The 4th quarter (Sept – Dec) is usually reserved for some of the hottest music releases you’ve been waiting for all year. This year, 2009, is no exception. Every year around this time, I like to put together a list of my most anticipated 4th quarter releases. This year it was really tough for me to put these in any kind of order, as the anticipation for each is really high. I’ve highlighted my Top 15 in alphabetical order, as well as list the rest of what I know is scheduled to drop. If I missed any releases or have some dates wrong, feel free to correct me. I promised myself that I would not include any HiPNOTT related releases in this list, but here’s my shameless plug: look out for new projects dropping this fall from Dasha, Speek Greene, Has-Lo, G.C., Cee & Bekah, Notion, and Trav Williams! 4th quarter is gonna be busy!
Brother Ali – Us

Scheduled Release: September 22, 2009
First Single: “Us” [download]
Brother Ali returns with his first full length album since 2007′s The Undisputed Truth. As with previous endeavors, the beats here are courtesy of Ant, whose production work seems to be getting more soulful and lush by the minute. The guest appearances only accentuate Brother Ali’s strengths, with Chuck D, Freeway, Joell Ortiz and Stokley Williams of Mint Condition making strong appearances.
Clipse – Till The Casket Drops

Scheduled Release: October 20, 2009
First Single: “Kinda Like A Big Deal” [download]
The Clipse is set to drop their third studio album in October and is rumored to feature production from Kanye West, Swizz Beatz, The Hitmen, The Neptunes, Rick Rubin, J.U.S.T.I.C.E. League, Alex Kresovich, Dame Grease, and DJ Khalil.
Emilio Rojas – The Natural

Scheduled Release: TBA
First Listen: “Closure” [view video]
Yeah, I know this is technically a mixtape, but with as hot Emilio’s last tape was [download Recession Proof], The Natural is gearing up to be even hotter and one of my most anticipated releases. Mixed by DJ Green Lantern, Emilio’s new tape is set to feature some hot productions (though I’ve promised not to divulge who yet). Trust me, if you’re not a fan of Emilio Rojas yet… you will be after this tape.
Freeway & Jake One – The Stimulus Package

Scheduled Release: TBA
First Leak: “Blogger” [download]
We first got word of this project back in February, only to receive a poorly put together Philadelphia Freeway 2 a few months later. Originally announced for a summer release, let’s hope we get The Stimulus Package this fall. Jake One’s White Van Music was one of my top albums of 2008 and Freeway on a Jake One beat is like peanut butter and jelly.
Ghostface – The Wizard of Poetry

Scheduled Release: September 29, 2009
First Single: “Baby” feat. Raheem DeVaughn [listen]
So Ghostface wants to put out an R&B album… nothing wrong with that! Listen to our Ghostface Killah R&B Duets compilation [download] and you’ll see that some of Ghost’s best tracks are R&B-tinged. Let’s just hope the rest of the album comes out sounding better than the first single, “Baby.”
Kidz In The Hall – Land of Makebelieve

Scheduled Release: October 13, 2009
First Single: “Flickin’” [download]
I became a fan of Kidz In The Hall with their last album, The In Crowd. It was definitely one of my favorite albums of 2008 and if the Kidz follow that same formula for Land of Makebelieve, they should have another hit on their hands.
Jay-Z – The Blueprint 3

Scheduled Release: September 11, 2009
Singles: “D.O.A. (Death of Autotune)” / “Run This Town” (feat. Kanye & Rihanna) [listen]
The Blueprint 3 has probably made every single one of our anticipation lists for the past year. We were originally hoping for a 4th quarter 2008 release, but Hov decided to make us wait a little longer. Mixed feelings surround this September 11th release as we have been waiting and waiting for so long. It seemed Jay was on point with the leak of “D.O.A.”, but lost a lot of us with the single “Run The Town.” Jay says he’s forming a new “blueprint” and also plans to form an official group with Kanye and Rihanna. If this is the new Jay that we are expected to hear, I may have to turn in my stan pass. Either way, look out for our “10 Days of Jay” feature starting September 1st! View the rumored tracklist.
Nicolay – Shibuya (City Lights Vol 2)

