy shit, that’s hard to find in the hip hop community these days, isn’t it? Love? Yeah, but you wouldn’t want something like LOVE reigning in on the Top 50 Blogs now would you? Perhaps we are too nice? Kev, should stop being such a philanthropist.

I could go on, I really can. I have loads of school work to do, but this has been eating me up for about a week now. I’d love for others to TRULY read this and comment. What other reasons do you think we should be put on? Should we NOT be put on? Isn’t it great for hip hop to notice us, though? I mean, if we made that list, think about all the extra hits we’d get. Then, think about all the people who could actually tell you what the original Bobby Bland sample was for the all too similar Kanye produced Jigga track. Isn’t that a much better discussion then “Yo, Kanye murked that beat”? I feel that putting us on the list and giving us recognition around the hip hop society is only a positive thing for hip hop, considering the masses that we could educate, evolve, teach, and breed. It would be a beautiful thing, but, this is not a perfect world.

*I haven’t even proof read this, so excuse any grammatical errors or slip ups. It was a type-on-the-mind thing*

I didn’t lose any sleep over this list when I saw it. Personally, I could care less. But you list some valid points Deez. We’ve gotten our props in the past and we’ll continue to move on. But please, feel free to vent on! I’m just glad you didn’t call anyone out a la Joe Budden… lol.

2 Ivan May 20, 2009 at 4:05 pm

“Isn’t our hip hop sample sets like that one special thing that sets us apart from everyone else though?”

Sean: Not to toot my own horn here (pause), but HHIR started that ;)

Regardless, you guys definitely deserved to be on the list.

3 Marcha May 20, 2009 at 4:32 pm

HHIR must have started it, but this blog take it to another level. And you know your site is doing well when Madlib really cares about you, hahaha.
Congrats everyone, like Ivan said, you guys deserve to enter every decent “best hip-hop website” list.

4 Ben May 20, 2009 at 4:34 pm

This blog is hands down the reason I started “blogging” myself. You guys give information, I check quite a few blogs regularly but no other blog tells me anything. I hear rumors and leaks on other sites but you guys clearly like hip hop. In order to leak a song, no one has to enjoy hip hop (although I am sure that the other bloggers do) just saying that their blogging does not reflect their respect and admiration of hip hop. You cant bull shit the lists and posts you guys do and that is why i check this cite multiple times ad ay. I am constantly trying to learn and I can’t do it anywhere but here. Keep it up, but i wouldn’t trip off the VIbe list, unless you wanna battle Method Man…

5 Smoove May 20, 2009 at 4:41 pm

This blog kills for 2 reasons.

1. Samples Sets
2. DJ Unexpected’s ‘Look What I Found’ series. Couldn’t find em anywhere else.

Not only that, but you guys always show love to locals doing real hip hop shows in other cities and give the average joe DJ chance to shine, because the music is right, not because the name is popular.

Mad respect to Kevin, Sean and the team. Don’t even sweat Vibe.

you touched on it in this piece, and i have to agree: what IS up with VIBE these days? whatever it is, it ain’t hitting on nothing. VIBE isn’t even a top FIVE magazine anymore in my eyes–i can’t remember the last time i bought or even thumbed through one. so yeah, they got their own issues to work out over there. i think they are basically trying to eat off their past legacy, because i can’t think of anything they’ve done in the last two to three years that was truly relevant to the culture. i wouldn’t even say that they are really even reaching the people like that anymore–they are now more noted for coming up with these wack-ass lists, cover stories and general co-signs that are apparently available at a price. they’re more about quick notoriety to keep their rep up, as opposed to legitimately valuable content (pretty much a mirror of the music business as we currently know it, wouldn’t you say?). notoriety and authentic credibility are two completely different things, so if VIBE wants to strive for the former and forgo the latter, then that’s on them.

it’s no surprise to me that VIBE failed to acknowledge this site. they missed a couple of other key destinations as well. it says a lot about them, if you ask me. this all should just encourage KN and other dope sites to just keep building, and to focus on the content, even if measurable success takes its time arriving. slow and steady wins the race.

8 onez May 20, 2009 at 5:25 pm

hooty-hoo!!!

