The Blueprint 2009 Remix Contest: Week 8

by Kevin on June 7, 2009

email

I’ve had people hittin me up today saying, “Yo, Kev, where’s the new contest?” Ok, ok… I’m gettin to it… calm down… lol. This week is the week that I honestly have not been looking forward to. I’ve never heard anyone remix Jay’s “Heart of The City” and I honestly don’t think it could be done very well… especially using the same Bobby Blue Bland sample that Kanye used. The original is just timeless… even if Kanye didn’t really do much with the sample, but replay it. That’s the beauty of it. Well, my challenge for all of you is to PROVE ME WRONG. Prove to me that this song can be remixed and remixed well. Prove to me that this sample can be flipped to make this track just as classic as the original. But keep it soulful… you don’t wanna fuck with this vibe. Prove me wrong…

Remember, if you’re new to the contest, read the rules. Remix is due next Sunday (June 14th) by 3pm Eastern Time. Good luck!

I searched for the perfect sample – Some urban feel, and didn’t really like what I had and after three days of searching I finally found some swedish musicíans who had the feel with this song – I agree with Kev and this joint and Song Cry are gonna be some headaches for many…. Im very pleased with mine and are selfish enough to play all my remixes from this contest on my way to work in the early morning… And this one is the perfect travel song…
One and good luck to all..

Isbjergs joint doooooooope! But is that permitted to just use the voice sample and something completely different for the melody?

  • RNP

yo Isbjerg that shit is cleann!!! and i dont find that selfish, why woul you put something out there that you yourself wouldn’t bump?? keep the heat comin..
I’ve been working on this all afternoon.. I think it came together pretty well. Here’s my submission:

  • http://kevinnottingham.com Kevin

You know SoulClap, I didn’t specify, so it’s all good. I forgot there was a vocal break in the sample… lol. So props to Isbjerg for pulling that out. Anyone else can feel free to do the same; however I would LOVE to hear someone flip the instrumentation of the sample. But Isbjerg definitely did his thing with that. Ok, enough comments from me… lol

that might be a tough one to pull off right there lol

Berg, great blend of samples. I tried to do the same thing this week, it shouldn’t be hard to identify the second sample in there, but let’s see if y’all can get it.

  • http://myspace.com/halfcentric Half-Centric

my bad, i meant to type jerg, not berg, isbjerg just to clarify.

  • http://www.myspace.com/beatsbyphur Phur

Kev. Is it kool if I re-up?

  • http://kevinnottingham.com Kevin

Phur, do whatever you gotta do. I always take the very last submission anyone sends me.

  • http://www.myspace.com/bassbeatsproduction Lil’ Ish

Half-Centric, your remix is TOUGH!!!!!!! I don’t think anyone would have had the same idea and flipped the sample the way you did.

  • http://myspace.com/halfcentric Half-Centric

Ay, thanks Ish. I was reading the rules, and Kev said he wanted soul, but I wanted something else, so that’s what I came up with.

  • RNP

Half-Centric, the riffs go hard..i like the higher pitch on the last “aint no love” before the verses kick in, good lead in.. the drums used mesh perfect, good choice and good work overall

    RNP

  • http://myspace.com/halfcentric Half-Centric

Thank you man. Your intro is so solid, gives me a real early 90′s vibe to hip hop, are you a DJ, ’cause your intro sounds like you chop like one. anyway, great job, good loop of the sample, and I was diggin the singing you used for the hook.

    Comments appreciated…one!

  • http://www.myspace.com/gc88e G.C.

Tokyo – Pure Tokyo right there. Chops fit the vibe, drums are grimy! Some small vocal running, I had mine at exactly 85.5 BPM if that helps fam…
Is – What a great vibe…like you said, it reminds me of a cross-country journey or something, great melodics for real!
RNP – Genius with the chorus man! Love the drums, the blend reminds me of Party Ben for real man!
Phur – I know you’re gonna re-up, but I love the chops! Great way to switch it up but keep the original vibe!
Half – Hello Rick Rubin! Damn, talk about switching up the vibe! lol Sick though!

  • http://myspace.com/halfcentric Half-Centric

Thanks G.C. Rick Rubin? That’s quite a comparison. I like the quick chops you used to mash it up. It has a nice uptempo jazz/swing kind of vibe. And the percussion you used just help to set it off.

