L.E.G.A.C.Y.

I am proud to present Mr. S.I.N Music himself, L.E.G.A.C.Y.  Hailing from the tobacco state of North Carolina, Leg has established himself as a force to be reckoned with.  In an industry flooded with artists talkin the same old money, cars, clothes sh*t madness, L.E.G.A.C.Y provides that rawness that has been lacking for awhile.  I suggest you head to the stores asap and cop the classic Project Mayhem album and his latest album Suicide Music.  Check our interview with L.E.G.A.C.Y after the jump.

Where are you originally from?

I was born in Fayetteville,NC… well, Fort Bragg to be exact.

Before Project Mayhem did you release any albums?

legacy6

No, I was working on two other “albums” but it got to the point I was frustrated with the old management/label situation I had so I decided to take a lot of those songs and release it myself. “Best of L.E.G.A.C.Y. (The Bootleg Version)” is what came out of that in 2001. It was regular jewel cases from Walmart, the cheap CD-R labeler with some hand drawn art on it and I put a model on the cover… very “Suicide Music-ish.” I still have some of those I may put up for sale for A LOT OF MONEY at some point… lol

When did you joing the Justus League?

legacy5

There is actual footage from a show a long time ago where I say something about just joining the Justus League. I believe the date on the tape is ‘02. I plan on putting that and a lot of other vintage old footage together for this DVD/Blu-ray to release.

What is the meaning of the name L.E.G.A.C.Y?

Life Ends Gradually And Changes You… like the same time you’re living, you’re dying.

What is the concept behind your new album Suicide Music?

Kill yourself!! lol

What artists are on your new label S.I.N Music?

legacy4Right now Strength In Numbers Music is still a promotional company I still use as a vehicle for a lot of my material and putting together shows/functions. I hope at some point I can ease off of artist details and really take the time to find and mold some new innovative artists and make the transition to a full fledged label.

Besides Petey Pablo, what NC artists do you believe help put NC on the map?

For sure Petey on the mainstream level — not my cup of brisk persay — but he brought a lot of attention to my state. I think Ski Beats — hell he was on Reasonable Doubt,um Black Sheep back when They don’t really claim it like that, but Salt-N-Pepa and Total did their thing heavy, and a slew of underground acts from NC that gained buzz. I still can’t really say NC is “on the map” but that’s more because NC doesn’t work together like a lot of the other areas that gain popularity (Houston, Atlanta, Miami)… it’s a hate state.

A lot of people consider your music to be “dark” and not your usual “bubble gum” rap.  How would you describe your style?

legacy3I consider it to be dark and not your usual bubble gum rap… lol. But really I just do uncut raw music the main focus on true artistry and the actual writing. I do what they don’t. “The best writer since the Donald Goines joints.”

We have touched on this subject before, but who do you believe is this Savior of NC?

I mean “The Carolina Savior” thing is not just another cool alias I came up with I honestly know enough about the music to where I could technically save my state from falling further into mediocre nothingness. The artists from NC that made a name for themselves did not do it by doing what everybody else did…they paved their own way. So these dime a dozen rappers using the same slang from other areas and mocking that bullshit everybody else is doing on the radio or TV you’re really just setting us further back.

What upcoming projects are you currently working on?

legacy8The irony in that question lol… honestly I was just telling somebody yesterday I’m going to get back in the studio next week and try to top Suicide Music or just quit; no in-between. If I score a new or more comfortable label situation then I’m gonna ride this shit to the rims fall off… if not, I’m going to get into something else simple as that. If I get the proper soundscape I already know what I want to do next… tentatively titled “Amerikkkan Psycho” spelled with 3 k’s to show homage to my favorite rapper Ice Cube and one of my favorite albums Amerikkkas Most Wanted. Also I was a big fan of Spice 1 so paying homage to his Amerikkkas Nightmare album also. I also plan on constructing all of this DVD footage and release something later in the year or early next year.

Music is constantly evolving sometimes for the better sometimes for the worst.  How do you feel about the industry and folks saying the south is bring down the quality of rap music and lyricism?

I’ve pretty much become numb so I don’t really have feelings about the industry anymore, I’m not easily surprised but I often go into shock when I see/hear some of the ignorant music that these wealthy middle-aged Jewish and white males endorse. It’s not the rappers it’s these gentlemen that fucked up the music that used to belong to the people. They get richer and minorities look primitive to the point now it’s almost a slave Renaissance.

What are your feelings about the Autotune madness, and would you ever use it in your songs?

Maaaan don’t get me started on that! lol

Any words for fans and new artists?

For fans I mean true fans that have been following me for a while I honestly appreciate each and everyone of you and I’ll never let you down. For new artists, find something else to do… this music thing is not promised at all.

Leg, it is always a pleasure thanks for time out of your busy schedule.  How can people contact you and find your music?

The short intro to Suicide Music made me laugh because me and my ace were having a discussion about how we wished some of these wack niggas in Hip-Hop would kill themselves when I heard it for the first time.

The album is dope and I sincerely hope that some of these MC’s would take his advice.

Leg is on some other shit that most MCs will never reach. Leg is not afraid to say what he really wants to say. Any artist that wants to go against the grain, more power to them. Suicide Music is definitely in the top 5 albums of 2009.

It’s good to see that more cats like Leg, getting exposure from my state. At one time, it was seriously bad with the “not trying to help the next man out” situation and it still is ilke that, to a degree.I totally agree with Leg about making it in the industry and being down here.If u make a name for yourself, thats exactly what u r doing,MAKING A NAME FOR YOURSELF,BY YOURSELF! Because u got some cats from here that get their foot in the door and close it and lock it before anybody can come thru. The way they use to do that back in the day was, make a name for themselves and never rep where they were from. Thats why u will notice that the majority of the cats that u hear about now, thats from around here, that make good music, are kind of up in age. We’ve been doing this hip hop thing for the longest. It’s because we havent been getting the love, support and exposure, that we are not as monumental to hip hop as some these other spots on the map. We’ve had people from here, tip toeing around the industry since LL did “I need love”.iI’m gonna leave u with this one note, without Ski putting the stamp on RD, who knows what direction hip hop would have get in.Food for thought.

Shout outs to Grain for the interview and big ups to Legacy for doing u and repping for N.C. Keep doing that good music for the people.
