Coming from Cincinnati, Ohio a city known for not being the most supportive of local artists The Red Giants (Jermiside & Brickbeats) have helped put their city on the map. The duo has been featured on both Tanya Morgan albums and a host of features with various artists from around the world, so these guys are definetely not rookies. This year is turning out to be a very promising year with the duo dropping several mixtapes and albums. Be sure to check out the Chain Reaction EP dropping today. I had a chance to finally catch up with The Red Giants while they were taking a break from recording and get a insight into what plans they have up their sleeves. Check out the interview after the jump.
For those folks out there that do not know, who do the Red Giants consist of?
Jermiside: Jermiside the rapper and Brick the producer/turntablist
When did the Red Giants form?
Jermiside: In like 2005 I guess(?). There wasn’t really an official start or time that I can remember. It was just something that kinda developed over time. We just built off the working relationship we already had and went from there.
When you get a track/beat how long does it generally take you to lay down your verse?
Jermiside: Well a feature or something usually takes no time at all but an actual song I usually like to sit down with it for a minute. I guess generally speaking, if I can’t just sit down and dig right into the beat off rip & come with something I don’t even waste my time messing with it. It takes a pretty good beat to sustain my attention long enough for me to wanna write to it. Not sure if I even answered the question, haha.
Brick, how do you go about creating a beat?
Brickbeats: I dont really have a set pattern. It just depends on my inspiration. Sometimes its as simple as hearing a dope part of a song that I want to sample.
How did you come up with the names Red Giants, Brick Beats, and Jermiside?
Jermiside: We wanted something representative of Cincinnati, which is the Reds, they used to be dubbed the Big Red Machine in there heyday and a Red Giant Star is a start thats dying and as a result shines like 3 times brighter than what it did before so its kinda like a hip-hop metaphor. They say Its dying so we’re gonna make it shine even brighter. The name Jermiside just morphed from when I used to do my little graffiti thing I used to write Jermz, all just plays off of my government name (Jermaine).
Brickbeats: came from my website I created back in 98…
Brick, have you had any formal musical training?
Brickbeats: I had piano lessons when I was 6…
How long has The Chain Reaction EP been in the works, and when will it drop?
Jermiside: It drops June 8th. We were actually in the middle of compiling material for the new album and it got to a point where we felt like we needed to get something new out to the public so we picked a couple joints that we felt flowed together. It’s basically a collection of songs recorded over about a year time span.
What artists are you featuring on the EP?
Jermiside: We got Theory Hazit, Bekah from the Movement Fam out in Australia, of course the Lessondary crew, Tanya Morgan, Che Grand, Spec Boogie and my man Skee tha Sergon from Cincinnati. It’s basically a family affair.
What is concept behind The Chain Reaction EP?
Jermiside: Brick came up with the name for it, basically to represent our return and the EP is also the first of about 3 Red Giants projects we plan on releasing this year so its gonna cause a chain reaction of sorts.
Brick, you’ve worked extensively with Tanya Morgan, when you produce a beat for TM what type of sound do you try to create?
Brickbeats: I dont really have a particular sound in mind but, they do normally like the beats that are more groovy.
How many songs have you produced for Tanya Morgan and the Lessondary crew?
Brickbeats: I would say about, 30 or 40…
Brick, can you name some of the artists you have worked with?
I’ve pretty much only been working with Jerm and T.M. here lately, but I plan on working with many more artist in the near future.
Fellas thanks for taking time out of your schedules, do you have any last words for the fans.
