DJ JS-1 has released his album Ground Original 2: No Sell Out on Fat Beats which features the likes of KRS-One, Killah Priest, Supastition, eMC, Pharoahe Monch, Brother Ali & more. Here is a video with JS-1 telling about who he thinks are sell outs and some shots are fired. Definitely one you gotta watch to see who gets called out and cop the album which is in stores now!

I agree with everything he talks about. Why the fuck wouldn’t someone like kanye or common, who already have fame and fortune, try and bring hip hop back to when it was HIP HOP. it blows my mind that dispite their success and status, they would’t try and turn their fans on to real music. why not take a rashid hadee under your wing, instead of a kid cudi? why not help out abstact mindstate, a group from chicago that has been struggling for 10/15 years? these, and many other questions continue to puzzle me. i guess, at the end of the day, they’re all just HERBS.

what up JS…ITS A-DOG…I fully agree with all of that.
as i rock my residencies around town and other various gigs…more and more the people want these sell out records…they feel they can’t dance to the real hip hop or something?
it’s crazy how short the shelf life is for these records…i won’t change my pace my man and that means i will see u soon on the real side!
me and my man have a night every wednesday called true school where we only play underground and golden era beats…i made em dance to jeru ‘come clean’ last night…ha!
‘if ya feelin’ lucky duck, and press ya luck…’ be easy!

Let let me tell you what a REAL “sell-out” is. A cat sitting down on couch making a youtube video talking about other people “selling out”. What these “pseudo hip-hop elitist” don’t understand is that hip-hop has no rules. It can wear a shiny suit and come back the next day with Timbo boots and Carthart jackets. Stop knocking what other people do and handle your own fucking business. Creating unnecessary boundaries only hurts Hip-Hop, it doesn’t help.

Oh and I listened to this guys album…Trash! If this what not-selling out sounds like he can keep that shit to his damn self!

Oh and check out Mr. No Sellout on Regis and Kelly shuckin and jivin!!!

Observer..if you enjoy the idea of Common and Jonas Bros together thats on you..and that vid you posted..did you even watch it? He explains turntablism and even mentions names of the pioneers…so hes educating a mass audience on HIP HOP. But like i said if you enjoy that sellout shit do you.

    P.E.A.C.E.

btw..im not saying that Regis and Kelly are to be taken serious but hes on national T.V. holding it down for the same culture most on this blog rep for…fuck that sellout shit.

  • observer

FYLOX…if you don’t fux with the Jonas Brothers I feel you. But it’s just music. Common should be able to make a song with whomever he damn well pleases. It’s not selling out. It’s just MAKING MUSIC. Do you get it now. Show me in the GREAT BIBLE OF HIP-HOP where it says you can’t make a song with the Jonas Brothers…Go ahead… I’ll wait. Hip-Hop isn’t some country golf club where only the elite can call home. If it was the culture would have died years ago.

And yes I did watch the video. But your missing the point. By just seeing him on Regis and Kelly ,people could say he was selling out. Just like you say Common is selling out by doing a song with the Jonas Brothers. Have you heard the song? Maybe Common is trying to spread some good emcee’ing to their crowd. Just be glad it’s Common and not (insert default rapper name here)

and don’t question my heart for this culture man. open your mind up and stop trying to treat Hip-Hop like some secret society.

So basically dj JS-1 is basically saying if you’re trying to expand your horizons your a sellout………….interesting. I see he has krs-one on the album, wouldn’t dj consider him a sellout since he was in a sprite commercial in the mid 90S? also Pharoah Monch’s “behind closed doors” music was on a Lugz commercial. He has some sellouts on his album too, lol. I’m a fan of the two artist i mentioned……I’m just saying u can’t take them out of the equation.

  • Keith n’ dem

“But it’s just music.” – observer aka the jonas brothers a&r

There’s the problem. This music, HIP HOP, means a lot to many people.

  • observer

Keith n’ dem – You chime in but you add nothing to the conversation.