9 jobu May 20, 2009 at 5:28 pm

Do it for the LOVE, not for the FAME…..

p.s. what the %$^& do they know anyway, they got a bad VIBE coming off them.

10 Jonny May 20, 2009 at 5:29 pm

You guys are definitely a top 50 blog for sure. From the music to the writing to the layout. It’s fucking tight.

11 Jonny May 20, 2009 at 5:32 pm

and for what it’s worth Vibes been wack from the jump..getting dissed by them isn’t anything to give a fuck about. it’s a cornball rag that stands 100 notches below toilet paper in my world.

12 Mike May 20, 2009 at 5:53 pm

Man I think of this site as a representative of me. Of what hip hop is. This is the heart and soul of hip hop and my favortie site of any kind! I mean a lot of other sites represent the exploitation or the greed and popularity of the culture but they AREN’T the culture. I would never sweat this list because it don’t mean ish!! I’ll forever be greatful for this site because as a life long hip hop head I’ve found so much great music that I haven’t found anywhere before. Thanks

13 manz May 20, 2009 at 6:18 pm

^^^^^ I cosign on that Mike. Sites like KN.com, HHIR (luv ur site Ivan btw!) and Illroots, (just to name a few) are on the grind EVERYDAY bringing readers GREAT content! Not to say Vibe didn’t list some really good blogs (nahright, 2dopeboyz, smoking section) but the fact that you all weren’t on there shows how out of touch with the community they are. You all should do a piece on “What relevant print mediums still exist in Hip Hop?” and see if Vibe comes up on that list (cause if there are any I’d like to know) Man, I remember when getting 5 mics from the Source was practically a career changer for an artist. You all are what the Source and these print publications used to represent, cutting edge. Keep doing yall thing!! Much respect. Peace.

14 Tyes Tunes May 20, 2009 at 6:29 pm

Been lurking here for probably month 2 after it started but I just gotta comment on this! I found the site by looking for that original beat for a track I was working on (personal project). I went form “who the hell sampled…?” found it here through one of the unique sample sets, and got pleasantly surprised to see ALL of the other things here. Now I call it home!
As far as what else can be done here to make the next list…

1. Post mad leaks and become another reason for artists to defend their money and hate blogs. Then justify it by saying “we got it first!!!” and “it helps to promote the artist.
2. Post the most pseudo beef shit that you can. You know the kinda stuff that has every juvenile commenter screaming FIRST, and f- mouseBudden cuz he ain’t betta den Mef..Fiddy and Gay-unit wack, Officer Ricky run da Souf. And so on.
3. Be first to post some leaked soft porn photos of Rhianna and Cassie (even though that stuff’s been all over the internets for months).
4. Remove all the sample sets cuz who cares ’bout all that OLD music anyway!
5. Only post mixtapes from DJ’s that I know their name and they have to have at least 5 Lil Wayne tracks or dey wack!

I hope everyone really reads this and gets my sarcasm. There truly isn’t anything I would change here besides me personally promoting this site to everyone I know that loves Hip-Hop. Hope all that read this do the same! by the way VIBE WACK!..lol

15 Thomas May 20, 2009 at 6:40 pm

The content on the site is what drives it. This site has been built brick by brick. Blogging isn’t aas easy at seems. Lots of time, preparation, and thought goes into just about every post.

Props to those that did make the list.

16 Kevin May 20, 2009 at 6:46 pm

Wow, thanks to everyone for the kind words! I told Deez initially I wasn’t so sure about him posting this, but I knew he had to get it off his chest. Glad to see there are others that feel the same way!

17 Teck May 20, 2009 at 7:07 pm

i mean i like dis site..and da contest and wateva..and i think yall are a top 50 blog..BUT whoeva typed dis post sounds aggy as hell..no offense jus sayin..if u and ur fans of da site kno yall are a top blog dats all dat matta..u dont need to post a rant about it..

18 GUEVARA May 20, 2009 at 7:27 pm

fuck em all, dude! i come to this site everyday. even when i finish work at 10:30 at night, and have to start at 8 the next morning, i gotta check in to see what’s new in hip hop via your website. please don’t let this deter you or your team for putting out the hotness! hip hop needs kevinnottingham.com!!!!!!!!!!!