Isbjerg: Daym man! that’s some real heavy shit right there! Riktigt fedt mand!
Tokyo: tight beat bro! but the Accapella is slightly off.
Half-Centric: daym your shit came out hard and knocking! like the different vibe on it!
G.C: Ouuf! shit you came hard with the stabby chops my man! This is deffinatly a tough beat! and the mixing is really nice!

have’nt checked the others out but i’m about to when i get home :) tough week, tough sample :)

isbjerg- that shit was nice. Like the vibe of it.
RNP- Love what you did wit the intro
GC-crazy chops! no need to say nothing else about it!!!

Anybody know where I can get some crazy punk Rock type snare samples?

  • Complexxx

    Imma bout to go in

  • http://myspace.com/tokyocigarstyle Tokyo Cigar

Isbjerg – Yo fam that beat is the roll up champion. Very beautiful and zoned out. I think this joint is competition for that heat rock you did for the Classified contest.

Phur – Nice chop. When it was building i thought you were gonna go for the straight loop but when it dropped i was like OHHHH!! Is that a ASR jumpoff? The fuzzyness was throwing it off a bit but dope overall.

Half – Great rock twist. Very intense. Nice blend with the drums and the guitars. Whats the sample?

GC – FUNKYTOWN FAM FUNKY TOWN. The joint got more crazy stabs than Norman Bates LOL. I love the bongos. You getting back into that DC jumpoff with this. Thanks for the tempo info.

Tommy 2 Gunz – This joint is CHUCK NORRIS. This is joint is the jumpoff. I love how it’s minimalist but full. You off the hook for the intro. WOW. King crimson got good snares also check out techno joints for snares. ( my boy Teddy put me on to that )

Cenzo – I’m bopping to this joint right now. It’s close to the original but you twisted it just right. As usual you got the clean drums that are just UGLY with how they bang.

I gotta check out the rest. I wanna see how EB flipped his. Box.net is great cause it gives me a chance to hear it off the break without downloading.

Nuff respect to cats that laced this cause Kanye raped the juiciest parts of the record so to pull off this joint is hard. I almost sat this one out like the “Thief of Baghdad” part of the illtravis contest. I actually got a headache trying to figure how i was gonna do mines. I dont think i went in enough but i just threw it out cause i felt it was decent enough.

  • http://myspace.com/halfcentric Half-Centric

Thanks Tokyo, your joint was poppin’. It has a real vintage hip-hop feel, and I’m diggin’ that for real. I can’t reveal my sample til next sunday. lol. But you can take a stab at it if you want. But hit me up next Sunday, and I’ll def let you know what I used.

  • http://myspace.com/halfcentric Half-Centric

EB, your shit was tight. It makes me feel like it should be laced on the soundtrack to Four Brothers, it’s got mad soul. Big props.

Here’s my final mixdown. I reflipped it slightly and added more breakdowns. The EQ is better and the drums smack more. PLEASE forget the last version i uploaded.
Yo GC Good looking out for dropping the tempo. The vocals fit tight.

  • http://myspace.com/protbeats PROT

GC – nice job on the chops… did you do that with pads or randomly?

  • http://www.myspace.com/gc88e G.C.

@PROT – I used Sound Forge to chop the SHIT out of it, basically note for note. Then I used FL8 to sequence. No pads, but that was the feel I was going for. Thanks for the love!

  • tscassid

Hey, Im new to this site. 19 years old. I go to Saginaw Valley State University. I just seen this contest and thought i might sign up for the site. I got started on beats about a month ago. I only got an mpc 500. But im gettin pretty good at it. I worked pretty hard on this one. Tell me how you like it.

    http://www.box.net/shared/5r46ojaqa0

I dont know how to do the link thing, but there is the address.

  • http://www.myspace.com/gc88e G.C.

@tscassid – Nice job with only a month experience! If you want a good critique, I noticed the vocals running a bit from verse to verse. Try setting your tempo to 85.5 BPM. I like the chops you used, you definitely have an ear! Keep it going, this forum is the perfect place to sharpen your skills! Great job!

  • tscassid

Thanks G.C.. Actually now that i think about it its been like 2 months. But uh, yeah i know there are some parts where the vocals dont go with the verse. But then other parts it seems like they do. It’s like Jay changes the tempo of his vocals in some parts. But yeah im prolly off a little bit too. But it got to the point where i didnt feel like workin on it anymore. But cool. How long have you been doin beats and stuff. I dont want to sound like i know it all. But there arent any kids my age that listen to the good music. It’s all that new bull shit. And maybe im a hater, but i just can appreciate Lil Wayne. im prolly a hater. But like none of my friends even know who the hell nas is and stuff. I dont know that much seein that when nas was hot i was only like 7, and my parents didnt even let me listen to rap, middle class white family, you know how that goes. But uh, yeah you guys on here prolly know so much about the hip hop artists. You prolly were listenin to their stuff in like the early 90′s. Thats tight. New music is effin gay.

