The Blueprint 2009 Remix Contest: Week 14 Winner

by Kevin on August 16, 2009 · 13 comments

Yeah, I know I’m late on this… been pretty busy lately, but better late than never. I had some free time today to finish going through these and a few of you keep asking, so I figure I should get it out of the way. What a way to finish a remix contest though! “Lyrical Excercise” was the perfect ending to our 14 week long Blueprint remix contest. Lots of great remixes submitted, but there can be only one winner. The winner, of course, will be included in our Blueprint 2009 Remixtape which I hope to drop before the end of the month, if I can get the graphics squared away. Hit the jump so see who the judges picked…

1…1 and into the 2, 2 into the 3, 3 into the 4 and then you gotta BREATHE!! That’s right ladies and gentlemen, we have reach the end of what has been a long yet exciting road. All of you, whether you’ve submitted every single week or just once throughout the whole contest, have put 110% of your heart and soul into your submissions, and all of you should feel very proud for it. No site has ever done something like this at this capacity, and as classic as “The Blueprint” is, no one is gonna be able to touch “The Blueprint ReConstructed.” It was indeed an honor and a pleasure to serve as a judge for this contest, and please do not hesitate to contact me for anything for sure. Now that we got all that sentimental jazz out of the way, let’s get to actual tracks shall we?

“Breathe Easy” was indeed the true closer of “The Blueprint” Like the very first week, I was looking for the one that I knew could very well give “The Blueprint ReConstructed” the proper closure, and just about all of you, went in with that kind of mentality. You kicked it up a notch for this last week, but as always, I can only choose 5and believe me it was tough. So, here we go.

5. (tie) Johnny Burnside – Nice choice of percussion for this one. And great job of flipping it up when you went into the chorus.
Brendan AKA Crates – The part of the sample that you used was a nice touch, giving it that dark and rich sound. It complimented the percussion nicely.

4. DJ Tommy II Gunz – Great job in selecting the section of the sample. It was definitely layered nicely. I dug the idea of incorporating Jay’s vocals from the intro to put it into the chorus, but it just seemed out of sync with Jay’s vocals for the chorus a bit.

3. S.T.T.R.E.S.S. - This submission really was a great of example of the expression “Less is more.” The percussion was on point and the piano matching the vocals of the chorus was a nice touch. Also, you did a great job of doing the drops when necessary.

2. Ransom Notes – This one really sounded brand new yet epic to me. What I mean by that is that it just gave me the visuals of being on the run, ducking and hiding from the cops. That’s what music is supposed to do. Give you a visual with aural. Nice job!

1. Bidimridim – I was feeling this one the most right here. It felt the most complete. You switched up the rhyme patterns with the piano from time-to-time to keep it fresh and it complimented the choice in percussion. And you layered it nicely, adding and subtracting when necessary, and you ended it off strong.

Major props the top 5 but also big ups to the following submissions that deserve to some love as well.

Honorable Mentions:
44th Productions, Ace On Da Track, Alien, Beat Matrixx, Daquet Reed, DJ PLAYUHH, Makai, N-Jin, Nittso, Phurcat, Ransom Notes, RodLoOs, Samiraca, SCAM, Sec, Tenth, That Swedish Guy, Zach P.

5.  Bidimridim – Another solid track.  Smooth groove with knocking drums.  Transition from verses to hook is always on point.

4.  Brendan aka Crates – Love the intro to the track.  Good use of the vocals from the sample.

3.  Ion the Prize – Good intro, chop of the samples and hook is perfect.  Track is well put together with many layers.  Nice.

2.  RodLoOs – Like the rock sound vibe to the track, the Fab sample works, and drums knock.

1.  Isbjerg – What’s not to like about this track?  Elements of the original, intro is perfect, hand claps, and those drums knock.  The Rocky (I’m assuming) movie sample is perfect for this track.  The tracks gives me a visual of Jay in a ring a la LL Cool J (“Momma Said Knock  You Out”) workout out.  The track grew on me during every listen…  Good work.

Honorable Mentions:
Johnny Burnside, Phurcat, T.Mak, and 44 Productions.

5. DJ Tommy II Gunz – This one had a different take than the rest of the remixes… more soulful. I liked it a lot, but was looking for something harder. Great track though!

4. Bidimridim – I really liked this one a lot. All the elements are layered real nicely. Nice chopping!

3. Ransom Notes – The drums really knocked on this one and I dug the piano sample… really epic!

2. RodLoOs – This track hit hard and I really dug the rock vibe… I wish there could be two winners this week. It was a close call.

1. Isbjerg – Attention to detail… wow, my dude… you really nailed this one. When I heard the sound of running footsteps in the beginning, I was like, “what’s that?”… nice touch. But man, it was the drums that got me. This bitch knocks!

Honorable Mentions:
S.T.T.R.E.S.S., Confidential, Tenth, SCAM, Radio Killaz (DOE), Ion The Prize, N-Jin, DJ PLAYUHH!, Tictoc, 44th Productions, Brendan AKA Crates
