Kevin’s Rant: Blogging is a Thankless Job

I rarely get on here to rant or voice my opinion, so when I do you know that there really is something on my mind. I want to use this post as the official notice to the end of our Inbox series. The work involved with putting that post together (often 3-4 hours every Saturday) is just not enough for us to keep it going. So since I hadn’t done an inbox post in two weeks, my email currently looks like the pic above.

I still believe the Inbox series was a great idea and it allowed me to try to please everyone by posting everything that I receive on a weekly basis. You’d think it would be enough. To some people it wasn’t. A lot of the emails I received after I started the series ended with, “please don’t put me in the inbox.” People still wanted their own seperate posts.

This past week I have been heavily utilizing our new interns, Justin & Ben, to post the most pertinent articles that I saw fit for the site. That has easily pushed our daily posts past 15 per day. While it keeps things fresh on the site, some of our exclusive articles get pushed to the next page and I here people complain that we are now posting too much. Again, we can’t please everyone.

So, while I look for a happy medium, we’re still gonna continue to do our thing. In the meantime, the little guy (or the guy I don’t know) is gonna suffer. Why? Because my current solution for that full mailbox above is the delete key.

Before I end this rant, I want to share with you all an email I received recently that just put me over the edge and finalized my decision. While I realize this guy does not represent the majority of people who send me music, as many are very grateful, it just shows that there are a lot of ungrateful fucks out there and further proves that blogging is a thankless job. A job that I do not get paid for and do on my own free time.

I posted 3 of your shits and gave you a spotlight. I rarely post Charles on the site, but he got hundreds of views and plenty of comments; yours got maybe two. I never really dug your music in the first place, just tried to give you a break. I don’t get paid for blogging, though I wish I did. No more shit from you? Good… one less email I now have to delete.

I think your generosity is an awesome thing but I don’t think you owe anyone any more than what you promise. As long as there are humans on this Earth, there will be complaints.     yo kev….i love the blog…there are some unsavory people out there, don’t let em get you down!!! People really do appreciate the site including myself, this is one of the only “big-name” blogs imho that still take submissions seriously. 2DB & illroots & smoking section rarely ever pay attention to the little guy and/or the underground scene nearly as much as you do. That’s what sets you blog apart and makes it better, you post best of both worlds. And the remix contests!!! other blogs don’t do them nearly as much as you. I hope sometime in the future you will re-instate the inbox, as it sets you apart from the other blogs and makes everything more personable.

    Lastly, I have always thanked you for posting my stuff, and in case I didn’t one of those times…THANKS A MILLION!!! MUCH APPRECIATED!!

    It’s funny that people didn’t want to be in the Inbox. I can’t tell what the views were like, but I know I ran into people around the net and the city saying “Yo, that (blank) dude in that inbox? He was dope.”

    I mean, frequently, people would tell me about someone they heard in the inbox that they had heard and liked. In fact, more people probably got more spotlight from an inbox series than they would from a singular post….

    I feel Kevin’s pain… we do a lot of this for the love of music.

    Nah but seriously, I cant speak for anybody else, but I love coming here. It really helped me up my game producing in the battles (not that I wasn’t allready nice as fck! lol).
    I have only sent one thing to the inbox and I’m grateful that you did put it up for me. Good lookin on that.

    The only problem wit the inbox though was that It felt, to some people, like the music got lost in the mix. I understand you cant possibly listen to everybody’s stuff before you put it up in the inbox, so when you put it all up it ends up with like 7 or 8 really hot songs mixed in with like 25 other nuccas that shouldn’t have ever picked up a mic to begin with. and after listening to 9 or 10 wack MFs cats just stop listening to the rest. I think that’s what some people would complain about.
    But I personally dont care about that. I’m just happy to see the music up there. It definitely gets me more plays and site clicks than if you didn’t put it up there. So Thanks A LOT
    hell that one lil line got me 450 views to my webssite and 600 plays on my songs!!!
    I do kinda hope one day I can get a review from one of you guys though. I need some quotes to add to my press kit. lol

    How do you and Tha UFO and anyone else feel this sense of entitlement that everything he sends to Kev MUST be posted? Man we got people who have visited this site since day one who haven’t gotten as many post as this dude.

    Answer that for me. Answer my question on his unprofessional email to Kev. I guess that’s ok tho right.

    The Inbox was a way for everything and I mean EVERYTHING that was sent our way to get out to people. It was a way for artist such as your boy to see his/her name up on the web on someone’s else site….not just their own social website. It took time to post that joint….but for dudes like him to send emails such as that (at top of the page) why do it.

    I can’t speak for Kev, but I wouldn’t’ have sent an email back to him either. Talk about what?

    You should just leave it alone… It’s Kev’s page so he decides what to put up and what not, he owes nobody an xplanation why he did anything.

    He gets no money out of this and he’s doing it for the LOVE! And if people get criticized for doing what they love, we are really in a bad state… My experiences lately are that a lot of the hardcore underground heads are ungrateful, unreasonably critical and intolerant…
    If you’re always complaining do something about it or stop bothering people who actually got a life.
