Go-Go and Hip-Hop have always been linked together and borrowed from each other. Whether its Public Enemy sampling Trouble Funk’s “Pump It Up” or Ice Cube, Public Enemy, Eric B and Rakim, etc sampling The Soul Searcher’s “Ashley’s Roachclip.” Or Go-Go bands incorporating the hottest Hip-Hop or R&B songs into their acts. Go-Go and Hip-Hop kinda grew up together.
Even today you have a new artist such as Wale, a D.C./Maryland native paying homage to his D.C./Maryland roots by incorporating Go-Go into his music. He has a local band (U.C.B.) backing him on his Attention Deficit tour. Wale’s “The Feature Heavy Song” (hear song) and “Sweatin’ Out Weaves” (hear song) are perfect examples of the two genres merging.
Rick Rubin even signed Junkyard Band to a record deal in the mid 80’s even though they only released two singles on the label (”Sardines” and “Word”).
This mixtape features some examples of Hip Hop songs incorporating that Go-Go sound. The tape features The Roots, Kid N Play, Sweet Tee, Jill Scott, and others. However, the tape doesn’t include Jay-Z’s “Do It Again (Put Ya Hands Up)” (hear song) that uses elements of Rare Essence’s “Overnight Scenario” (hear song).

Thanks, man. DMV love!
Though I gotta say, Amerie’s ‘One Thing’ definitely belongs on this tape.
Thanx for postin’ this Thomas, this is a start to educate the masses about how the mainstream music has stolen music from this art form.