Scheduled Release: September 15, 2009
First Single: “Lose Your Way” feat. Carlitta Durand [download]
Hot off the release of last year’s Foreign Exchange album, Leave It All Behind, Nicolay is set to release volume 2 in his City Lights series. The Foreign Exchange producer had decided to stick with the formula and has invited FE members Phonte, Carlita Durand, and Zo! along for the ride. Nicolay never seems to disappoint, so this album is sure to be a winner. View release details.
O.C. & A.G. – Oasis

Scheduled Release: TBA
First Single: “Put It In The Box” [download via iTunes]
Originally planned for release last fall, D.I.T.C. members O.C. and A.G. should be releasing their new album Oasis on Nature Sounds Records by the end of the year. The album is executively produced by Show and also features production by E. Blaze, Lord Finesse, and Statik Selektah.
Raekwon – Only Built 4 Cuban Linx II

Scheduled Release: September 8, 2009
First Single: “House of Flying Daggers” [download via our July 09 mixtape]
An album that was originally scheduled for release in 2005 will finally see the light of day in September. Raekwon’s sequel to his 1995 debut, Only Built 4 Cuban Linx, is probably on every hip hop heads most anticipated release list. With production from Dilla, RZA, Pete Rock, Dr. Dre, The Alchemist and more you can definitely see why. Expect guest features from the regualr Wu-Tang crew as well as possible verses from Busta Rhymes, Jadakiss, Stlyes P, and Beanie Sigel. Get your Raekwon fix with our Prelude to OB4CL2 compilation.
Rakim – The Seventh Seal

Scheduled Release: September 22, 2009
First Single: “Holy Are You” [download via our July 09 mixtape]
Even longer anticipated than OB4CL2, Rakim has had us waiting with baited breath since 1999′s The Master! Originally scheduled for release in 2002, The Seventh Seal has finally been confirmed for a September release date. No other info, other than the album’s first single, is yet available.
Reflection Eternal – Revolutions Per Minute

Scheduled Release: TBA
First Single: “Back Again” [download]
We first got wind of the Reflection Eternal reunion when we interviewed Talib Kweli back in February [full interview]. Since then, they have dropped their first single, “Back Again,” and have announced release dates in July and August. Currently a date is not confirmed for release, but I know we’ll see it this year. Talib may be one of the hardest working emcees around, as he is also said to be finishing up his Idle Warship project as well as possible reunions with Madlib (Liberation 2) and Mos Def (BlackStar). Only time will tell.
Royce Da 5’9″ – Street Hop

Scheduled Release: September 22, 2009
First Single: “Shake This” prod by DJ Premier [download]
Royce Da 5’9″ never seems to disappoint. He came in at number one on our 2008 Top Emcees list, was listed multiple times in our 2008 Top 20 verses list, and has some of my favorite verses on the Slaughterhouse album due out this Tuesday. We’ve been waiting for Street Hop for a while now, but with all his recent features, Slaughterhouse materiel, as well as The Revival EP, we really can’t complain.
Skyzoo – The Salvation

Scheduled Release: September 29, 2009
First Single: “Beautiful Decay” [download via our July 09 mixtape]
Another hard working emcee, Skyzoo, is releasing the album I feel we’ve been waiting our whole lives for. Though Sky has been everywhere on the underground scene with features and mixtapes, this is his first official album release since the 9th Wonder produced Cloud 9: The 3 Day High. 9th contributes to the first single from The Salvation, as well as a few other tracks, but we’ll also get to hear Skyzoo over some Just Blaze, Black Milk, Illmind, Nottz, and Best Kept Secret beats. View release details.
Statik Selektah – 100 Proof (The Hangover)

Scheduled Release: September/October 2009
First Single: “Critically Acclaimed” [download via our July 09 mixtape]
We’ve mentioned a few hard working emcees, now let’s talk about the hardest working producer of the last couple of years. Statik Selektah released his debut production LP, Spell My Name Right, in 2007. The album was amazing. A year later, Statik outdid himself by coming even harder on Stick 2 The Script (an album I listen to weekly). Earlier this year Statik put out All In A Day’s Work with Saigon, an album they completed in 24 hours. After three albums and countless production credits with artists such as Reks, Termanology, and Consequence, 100 Proof is bound to be a sure fire hit!

