Cormega: Radiant Jewels [Track of the Day]

Cormega is dope period.  I’ve always wonder why he isn’t mentioned as a Top rapper of his era? His voice is an acquired taste, his rhymes aren’t too complex; but he paints vivid pictures with his words.  I remember Nas giving him a shout on “One Love” and first hearing his voice on “Affirmative Action” from It Was Written.  I became a fan once I heard snippets of his shelved Def Jam album The Testament (released in 2005) back in 98.

Mega has dropped some dope rhymes during his career…..peep “Thun & Kicko” from Tha Realness [download samples], “Introspective” from The True Meaning [download samples], and his best verse “What’s Ya Poison?” from Mobb Deep’s Murda Muzik.  “What’s Ya Poison?” was my favorite verse until I heard “Radiant Jewels.”

Mega owns this track from Chamber Music [read review] destroying every other verse on the album….yes even Sean P’s!  Its that same ole Mega drug dealing/street/hustling type ish, but damn his words put you right there with him.

Hit the cut for the audio and lyrical break down of the song.

Lyrics from OHHLA

“Aiyo, word to mother
Ya’ll niggas better one ya selfs son, word

When Pun was packing a mack in back of the Acura
I was dealing in them buildings, it wasn’t no cameras
The witness savages, snitching was hazardous, now it isn’t
Shit is embarrassing, fuck a flow, this is a lyrical aquaduct
Sink or swim for what I’m hearing you bagging up
Lyte like the MC, I’m ‘paper thin’, you tripping
I’m taking trips, your eyes don’t lie, take a glimpse
Into my life, you see me blazing clips, with the green to make it rich
With a team that’ll scrape the Knicks, and a v that’s crazy quick
I came to wear my Yankee fitted, represent for greatness
It’s lyrical elevation, causing mental stimulation
If I’m getting too deep, I give you a minute to take in
My jewels radiant, like a view of the Caymans
And thinking you seeing me, who you playing with?
Cor, Mega, raw forever
Fell back, pause, fell off? Never”

Wu-Tang Clan feat. Cormega & Sean Price: “Radiant Jewels”
From the album: Chamber Music (2009)
