Introducing… The Black Sunn

Black Sunn

About a month ago we highlighted a mixtape from Baltimore’s The Black Sunn and producer Mydus, Born Alone Die Alone [download]. The joint was so hot, that we hit up the emcee to find out what he’s all about. Hit the jump to get to know The Black Sunn…

Where You Reppin:

Baltimore, MD

Introduce Yourself:

Well, my name is The Black Sunn, I’m 19 & I’m a musician..I’ve always been in love with music, ever since I heard C.R.E.A.M. when I was about 3 or 4. I love to express myself through music and I put my life experiences (things I’ve seen, done & felt) into my art. I take this seriously & put it first & foremost, because it is my first and only love.

Current projects we should be looking out for:

My “Born Alone, Die Alone” project with Mydus, I just released that. 810 is also coming out with “Glass Half Full” sometime late July/early August.

Previous work that we should know about:

“The Dawn of The Black Sunn”, I put that out last year…and 810’s “Supply & Demand”, fully produced by Mydus.

Main musical inspirations:

NaS, 2pac, Mos Def, Pharoahe Monche and Big L when it comes to Hip Hop… Bob Marley (and his family), Fela Kuti, Marvin Gaye and many others in general.

If you had to pick one song that defines your career to date, what song would that be?

Hmm..that’s tough but there’s this song by Blu called “Another Day”..it describes not only my career but my life in general. Also, this song he did called “Dancing in The Rain”..that’s how it really is sometimes.

Why should the readers and fans give you a shot and listen to your music from here on out?

Because I try to offer a dose of life from my point of view..I’m not a conceited dude, I’m more concerned with reality & I want to show the world that we are all human and all feel & experience the same basic things, that’s why we’re human… I think that’s been lost lately, even though the music is starting to sonically get back to that classic feel..There’s too much shallowness & “arrogant entitlement” if that makes sense..I don’t focus on the superficial bullshit, I just aim to make great music that can touch people’s lives and if you like that, you’ll fuck with me.

What’s next for you?

I’m just going to keep pushing my music to as many ears as possible and see what the future holds.. trying to get more shows & get songs on radio..making videos for certain songs..and working on my next project. I was influenced by a song from Exile’s “Radio” album and I’m going to call it “The Sound is God”. I plan on blowing people’s minds with that one.

Desert Island Hip Hop: If you could only take one record on a deserted island with you, what album would that be?

Oh, no doubt in my mind, NaS – Illmatic. The first Hip Hop album that made me go “WOW”…I think why is self explanatory lol

Any shout outs or last words?

Shouts to 810, Mydus, Varan, Complex & my whole team. Shouts to Al Peace too, he’s another Baltimore artist who’s music I enjoy (& we still need to get into the studio man!! lol..) Beyond that, shouts to those who love & support me, & to those who don’t…it is what it is. PEACE

I enjoyed the Born Alone Die Alone project, first thing I ever heard from both of them. Looking forward to more from both.