Better start saving my money so I can go to support. Some of these guys I’m super looking forward to, some I’m simply looking to see if they can come correct and deliver a proper product… not some half-ass BS. (sorry, I thought of Freeway and got angry)
haha, we better get our writing hands in GEAR to rush out reviews.
I cant wait for (in this order):
Slum Village – (i know i know – but i love them so)
Clipse – ( I have every CD, every Mixtape, every Remix …. did someone say STAN)
Reflection Eternal (they are come to San Diego tomorrow Also featuring Slaughter House, Slum Village – A Tribute to J Dilla and Baatin, Supernatural w/ Pete Rock as host of the event – it’s $33 – should i go?)
The Roots ( crazy – i have never seen them in concert)
Skyzoo (3 day high – need i say more)
Raekwon ( i have to say he is the best MC out of the WU)
Jay-Z (even if i wanted to, i will not be able to escape this album)
Dre Dre (if and if this album comes out i will take the day off from work just to listen to it)
San Diego loves ya – i am out
OB4CL2 is obviously my most anticipated. Rakim, Ghost, OC/AG, Reflection Eternal, Brother Ali & Skyzoo are probably my other most anticipated in your list of 15 Kevin. I’ll be checking out all these obviously but those are the ones that have my attention.
I’m mildy interest in B3 to be honest, I’ll check it but I’m not expecting anything. Kidz in the Hall’s first album was good but The In Crowd was below average imo and Naledge’s new mixtape wasn’t that good either so my expectations are low.
Royce has the best performance on the lackluster Slaughterhouse album so I expected his album to be good and Statik’s should be as well w/ the lineup he’ll have on there.
I’m really looking forward to some ones not in the “first 15.” Can’t wait to hear the new Roots album. KRS/Buckshot should be interesting. Even though I expected most people to roll their eyes lol, I want to hear Trick Daddy’s new LP. Honestly, Trick has never made a bad album. They always have some filler but he makes up for it w/ a lot of quality tracks.
Killer Mike’s compilation should be solid. He’s got some some ATL emcees we haven’t heard from in awhile (i.e. Slimm Calhoun) and some underappreciated newcomers (Da Backwudz) on there.
I hope we get dates soon for Hell Razah, Killah Priest, Big Boi, Vakill, Buff1/Rhettmatic, Ev/ALC, Sean Price, S-Villa & Redman cause I’ve been anticipating all those.
I believe Fashawn/Exile & MOP’s albums are both coming out in September btw.
A missing artist? A little known emcee outta Chi-Town named Lupe Fiasco?
Lupe Fiasco’s L.a.s.e.r.s., in stores this December
Man, how could I forget Lupe? Thanks Genius.
Relapse 2 wasn’t making this list Kev?
goddamn. lol
And yeah about Lupe… but I wasn’t really looking forward to that 8 disc album he wanted to release lol
BP3 is top of my list. Rae, Stat, Skyzoo, M.O.P., Ghost, Royce, The Roots, Nas & Damian Marley.
Interested in hearing some of the new jacks….Kid Cudi, Wale, Drake (Thank Me Later), and even Charles Hamilton (if he ever comes out).
I hope Mary J. Blige drops something this winter.
“the salvation” is my most anticipated album for the year..im def looking forward to BROTHER ALI, EMILIO ROJAS, OC& AG, RAEKWON, RAKIM, REFLECTION ETERNAL, ROYCE DA 5’9″, STATIK SELEKTAH, THE ROOTS & WALE.
now the rumored section..my most anticipated EVIDENCE & ALCHEMIST (step brothers) & RANDOM AXE…..BUFF 1 & DJ RHETMATTIC, DJ KO (the remixes), FASWHAWN & EXILE, KILLAH PRIEST, REDMAN, SEAN PRICE, VAKILL, SELF SCIENTIFIC, JON HOPE, the hope they come out this year section..SELF SCIENTIFIC, JON HOPE, MICKEY FACTZ, CHINO XL, REKS, GANG GREENE, KAZE, COPYWRITE..im sure im missing some more albums that im looking forward to this year..PEACE
Didnt know Rednman was talking about dropping an album, The Game is supposed to have a new album this year too!
@ justin
“Royce has the best performance on the LACKLUSTER Slaughterhouse album”
Wow that’s a really strong statement! I disagree in every sense of the word. Royce came in strong on the Slaughterhouse album no doubt but to say he had the best performance is a long stretch. All 4 of them Brought it, tho i do think Crooked I had the “weak-link card” for half of the album. But It definitely wasn’t a lackluster album by far. Let’s not pretend this wasn’t one of the top 15 albums so far this year. Maybe top 10 depending on who you are. lol
