Is Vinyl Making a Comeback?

Props to my man Lennon who sent this video to me before we started having server problems. With the slow death of the Compact Disc and the rise of digital music, why not bring back one of the best forms of physical music? This video documentary takes a look at vinyl records and how they’re making a comeback. Now if only I could find a record store around here…

Word up to Max Henstell.

Glad to see the site up and running again. Great post. Of course, vinyl is the best format. Here in Los Angeles, the city has loss many record stores within the last decade. Sad, but understandable to a certain extent. But vinyl will always be around, you just got to make time to find it.

Here something pretty interesting for the DJ’s out there. True heads should be familiar with time coded vinyl (Serato and others) to control their digital music and still keep the standard 2 turntables and a mixer format. For me I’m living the future that I thought I wanted, no more carrying a dozen crates to gigs just a laptop, USB hard drive and a tiny space saving CD deck set-up. But the truth is I MISS VINYL so I’m looking to make the switch to Serato. They’re giving us die-hard vinyl heads reasons to pay attention. They have a deal with some labels to start pressing vinyl for them and keep their time coding on there as well. Check the links.

    Yo @ Tye
What program are you using allready? Cuz you can actually use your existing software with timecoded vinyl depending on what software you’re using already. And it seems like the money saving option if you’re allready using your CD decks to control.

    Wus good @ DJTommyIIGunz
Currently using PCDJ Red cuz it’s what I started with and it’s OK but has some latency issues and no bells n whistles really. Interested in Tracktor Scratch Duo even tho I’m no scratch battle DJ. The interface looks real intuitive plus there is a lot of both hardware and software support. I’m currently beta testing (wink, wink) DeckDance but still no biggie. I’m still undecided because my recent gigs don’t really need too much energy and ‘zigga-zigga’ so I might f-wit MixMeister Fusion which allows you to really pre-arrange your set b4 the gig, but still can be used on the fly. check it http://www.mixmeister.com
You can prolly tell I’m pretty informed and particular, but def. good lookin’ out.

Viva la vinyl! Don’t forget all you Florida folks, after 10 years of living here I FINALLY found a record store and it’s in Fort Lauderdale, RADIO ACTIVE RECORDS. And yes, they are a record store that actually sells old vinyl!!

    @Tye
I like the specs on the MixMeister. I just checked it out. It looks great on paper. I just don’t know if I’d get behind it cause it’s relatively new. Pretty much the same thing with Deckadance. I’ve actuallly used Deckadance and it just doesn’t seem as steady with the latency issues and the mobility of my set-up. Plus on my cpu it kills alot of processing power.
I’ve been using Torq for about the last 2-3 years and it’s been the most consistent that I’ve seen from DJing around town with other cats. Serato used to have real bad problems with the timecodes that would either make your song stop playing, or it would play straight timecode through your speakers in the middle of songs and the crowd goes bonkers. lol
Yes it happened to me. lol
But I think they’ve fixed those problems with Serato Scratch but I dunno about the new Itch they have. HAven’t heard anything good about it. Nothing bad either. lol
But I’m a little partial to M-Audio Torq Connectiv system. You can use your traditional turntable/Mixer setup and it comes with the interface, 2 control vinyls and 2 control CDs, along with the software. Plus you get an upgrade to Torq 1.5

I sound like a commercial. they should be paying me for this.lmao

Oh yeah and I forgot you can play your regular old school Vinyl through it too.

    @ DJTommyIIGunz
Look how we takin’ over the c-section..lol. Torq was one I was interested in but not over PCDJ…features still too similar. I also heard that about Serato Scratch and literally heard it thru the speakers as well…UN-SEXY!!!! That’s why I’m really leaning toward Traktor. I have some extra coin to possibly upgrade my whole set so the idea of a new mixer designed around this type of software is very appealing. I will continue to try out different software before I pay for anything (WIndows 7 included). As far as MixMeister is concerned I may just use it for demos and promo (wink, wink) mixtapes because it’s a major time saver over Sony Acid. Once again…your feedback is much appreciated.
    Stay up.

