Serving up as the production half of the DMV duo Panacea, K-Murdock grew up during the 88-97 Golden Era of hip hop, being inspired by the jazz and soul samples ATCQ frontman Q-Tip and producers like DJ Premier and Pete Rock were flipping in the 90s. K-Murdock has producing as Panacea for roughly 5 1/2 years yet his production credits also range from neo-soul, jazz-funk, electronica and even progressive rock.
We had the chance to catch up with K-Murdock recently. K-Murdock sat down with us and well as gave us the exclusive on a yet unreleased track that he produced for Raheem DeVaughn. You can listen to that after you Get To Know K-Murdock…
Where You Reppin:
K-Murdock: I rep the DMV (DC/Maryland/Virginia) area. I was born in Washington DC but lived most of my life in a suburb of Maryland called Silver Spring.
Introduce Yourself:
K-Murdock: My name is K-Murdock, producer of the group Panacea. I have also produced songs for Raheem Devaughn. I call my productions “Neo-sonic” cuz its just like it says, a new sound. i make music from anything, videogames, records, anime movies… pretty much whatever inspires my life, ends up somehow in my music. I also been co-hosting a hip-hop show on Sirius XM Satellite Radio called “Subsoniq” the last 8 years. I worked in radio for almost 10 years until last year when i decided to finally become a full-time artist and put my music first! Oh yeah, I’m a big football fan, buts that’s another story…. lol.
Current projects we should be looking out for:
K-Murdock: The 5th Panacea album will be out this fall on a label to be determined, lol. It’s called “The 12 Step Program”. I also got 2 side projects I’m doing which should be out before 2010 hits.. one is called “The Ebony Bed” [www.theebonybed.com] and is me teaming up with a rock singer friend of mine and the other involves my man Random from Philly [myspace.com/random215] doing an ode to Nintendo games with a project we call “Forever Famicom.” Oh yeah, I also got the 2nd installment of my Mood Muzik series comin this summer!
Previous work that we should know about:
K-Murdock: Any of the Panacea albums, particularly the last one, A Mind on a Ship Through Time, which didn’t get much publicity as our prior releases on Rawkus Records. For more stuff people may or may not have heard from me, check my blogspot, I give away so much of my older catalogue cuz I want people to hear my progressions…. www.neosonix.blogspot.com
Main musical inspirations:
K-Murdock: Most things in life inspire my music, but being as that’s so bland and broad, lol, I’ll get specific… anime, videogames, groups that range from A Tribe Called Quest to the Flaming Lips, legendary producers that range from Quincy Jones to Ryuichi Sakamoto, contemporary hip-hop producers that range from Spinna to Nicolay, and of course Dilla who was too beyond his own time!
If you had to pick one song that defines your career to date, what song would that be?
K-Murdock: The first song that kinda introduced me and my group to the masses was the song/video “Starlite” off Panacea’s 2006 album “Ink is My Drink”. That song really was crazy as far as sound and I had reservations about people accepting it, but I’m glad it was the song people heard cuz it really showed them that sonically I was out there and wasnt planning on coming back from being so far out but rather going deeper beyond into the world of music… you can peep the video here:
Why should the readers and fans give you a shot and listen to your music from here on out?
K-Murdock: Cuz I really do try and be progressive where some dudes are talkin about “next level this and that” and sound like the 1,000th coming of Premo again. Like, I feel sonically there not many producers who dare to really branch out and fuse other elements beyond the same soul and jazz records or presets on the “insert hot synth module here”. lol Just listen to the Panacea records… nuff said.
What’s next for you?
K-Murdock: Trying to get into scoring videogames, and not sports stuff like most hi-hop based producers are always doign, but games like Final Fantasy and stuff where there hasn’t been a genuine hip-hop element but should be
Also, I mix and master albums on the side, so any artist or labels who got stuff, lemme know [myspace.com/neosonicprod], I use my audio engineer experience to dabble it that stuff. I learned and worked with some of the best!
Desert Island Hip Hop: If you could only take one record on a deserted island with you, what album would that be?
K-Murdock: Probably Tribe’s “Midnight Maruaders”
Any shout outs or last words?
K-Murdock: Shouts to my partner in rhyme Raw Poetic, my man Damu the Fudgemunk, my homie Random and all the other artist/labels I have worked with. Please peep the blogspot [www.neosonix.blogspot.com] and follow me on Twitter if you like [www.twitter.com/neosonix].