  • tscassid

Ay i listened to your’s G.C. Thats tight. Do you guys use mpc’s or like fl, or what. I really like the mpc. It’s easier for me because its more naturalwhen your doing your melody. But yeah i like your entry.

  • tscassid

but i chop up samples on Audacity. Seems easier that way.

  • tscassid

sorry earlier meant to say that i CANT appreciate Lil Wayne.

  • http://www.myspace.com/gc88e G.C.

“But like none of my friends even know who the hell nas is and stuff.” Damn, it’s a sad day.

I have been producing since 1996-1997. That’s why my beats always have that feel from that era, it was my favorite time (’93-’97) for hip hop, so I try to reflect that in my music. I use FL8, Sound Forge, and sometimes Cubase.

  • tscassid

@G.C. Yeah thats tight. Would of been cool to experience.

  • tscassid

@G.C. have you ever tried to use an mpc?

  • http://www.myspace.com/gc88e G.C.

@tscassid No I have not. I have been wanting to get one for a while, but I may just get a pad that will function with FL because it is basically the same thing just a different interface.

  • RNP

    ayyo tscassid,
pretty dope for your time in the game.. they vocals do ride on you a little but the gap isnt as bad as it could be, good shit though.. deff headed on the right track
I’m 19, as well so i feel a lot of what you’re saying.. i wish i was old enough to experience the “golden years” of hip hop since we hear so much about it.
I’ve been into making beats since i was about 15.. mainly using sound forge for everything

    RNP

  • tscassid

@ G.C. dude yeah i had a Akai Mpd 24, but i had no idea how to use FL, so i was like ima just save up for an mpc. If you learn how to use FL wih an MPD that would be cool. Considering their also only like 50 bucks on Ebay. whereas the cheapest mpc like 500. You should get one when you get the chance. I really like bein able to physically interact with my music.

@ RNP No doubt man, that would be cool to have been around durin that stuff. But uh RNP you go myspace or facebook? hook me up with an address.

    http://www.box.net/shared/87443vlabk

probably self sabotage, but I just used the chords from the sample. Made it more lounge/jazz ish.

  • http://twitter.com/coryhall Cory Hall

RNP: The blend concept isn’t bad. but more than a few points are really dissonant. and the mix needs to be calmed down a lot.
GC: The mix really needs bass to bring it together.
Half Centric: I don’t know about the vibe, but the blend is nice.
EB: the beat doesn’t really fit the chorus too well. possibly too many elements trying to compete with the the vocals.
Cralias: The elements just don’t coalesce.
Cenzo: There’s a moment in the chorus where there’s an unintentional dissonace.
Beat Matixx: It doesn’t sound like you sped the sample up any, which, if i am correct, is going to make the vocals not quite connect the way you want them to.
Prot: Did I hear autotune? The elements just aren’t really hitting hard enough. and because you used autotune, Why didn’t you snap the vocals to match your new harmonies? but on the plus side, the sample chops weren’t bad.
Tokyo: There are a too many sound sources competing for attention. selective mixing and subtracting elements could fix that. the vocal sample gets a little annoying to me.
tscassid: interesting concept. timing needs to be tighter. and mixing, but you’re new. speaking of new, if new music sucks, then what is our purpose? music like all cultural endeavors represents the time from whence it came. Why go about trying to do something that’s been done before or trying to emulate another era, that’s not being true to yourself or the music.
LSR81: with the intricate chops come problem when trying to sync melodies. but, the second kanye vocals in the chorus start out on a strong unexpected chord.
DJ Easy: the elements are all over the place. the drums, the sample, the vocals, nothing is really lining up.
High P: you started off strong, then more and more things kept adding in, without there really being a focal point.
Cory: i don’t really like my drums.

General advice, the passage tonicizes a different key, so jay and kanye’s vocals match the changing harmony, so with the chops, it’s easy to put something dissonant under them.
one more thing, along with the tempo being 85.5 i got the sample to match up with the right key/tempo by pitching it up one step.

  • http://www.myspace.com/gc88e G.C.

@Cory – Very calm vibe, chords you chose match the sung parts of the chorus. I prefer heavier drums, but the drums you chose fit the chill vibe you presented. Nice filtering too.

  • http://www.myspace.com/gc88e G.C.

@Cory – BTW, thanks for the critique. I actually thought about adding bass to it and tried it but in the end decided that the bass hindered the chops. I wanted to showcase the chops, so I left the remix with only the bass found in the sample. Filtering the bass out of the sample sounded horrible.