19 eA May 20, 2009 at 7:50 pm

Although I dimissed the list originally, it was questionable in the back of my head, still.
I mean, this isn’t about ‘tooting our own horn’ rather wondering what the fuck is up.

Nonetheless, I can probably say nobody on the team is looking for that ‘fame.’ Nobody is driven off of these list. We love what we do, we stand behind what we write, and regardless of whether 5 people view the site or 1500, hip-hop stays alive.

20 K. Sidney May 20, 2009 at 8:29 pm

VIBE is a struggling, soon-to-be-defunct magazine that is doing everything in its power to stay afloat. The magazine industry is losing readers to the blogosphere @ an alarming rate, and VIBE, in an effort to remain relevant, has put out a lot of controversial lists in order to remain in everyone’s mouthpiece. VIBE is basically swagger-jacking BYRON CRAWFORD: BYRON is famous for hating on almost EVERYTHING, he pisses off a bunch of people with his opinions, therefore, people get upset and talk about him, and that’s what VIBE is doing. No need to get upset about not being on that list, because once VIBE is forced to close down their magazine doors and enter the internet world exclusively, they’ll be begging a site like this to feature them on a “MAGAZINES THAT WE USED TO LOVE” list. This site has more exclusives than any other blog I’ve ever visited, you guys break more artists, and you have the best layout, bar none. VIBE=irrelevant. KN’S BLOG=unlimited potential. Give ‘em the bristles DEEZ.

21 Quackas May 20, 2009 at 10:59 pm

First off Wanna give my homie Deez a big BRAPPPSSS for settin it str8 about this wack ass picks from Vibe on the Blogs ting, cause on the real if it was not for this site man, I think my homies “Empire aka Fifth Letter Fam’ would not be gettin the exposure due to KN (I didnt forget u too Keezey!! lol) Others sites are all the same jus who is posting it faster than the other guy. Plus love how you guys talk about real music no water down shit and the reviews are on point!!! Keep doing what u do fellas…and Thanks for posting my squads music man got more heatery for y’all soon!!!

22 Sean Deez May 20, 2009 at 11:08 pm

Big shouts to HHIR.. by no means did I mean to neglect you guys. If i wanted to go on a rant about who the dopest blogs are, you guys would surely be mentioned with like.. 10 other ones that really only matter.

Big ups to me complaining

23 S.T.T.R.E.S.S. May 20, 2009 at 11:10 pm

I found this site and instantly feel in love with it and never left. It’s not any site out there like it, that stays true to good music and the little guy.Anybody that’s gotten to know how I am, knows I will ride for this spot and anybody contributing to it.Hell, I will damn near fight u over certain shit concerning the site.LOL.At the end of the day, it does’nt matter who’s not recognizing u, but who does. Some of the most famous words are: REAL BAD BOYS MOVE IN SILENCE.

One!

24 S.T.T.R.E.S.S. May 20, 2009 at 11:14 pm

Oh yea,Vibe has been on the down slope anyways, every since XXL popped up on th scene.I’m just saying…….

25 skeme May 21, 2009 at 12:52 am

26 onez May 21, 2009 at 1:39 am

KN is my new SOURCE for/from back in the days :) + I gotta have love for THIMK too

27 Trackstar the DJ May 21, 2009 at 2:06 am

yes

28 SoulClap May 21, 2009 at 2:51 am

I got bookmarked just around 10 blogsworth checking, and Kevin NOttingham is 2 on that list. (after Wake Your Daughter Up of course) I love the blog! Those vibe people are stupid, the rap bracked showed it, this proves it ;)

29 Phil N. DeBlanc May 21, 2009 at 3:12 am

Man listen I’ll try to not to go on a rant, but the Vibe blog list falls along the lines of the bogus greatest/top emcees list. I take it as entertainment more then newsworthy information.
What you guys do here is great and I hope you guys continue with the integrity of the site as you move forward with things. I know it leaves you salty on the no mention but it’s clear that these folks don’t have their fingers on the pulse of things to know what’s up.

You guys are the fingers that keep the pulse on what’s newsworthy and what’s going on along with great extras. Vibe can go stir up some madness else where. I have some other choice words for Vibe, but I’ll keep it classy like Ron Burgundy.

