As you all know, we get loads and loads of music submissions all the time. Because my main man Keezy had mentioned him prior and spoke highly of Mr. Theo 3, the next time Theo submitted work, it naturally caught my eye and ear a little more. With that said, and all biases aside, the dude was dope. Pure, raw mc talent. He recently caught some buzz with his 50 bars-same pattern video and hopefully will continue to develop a name for himself amongst hip hop’s elite underground in North America. Working with some of Canadian’s hip hop best, Theology 3 continues to grow as an artist and is truly someone who takes his craft seriously. Check the interview for all you need to know about the man.
Where You Reppin:
Comin’ live from Toronto… affectionately named by me as The Screwface Capital®. Raised by Vaughan Rd. on Arlington Ave. and have been in this city before the Raptors hatched, Blue Jays beat the Phillies and Argos had Raghib Ismail…it’s been a grip.
Introduce Yourself:
I’m on that Beakman’s World shit with the bars trying to blend these rhymes together just right. The mixture’s beginning to bubble up crazy, it’s definitely time to go in. When the World isn’t pushing my sanity to the brink, I’m a radio host for the Stylistik Endeavors show on 89.5fm in T.O. and a community worker teaching songwritng and Hip Hop principles of respect, knowledge and innovation to youth all over the city. Our show has been on the air for 12 years and I’ve been blessed to rock for half of that beside Dj Serious and Dj Fase, both of whom are known across the city for party rockin’ and deeeep crates. Being on radio is dope, stay connected with the new and old joints, learn professionalism and timeliness on the mic and talk with some dope artists for real. On the community work flex, I work everywhere in the city from Rexdale to Scarborough with “At Risk” youth, better known as intelligent, culturally diverse young people that are “At Risk” of showing politicians how racist and narrow minded their policies are. Actually certified to do this bizness as well, double diploma graduate in community work and Social Service work.
Current projects we should be looking out for:
The MAKE IT BIG joint with Dj Alibi and the remix produced by Muneshine set the table nicely for the FEATURING…NO Features E.P. which should be available for digital download on my webpages at the end of May/Early June. Also watch for the World Wide Side Project with my homie Dj Fase where we break up the boundaries of tempo, style, sound and content normally associated with straight forward rap shit. That’s a fucking bold statement, I completely retract that. Oh yeah, my man 4th Pyramid from up here will be releasing a new single with Montreal super producer Simahlak so check for my contribution to that project. He’s got a real unique sound, dope skills. Simahlak is a beast on the beats. What you may be checking out right now, word to Deez and KN, is the 50 Bar, Same Pattern joint which has been getting alot of love around the place. Just whylin’ out on the bars and having fun with a foolish vid concept, look out for more visual displays of my lunacy in the months to come. The main push will be around my FEATURING…NO Features E.P. which should be ready to go by June digitally. Keepin’ it fresh, wide array of styles and sounds. Watch for it.
Previous work that we should know about:
Shouts to Kenn Starr, I was on his Starr Report CD with the joint “Worst Nightmare,” produced by Oddisee. My good friend Dj L’Oqenz was affiliated with his label project and introduced us. Past Worldwide releases have included the Audio Research/Dj Serious single Again by Masta Ace in which I rocked the B Side Snakes with Dj Grouch. Repped on that Dj Craze Rugged Radio Saturday CD that Audio Research released as well. In terms of live shows, have performed at all the major outdoor spots in Toronto, even Sky Dome. Did a Joe Carter tribute before the set, mad fun. Biggest shows would be rocking at Masta Ace and Lupe in the club district. Gettin it in, ain’t nothing like live performance. It’s a definite art.
Main musical inspirations:
Gotta go with Albert King, Albert Collins, Beatles, Marley, BDP, BDK, Ice T, Eric and Ra. Too many to mention. Currently checkin for Royce, Q Tip’s new record, cat named Wio K from up here, Empire, Tona, Adversaree & Ski, Mayhem and a few other local talents reppin.
If you had to pick one song that defines your career to date, what song would that be?
I’m goin’ with You Know My Love by Otis Rush because no matter what the life circumstances are I’ve built, conceptualized and learned the ins and outs of my music in order to rep Hip Hop with creativity and substance. As for who I am and what personal joint represents me, you can check for that self produced Robberies track with Dj Grouch, you can check for that TIME track with Tone Mason and you can check for that Step Up Your Game track with T Wrecks on the boards. That conscious battling style, where I drop punches with social commentary. I’m a Libra, gotta maintain balance. If you’re a Youtube archivist, check out that recent interview with the homie Dj Eclipse at the Halftime Show in New York City. Put down some bars at the end and previewed some newness beforehand
What’s next for you?
Setting up the Set up. Who knew preparing for something you can’t see yet would take so damn long? Sharpening up the videos, picking singles, like Trugoy said we gonna stay gettin our collab on with ill producers. Hopefully tours in the near future.
Desert Island Hip Hop: If you could only take one record on a deserted island with you, what album would that be?
Bobby Bland and B.B. King’s Together Again for the Very First Time…Hip Hop record…umm…Common Resurrection, Ice Cube Death Certificate and BDP Live Hardcore Worldwide in a 3LP Elimination Death Match. The winner joins me on a deserted Island. Nice Prize. But yeah, going back to the B.B. and Bobby record, that’s just pure skills and raw emotion. Bobby Bland makes grunting noises that are more heartfelt and gritty than half the records I’ve ever heard. Plus if you check that record, the dope part is that they pick someone out of the audience and this random lady Viola Jackson absolutely flattens the place. Spontaneous shit. Trust me, knowing joints from way back and hearing dudes lay it down inspires me to update my skills and try to match that intensity. We have a segment on the radio show called Breakbeat science where we combine the sampled track with its new incarnation. It’s hella important to connect the two, fuck grade 11 biology but that’s symbiosis Deez.
Any shout outs or last words?
Big shouts to Deez and Kevin Nottingham along with all the readers for the respect and appreciation. My crew Camp X, Stylistik Endeavors fam, Real Frequency and the whole of Toronto. Big ups – Theo3 The Screwface Capital® Rep