As far as Royce having the best performance, that’s one that’s really too close to call. I mean Royce had some really Bright spots but Joell and Joey had just as many. And Crook was forced to come with it just because if he didn’t he was dog food. and he still ended up being mince meat pie a couple of times. lol
Royce and Joell owned the SH album. Crooked murked “Microphone” and a few others…Joey killed a couple songs…but Joell and Royce murked that album…every verse they touched was a monster. I wouldn’t call the album lackluster tho. Its on par with Double Barrell in the sense its focused on lyrics which isn’t a bad thing. DB production is better to me tho.
I think Mef, Joe Budden (The Great Escape), OJ Simpson (Guilty Simpson and Madlib) are some others.
I’ll probably think of some others.
God, Ghostface is underrated.
You know over all the way the music industry is looking the “Slaughterhouse” (I believe) is the wave of the future. Just like Naruto it’s all about the “three man squad”. Being a good solo artist is not enough, (much respect to Crooked, Royce, and Joel). As we all know there are a lot of underground rapes and / or rapper in their 30s that are not getting the push they need to become or stay stars in today music world.
So my question in closing is: witch underground rappers would you like to see in “three man squad”?
I would like to see:
West cost: Xzibit – Murs – Defari
East cost: C.L. Smooth – One Be Lo – Shawn Jackson
Down South: ?
Ladys: Bahamadia – Psalm One – J Davey
Qwel and Maker have a new one coming out called “So Be It” on September 1st. I loved their first one called “The Harvest”. Should be good stuff!
I want the Ghost/Rae/Mef album. I thought SH was a “four man team?” If SH does well at retail they will be copied. But we all know they won’t do well at retail cause the album has been on the net for 12 days.
These are my anticipated.
1. Cuban Linx II
2. Seventh Seal
3. Blueprint III
4. L.A.S.E.R.S
5. Uni5 (not on the list)
6. Detox
OMG!! Finally a release for Kamal the Abstract!!! September is going to be HOT HOT HOT!
1. Slum Village
2. Reflection Eternal – Revolutions Per Minute
3. Reakwon – Cuban Linx II
4. KRS & Buckshot
5. Rakim
@sumaku One Be Lo is actually from Michigan and Shawn Jackson is from Cali, just a heads up.
About my Slaughterhouse comment, I imagined that would get some response. It’s not a bad album. I can honestly say it isn’t in my top 20 of this year and I can name the 20 albums better than it, I’m not just saying that to try to be dramatic.
The problem with the album is the emcees, they all pretty much come correct. The problem is the execution of an album. If this was a mixtape, they did a pretty good job. But this is an album and it came off like every song was made by a formula. That made the album crowded. Royce & Crooked are similar style wise, Joell is somewhat similar to Budden. Now that can work, but not if you force every single guy to be on every single song. It can’t work like that and it didn’t.
Like I’ve said, it wasn’t a bad album. If you were pumped about the idea of Slaughterhouse, I’m sure if probably satisfied your needs. But it didn’t flow well, it isn’t enjoyable to sit down and listen to straight through (especially with their awful skits). You can make a dope Slaughterhouse playlist w/ some of these tracks but it isn’t a well executed album.
Of course, everyone has their opinion and that’s mine. I’m not trying to knock or hate on anyone who thinks it’s a dope album.
While most of the dates are accurate, my corrections are:
KiD CuDi – Man On The Moon: The End Of The Day = September 15th
O.C. & A.G. – Oasis = October 27th
Rakim – The Seventh Seal = October 2009 (not September 22nd)
Statik Selektah – 100 Proof (The Hangover) = October 2009
Fashawn & Exile – Boy Meets World = October 20th (not September)
M.O.P. – The Foundation = September 15th
Slum Village – Villa Manifesto = September 22nd
Visit my thread for more release dates:
http://www.realestniggas.com/board/showthread.php?t=774088
Let me add one:
Masta Ace & Edo.G – Arts & Entertainment (Oct. 6th)
^ any kind of source SoulClap? Not saying I don’t believe you but all I’ve heard is that they had recorded it. Just wondering where you got the release date from.
Emilio Rojas tape is gonna be the movement