Peace!

30 MK May 21, 2009 at 3:20 am

Before I moved out here to Hawaii my homeboy would always hook me up with music since he introduced me to the movement. Ever since leaving I had fallen behind in the scene and I always desired more music and expanding my knowledge in the underground. This is the place I found first, and since then have never turned from it. Who gives a shit about what some half-assed magazine thinks? Myself, along with the rest of the community seen here, love, support, and respect this blog and the work you put into it. Just seeing everything you’ve done here, we can all pretty much agree that you play a big part in the underground hip hop (or even just hip hop in general) movement, and of course, you are the shit. Keep doing your thing Kev, because here is where we find the true meaning of hip hop. Peace.

31 nofrillz May 21, 2009 at 5:20 am

well done once again deezee. long time. anyway i gotta say that the last section is thee most poignant of the piece. every other site i check for has a whole load of dissing going on. only TSS to an extent is the same. This is why i frequent these pages regularly.

Also, is it me or are there a lot of affiliated blogs on that list. i count 6 or 7 in the top 20 that are regularly patting each other on the back. and i dont ever see one in depth piece in any of those blogs.

now i try to speak on different topics directly or indirectly inluenced or influencing Hip Hop & many of these sites don’t even try. and i’m doing it from an outside perspective (UK)

these blogs hold an awful lot of weight & they should try to bring something else to the table also. KN (and many others) does just that.

32 J. Rizzle May 21, 2009 at 6:47 am

Much Respect to Thomas, Deez, Beads, Carsten, Freddie C, aRa Sia, DJ Grain, eA, Edwin Ortiz and the coach of the team Kevin ..Y’all keep doin’ what y’all are doin’..

I like the fact that all of you bring your exquitse swag to the table and when it comes together u have a “CLASSIC” hiphopblog that “DO IT FOR HIP HOP” !!!

P.S. – the songs “classic” & “I do it for hip-hop” has been cleared for use in the before mentioned comment, lol

33 MaG May 21, 2009 at 12:59 pm

Deez man you hit the nail on the head….I can’t dven remember how I happened on this site about 9 months ago…i think I was looking for some cool beat tapes to spit over…and man I just fell in love…the whole staff from freddie c to deez to kev man…ya’ll make this feel homely…real family. i go in the cbox and start convo’s and hop in on convo’s and everything feels and sounds relevant…

I dun found producers and emcees and just plain ol good music that I really wouldn’t have found myself…i have so much confidence going to this site EVEY morning knowing I’ma find quality posts and threads and articles and reveiws. It makes me feel good to know there are still heads who sincerely care about the culture itself, not just the random foolishness that goes on…there’s alot of d*ck riding in otha blog spots where popularity contests overshadow the music..like who knows who…like deez, you manage remot right? i can’t even tell you how many times i’ve seen a plug for him on here…you know why? cause i haven’t. ya’ll just focus on putting out quality and not “yo this my man so he’s on every otha post”. I respect ya’ll so much.

34 MaG May 21, 2009 at 1:04 pm

and p.s. man vibe aint been the same pac and big died…real talk..last best covers….in the end man the real gonna stay around….and people gonna keep supporting the site cause of how official it is….

35 Lynx May 21, 2009 at 3:18 pm

This is the realest and best blog I’ve found to date, and im definitely here to stay until anything (if ever) manages to offer something better than Kevin does, which I don’t see happening any time soon… :-)

36 Sean Deez May 21, 2009 at 4:13 pm

While I’ve been crazily busy to really respond to everything everyone has said, I have read every comment and really realllllllllllllly love the love that we are getting.

It’s dopeness. Just goes to show we have the best readers in hip hop too.

37 akzzle4shzzle May 21, 2009 at 8:39 pm

yo as a fellow blogger, and avid follower of this site, I would like to say my blog does similar things to others, but this blog by Kevin is completely different than others. The sample sets are amazing, the discussions are fun, and on top of that, everything is monitored and fair. Along with all this the contests are fun, and this site actually gives a chance to new acts, and underground hip hop. Top 50? nah, easily Top 25!

38 Ronni Rebel June 1, 2009 at 3:48 pm