SORRY, DON’T HAVE A PIC. HOWEVER, THAT IS NOT THE POINT!! WHO CARES HOW I LOOK!! I AM NOT HERE TO LOOK PRETTY, BUT I AM HERE TO TALK ABOUT THE CELEBRATION OF THE VINYL RECORD MAKING A COMEBACK. THANK GOD!! I HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS MOMENT OF CELEBRATION FOR YEARS SINCE I CAN REMEMBER THE VERY FIRST TIME THEY STARTED TAKING ALL THE RECORDS OFF OF THE MAINSTREAM MUSIC CHAIN STORES BACK IN 1990!! WOW THAT DAY SUCKED!! I WAS 14 AND FEELING LIKE CRAP AS I STARED AT THE RACKS BEING CLEARED OF THE VINYL ON A CLEARANCE SALE, ONLY FOR THE CD TO TAKE IT’S PLACE. YES, THE ECONOMY HAS TECHNICALLY SUCKED FOR ABOUT 10 YRS. NOW CAUSING A LOT OF RECORD STORES TO CLOSE DOWN, EVEN HERE IN DOWNTOWN MERCED,CA WHERE THERE USED TO BE 3 DIFFERENT SHOPS WITH 3 DISTINCT THEMES. FOR A SMALL TOWN AT THE TIME, THIS WAS A HEAVENSENT. NOW ALL THAT IS LEFT HERE IS THIS STUPID PLACE THAT ONLY HAS HALF RECORDS, AND THE OTHER HALF IS A HEAD SHOP. OKAY I GUESS, CONSIDERING THIS IS A SMALL TOWN STILL OF AT LEAST LESS THAN 60,000 PEOPLE IN IT. TO ME THOUGH, HONESTLY RECORDS NEVER DIED OUT. BESIDES THE 8 TRACK, AND “THE DESTINED TO BE DOOMED FOR A OBSOLETE FUTURE FORMAT” KNOWN AS THE CASSETE TAPE, VINYL HAS ALWAYS PREVAILED EVEN DURING THE 90′S WHEN THEY WERE RELEGATED TO THE CLEARANCE BIN, AND TAKEN OFF OF THE SHELVES. FOR AWHILE UNTIL NOW VINYL KIND OF WENT A LITTLE UNDERGROUND PER SE IN THE 90′S FROM THE COLLECTIVE CONSCIENCE IN THE WORLD OF THE CD. BUT THE WISE ALWAYS KNEW THAT THERE WAS ALWAYS A PLACE FOR VINYL, AND NEVER GOT RID OF THEIR RECORD COLLECTIONS, WHICH BRINGS ME TO ANTHER PLUS ABOUT VINYL BESIDES THE BIGGER VISUAL ARTWORK, LINER NOTES/INFO ON A ARTIST,LYRIC SHEETS. IT WAS THE SOUND MOST IMPORTANTLY THAT EVERYONE THAT KNEW, ALSO COULD TELL VINYL SOUNDED WAY BETTER THAN CD, OR THE MP3/IPOD FORMAT THAT WOULD COME OUT LATER IN YEARS. THE WARMTH, DEPTH,RICHNESS. THESE ARE ALL OF THE CLEAR REASONS WHY, BESIDES PARENTS TRYING TO EDUCATE THEIR KIDS ON THE FORMAT, BUT ALSO THE PIONEERING MUSICAL SOUNDS OF ROCK,SOUL,AND FUNK OF MANY YEARS AGO. FACE IT!! YOU CANNOT TAKE A FORMAT THAT WAS ORIGINALLY RECORDED A CERTAIN WAY FROM THE PAST, DIGITALLY REMASTER IT, AND THEN FINALLY, WORSE OF ALL COMPRESS IT INTO A TINY LITTLE FORMAT KNOWN AS DIGITAL, AND PUT IT ON A CD, OR AN MP3 FILE, AND NOT EXPECT IT TO SOUND HORRIBLE. IT IS ALL OF THESE REASONS, AND MORE THAT IS PROOF ENOUGH THAT VINYL WILL DEFINITELY MAKE A COMEBACK,AND NEVER DIE OUT. FINALLY……………….BIGGER SOMETIMES IS SOMETIMES BETTER. AHHHHH!! YES, THE MEMORIES WILL REMAIN TILL THE DAY I DIE OF MY VERY FIRST RECORD. ONE OTHER THING AS WELL THAT COULD BE SAID ABOUT VINYL IS THE COLLECTABILITY THAT AN MP3, OR CD WILL NEVER HAVE. GET THE PICTURE!! NUFF SAID!! BUY A RECORD PLAYER, AND START DIGGING THOSE OLD RECORDS OUT OF THE GARAGE AGAIN!! SIT BACK, AND ENJOY!!