    1. If it makes you feel better, replace the Jonas Bros. name with Willie Nelson. The point still stands.

    2. Hip-Hop has been apart of my life since a wee lad.I have the Vinyl,Cassette,CD collection to prove it. I just hate to see people put it in a box and try to act like it’s some damn social club.

    3. I’ve never heard a song by the Jonas Brothers. And I’m not employed by them.

  • http://www.myspace.com/fyhloxfunkband FYHLOX

nah no secret society issue brah…but i guess its apples and oranges at this point. Some say tomato some say tomata type isht..

and to “WHAT”..i remember those adds..true they used the music to promote products but at least the music when played could be identified as the music we all come to this site for…hell..my fav group of all time is De La Soul and they did that Nike mix…but you know what? The Shit was hot and was on some Hip Hop isht…

all i know i better not see Guilty Simpson on a Hanna Montanna record…but then again some heads may like it..tomato ,tomata.

  • http://www.myspace.com/revolveevolve evolve one

not sure i would compare common to madoff…
nobodies lives have been ruined because common did a song w/ eryka badu

  • Keith n’ dem

observer – i understand what you are preaching, but i could not disagree with you more. I like hip hop music that has A MESSAGE, that is musically influenced by soul and jazz. hip hop with LYRICS. that does not exist in the mainstream media anymore. although i hate the music on mtv and bet and the radio, i would be tolerant of it if there was an alternate to it. why not a station that gives people the opportunity to listen to what you call “social club” hip hop? that way, if people like me or JS-1, want to listen to “good” music, we don’t have to scower the internet for it. if you want to listen to your 8th grade rap, with your laffy taffy dances, im fine with that! common could do a song with miley cirus and o-town, whatever! it just erks me that the masses who don’t know much about music think that what’s on mtv, is all that exists.

  • observer

Answer me this FyLoX…How does Hip-Hop ish “sound”? What are the parameters and guideline a song has to meet to be “on some Hip-Hop ish”?

    Guilty x Hannah = GREATNESS!

  • http://www.myspace.com/fyhloxfunkband FYHLOX

i answered by saying its apples and oranges at this point..thats all i can tell you…i didnt mean to offend you at all man….or woman. Theres way too much pseudo beef online and i didnt wish to contribute by stating my feelings on the issue so accept my apology. and its FYHLOX ( cause i noticed you spelled it wrong both times. I still dont agree Guilty and Hannah would be greatness though…but like i said APPLES and ORANGES!!

btw i say man or woman since your just known as observer and you seem to defend Jonas and Montana…its not meant to disrespect your gender or sexual affiliation..i thought i would add that on just to be crystal clear that im not trying to have some childish username beef with you. Hip Hop is something we both love and we can agree on that at least

    P.E.A.C.E. and blessings thug.

P.S. Keith n’ dem your last post is on point.

  • observer

    Dear Keith n’ Dem

So you like Hip Hop with a MESSAGE,huh?
Do you know the lyrics to some of the earliest Hip-Hop songs were party records?
Does that make them LESS Hip-Hop? No. Let you tell it, our founding fathers were makers of bullshit message-less music. That’s just not the case. The truth is Hip-Hop with a MESSAGE and Hip-Hop without a MESSAGE still fall under the same umbrella. Hip-Hop.

Don’t get me started on Lyrics! Lyrics by definition are just words to a song. I enjoy the lyrics of Slum Village and Aesop Rock.I can sit and listen to Kid Cudi and in the same sitting pop in some Brother Ali (who spit on a track I produced) These are totally different types of emcees. But they all fall under the Hip-Hop family tree. Just because I might not like the lyrics to a TI song doesn’t mean he is LESS Hip-Hop than say a Rakim. It just means I might like the God MC a little more than Mr. Clifford Harris.

And all the hate a lot of the “heads” give the younger generation is hypocritical. Dances and party music have been a part of Hip-Hop since conception. Just because you don’t dig it,don’t knock it.