The Salvation is on Top of my List. I’m also lookin foward to the Nas & Damian Marley Album. That should be great. I saw a trailer yesterday on rockthebells.com. It looks like they creatin great music. I’m also a big Jay-Z Fan so i gotta anticipate the BP3. But i got no expectations for this Album. If he goes in the “I will do a group with Rhianna & Kanye” direction then its over
@ Justin: I got it from Ace. I think they also said it on a radio show.
1. Raekwon – “Only Built 4 Cuban Linx… Pt. II”
2. M.O.P. – “The Foundation”
3. Skyzoo – “The Salvation”
4. Statik Selektah – “100 Proof (The Hangover)”
5. Brother Ali – “Us”
6. Ghostface Killah – “The Wizard Of Poetry”
7. The Roots – “How I Got Over”
8. KRS-One & Buckshot – “Survival Skills”
9. Royce Da 5’9″ – “Street Hop”
10. Random Axe – “Random Axe”
11. Vakill – “The Armor Of God”
12. Sean Price – “Mic Tyson”*
13. Redman – “Reggie Noble “0″ 9½”
14. Joe Budden – “The Great Escape”
15. CunninLynguists – “Strange Journey, Vol. 2″
There’s my 15 most anticipated albums of ’09, featuring stuff on and off the list.
*Sean Price has mentioned that he isn’t dropping Kimbo Price, which was a mixtape anyways. Mic Tyson will be the name of his next studio album.
Damian Marley & Nas completely slipped my mind. Any word on when that’s being released yet?
September is gonna be an epic month for album releases. I think Kid Cudi is scheduled to drop in September, as well. Insanity!
Hetal, keep us in the loop homie, you always got that hotness first…
ahem… unless its Common and Bis haha
I’m really looking forward to a few.
Royce, Emilio Rojas, Blueprint 3 and O.C. and A.G. should all be good. I can’t wait to hear them.
Rakim, M.O.P. and Reflection Eternal will hopefully be good.
Raekwon tops the list!!! With that said, the fourth quarter is the most solid in a lonnnnnng time! Rakim, since he is favorite of all time, and Royce since his lyrical game is as sharp as it’s ever been and he’s riding a nice wave with the whole Slaughterhouse movement. BP3 will be purchased but my expectation level is falling as the days lead up to it’s release. We’ll see, Jay really doesn’t make bad albums. ALC and Ev would be dope, too. They have great chemistry on the mic. However, if Dre drops Detox, he moves to the top of the list. People can say what they want and how the hype has subsided. But, when the ads start appearing, the buzz starts growing and the release date becomes a reality, I’ll see you in check out line on that particular Tuesday!!!!
I just woke up and recovered from rock the bells yesterday . Ima say without a doubt Slum Village is my biggest anticipation, they were the best performance of the whole show i thought and i was also really impressed with some of the sogns they played that are brand new. Raekwon could be tight, but get mad at me all you want, im not really bumpin house of flying daggers. I also am always anticipating anything blu does, ( both of his soul amazing mixtapes sound like they could be very good albums.)
Damn, yo. I had no idea Ace and Edo were dropping a joint album. That’s insane.
damn, nobody lookin’ out for Pac Div?? I know they don’t have a date widely advertised anywhere but I swear I’ve seen something about them droppin’ their Motown debut this year…
According to MURS, Felt 3 should be coming sometime before the end of the year.
Going to release the first single in the coming weeks.
Yeah, someone earlier was saying that Raekwon is the best rapper out of the Wu. I’m still wondering what drugs they were on when they typed that.
Nas & Damian Marley, and the UNI5 album by Bone Thugs-n-Harmony, are the ones I’m lookin’ forword to.
HOW IS LUPE IN THE “OTHERS” section……………..!?
MURS AND TERRANCE MARTIN-TBA
KURUPT AND TERRANCE MARTIN-STREETLIGHT-SUMMER ’09
THA DOGG POUND-100 WAYS-TBA
MURS AND SLUG-FELT 3-TBA
Im checkin for Cuban Linx II and The Salvation.
Street Hop seem like its gon be tough too. “Shake This” was insane.
Ain’t Jay Electronica working on a EP wit Just Blaze?
Interested in Blueprint 3 and any album Nas may be working on as well…
And I wanna hear what Nipsey Hussle gon bring wit Compton State of Mind…
I’m not saying yall are sleeping but MAESTROES – CULTURE WEAPON is dropping
SEPT. 1ST & should have been on the list… BBBBBeat Fanatic!!!!!
add this to my most anticipated, can’t wait 4 some new PUTS!
