KevinNottingham.com Presents The Five Boroughs: Welcome to Brooklyn…

New York City… the birthplace of hip hop. The city itself is divided into 5 boroughs… Manhatten, Queens, The Bronx, Staten Island, and Brooklyn; all five bringing their own unique flavor to the artform. This brand new mixtape series, what I’d like to call NYC: The Five Boroughs, is something that I have been mulling over since late last year. I finally got around to completing one of the tapes… Brooklyn.

Starting off with a tape dedicated to Brooklyn was an easy choice, as there are so many dope emcees who rep the borough. And when I say ‘rep’, they rep it to the fullest. Jay-Z, Biggie, Mos Def, Big Daddy Kane, Talib Kweli, M.O.P… the list goes on. We have compiled a tape of hip hop’s hottest BK Anthems and hope to complete a tape for each of the other 4 boroughs. Hit the jump for the complete tracklist and link…

If anyone has any recommended tracks for a Volume 2 or tracks to include in the other boroughs’ tapes, feel free to comment.

Great concept. Great tape. And I agree with Menlo D. Queens will be tight. Though so will the Bronx… damn they all will be sweet!

Although, anybody else who can’t stand Jay-Z’s Hello Brooklyn 2.0? AG is consistently in the system but that song just angers me.

I was in NYC a couple of weeks ago and guess what ? I couldn’t go to East Brooklyn because some broad told me they will kill me ! I said yo i come from a place much harder than Brownsville or Bedstuy but nevertheless, she was like ‘yo you white, you aint from here so i can guarantee you an ass beatin minimum !’ I was like yo i ain’t white I’m from north africa, which makes more african than any of them black brothers in the hood, but what is even more important is that I’ve been in brooklyn so many times in my mind thx to hiphop that I really need to see bk from the inside ! At the end I went to do white dude stuff : shop on flatbush, went on brooklyn heights and ate some pizza at grimadil’s ! Fuckin white skin !

Next time i go to BK i should holla at Kweli or Mos ! For real !

Dope concept, dope tape, KN on fire!!

Would Staten be anyone but Wu? If I remember right the Diggs 2, INS and Dirt aren’t even from there… Plenty of Ghost material to choose from though.

Keep up the good work!

Yo I got one for Manhattan…

Naughty by Nature – Uptown Anthem

And lots of stuff by Big L, ‘Street Struck’ and ‘Danger Zone’ maybe

13 Thomas August 20, 2009 at 1:42 pm

NBN are from Jersey right?

14 Fozzie August 20, 2009 at 2:30 pm

Yeah,
That track is from / for Juice about some kids from Harlem…
Does it count then I wonder? Subject of the song or provenance of the performer.

20 MuK August 24, 2009 at 12:28 pm

Ohhhh, sorry ;( I didn’t see that in the tracklist.

21 ThaNewT August 25, 2009 at 9:38 am

No bucktown??? There’s should be a lil more duck down on this listing.

22 Steez Diamante August 31, 2009 at 4:37 am

Great Tape would’ve love to have seen “Borough Check” on there by Digable Planets, but that uses the Roy Ayers sample so you brought it back to the essence. Also, I know you have M.O.P. on this list,, but I would gonna w/ home sweet home feat. Lord Have Mercy- that track is a beast! Kev, you any acapellas of these?