  • http://www.myspace.com/gc88e G.C.

Decided to take Cory’s advice and re-up the bass line.

    http://www.box.net/shared/v6en9x3qzu

    Enjoy!

  • lsr81

good shit G.C., the bass made an improvement to the overall sound of the flip. my favorite one so far.

  • http://www.myspace.com/campbell_craven Brendan

It seems like a lot of people just either looped the sample, just like kanye did (and it sounds just like kanye’s does) or they chopped the shit out of it. Here is my attempt at chopping the shit out of it. Comments appreciated.

Yo EB. Nice as hell. I like how you flipped it. You let it breathe but still kept the tension in there. I like the part that you used for the sample. It’s one of those things that when i heard it i was like “DOH. I should have used that”

Yo Brendan. If you EQ out the drums from the sample and add some more bass to your kick you will have a winner there. Some of the extra chops went over my head but the part that you flipped “place that i go” was chunky.

Thanks to those that felt my joint. I fucked up at first by trying to filter out the sample to bring out the bass but when i re EQ’d it, i felt it sounded better. Big up to GC again for dropping the tempo science.

@Phur yo that clip was DUMB HARD. Dude went in on the keys like WOW!!!!!!!!

yo Perfect P, that was dope, you took what I think everyone else was trying to accomplish, and accomplished it. you got soul, hip-hop, and a mix of the sample, and laid it out. good job.

Man, I’ve heard alot of good joints…I’m wondering what you guys will think of mine. Hollaback

ayo, Perfect Pitch – THE LOL is in the building. You actually used the “cause you ain’t around” sample that I did! That’s the ONLY thing I hate about sampling. If we are restricted to using the material, the mathematic chance of someone coming up with the same things becomes a great possibility. NOW, if we could’ve came up from scratch, this contest would really be putting dudes on their “A” game. Props to everyone…this was fun.

    Whaddup Folks,
here’s my submission. I looped the drum fill in the beginning and did some pitch shifting. Hope you guys dig the beat. Nice work, people, i listened to every single beat so far. Cant wait to see the winners list.

RNP – I dig the drums on that and the travelling feel of it, but I dont feel the chorus.. It doesnt fit the joint..
Half-Centric – Nice angle on the sample and the chorus is a great idea..
EB – I sense some playful MPC work in this… You had fun with this.. God stil..
DJTommyIIGunz – DAMN !!! You got the whole ish locked down.. The Intro is pure genius the vibe is to be regonized and the hidden sample is accepted.. Nice job..And for the punk drums, go ape and find the Monkees – Plenty of hard drums..
Cenzo – Not much different from the original, but I like the movement in the joint..
Beat Matixx – I like your direction in this, but I would have had some orchestra part in the verses…
Tokyo – My main mayn, As usual you twist the sample to the wheels fall of the ride..
tscassid – Vocals running as mentioned, but you got some superb ideas and went with them.. Amazing work and welcome..
lsr81 – Not doing it for me, the vocals were running a bit and I got lost in the chopping..
Cory Hall – Im not sure with Jays voice effect, but youre welcome everyday with that type of producing..
PROT – I didnt catch me at first, but it grew on me..
GC – That is some serious chopping.. And your Boom Bap drums do their part in this.. I was doubtful with the chorus but I heard it a few times to forget the original version and ended up humming it.. Good one..
44th – Great touch on that sample of the joint..
YoKuzin – I really like your production.. An outstanding entry..
Brendan – Got to power to your joint… Nice intro to..
Phurcat – Boy, you chop em nicely.. Bring it on..
PERFECT.P.IIITCH – I like the vibe in your joint… I would have used a more snapping snare.. I doesn’t get enough room compared to the rest.. But I dig the joint..
Boogie – You make me wanna do the handclapping (Not cool on work, doing the uncontrolled handslapping in public )

@ Cory… Jay’s vocal sounds layered on top of the track.. I really enjoy the joint for being smooth as an old club cat and a groovy tune for the midnight sneakers… I like it being different from the rest and that why Jay sounds like he’s not in the mix but on top of the mix.. Please tell me if it doesnt make sense.. It’s a superb track and I just noticed it as a little thing.. Do your thing, Mr. Velvet Suit Man..

  • PERFECT.P.IIITCH

Half-Centric: hey thanks man I appreciate your comment… Man I’ve learned a lot from listening to you guys I’ve never been in a contest like this… Makes me work twice as hard when I hear beats poppin around here… at the end of the day, you trying to make good music…

Isbjerg: Thanks man I’m happy you liked it… I try to get a little better every week… You know I enjoy your production…