I will agree with you on the balance issue. But that has nothing to do with the music and more to do with the people that run the Radio, and TV networks. It’s sad to see both so one-sided when it comes to selection. But that’s what happens when you turn a culture into a cash cow. The money becomes the driving factor, consequently running everything else into the ground.

Let’s not fight people within our own culture when the people outside the culture are the ones we need to get at.

and just because YOU don’t like something dosen’t mean it’s (not hip-hop,sellout shit, bullsit, etc…)

damn…i haven’t typed this much in a while
*goes back to bumping Laffy Taffy*

I make music ( beats) but im a fan/student of the culture first and foremost..that being said , observer..where can i peep your beats out?

    FYHLOX
I see where you’re coming from. But the thing about your opinion is that it’s extremely close-minded.
    *sidebar*
I think that Comon hopping on a track wit the Jonas bros. would actually be kinda dope (if it’s done correctly). But that wouldn’t necessarily make him a sellout.
    *back to regularly scheduled post*
I only think that it’s selling out if it involves you becoming something that you’re not just to make a dollar.
    For example,
I DON’T think Kanye is a sellout because of the 808s album.
I DO think Nelly was a sellout for making the Willie Nelson record he made.
I DON’T think Nas was a sellout for the Nastradamus album.
I DO think Eminem is a sellout for making every goofy single he’s dropped with the exception of My Name Is
    Point Made

Also I hate when people say that this new rap shit (I don’t like it either) isn’t hip hop. It IS hip hop. Not DJ Premier Hip Hop. But it’s Hip Hop Nonetheless. In Hip Hop History you’ve allways had a Solja Boy in every era. Before him it was D4L. Before them it was Lil Jon. Before Him it was Swizz Beatz. Even Going Back To Dougie Fresh.
You cant front like Dougie Fresh was just a dope ass rapper. He wasn’t. Hell THE SHOW WOULDA BEEN THE WACKEST SONG EVER IF IT WASN”T FOR RICK SAVING THE DAY!!!
Let’s just be honest with ourselves here. The only thing different now is that you don’t see the balance in radio and TV that you used to so it’s just alot more obvious. But In reality you can’t blame anybody but the fans. If they didn’t like the autotune, and simple flows&Beats you wouldn’t see it on TV at all. So dont be mad at them. Be mad at the fans.

    Just my lil 2 cents

  • http://kevinnottingham.com Thomas

This video is lame. Hip-Hop is everything from Soilder Boy to X-Clan. Everybody has their own lane. I’ve eased up on my stance regarding “what’s real” and “what’s not.” Its whatever the person likes. As I have gotten older my taste have changed.

“In Hip Hop History you’ve always had a Solja Boy in every era. Before him it was D4L. Before them it was Lil Jon. Before Him it was Swizz Beatz. Even Going Back To Dougie Fresh.” < technical foul on putting Doug E Fresh in the category with these guys. Doug E Fresh made an above average album in 1988 when Follow the Leader came out, BDK, Only a Nation…plus he was one of the original (and probably) the best beat boxers in Hip Hop. WOW at that fam…..”you better than that” (c) Mark Jackson.

  • http://www.iigunzent.com DJTommyIIGunz

    @Thomas
When I was refering to Doug I wasn’t saying that he didn’t make good records. I was saying that Lyrically He’s never been a KRS-One or Rakim. FOR THAT TIME, he was their equivalent to Solja Boy. Not to say that he’s ever been as bad as “Turn My Swag On” but compared to “You Got’s To Chill” he was Solja Boy wit The Show.
Not taking anything away from him as a beatboxer, DJ, or Pure Showman. He’s probably the best at it to this day. But he’s definitely never been LL Cool J (before he started lickin his lips *pause* lol)

  • John Cauner

I gotta co-sign with “observer, DJ TommyllGunz & Thomas.” Being the only ones who made any sense with these comments. I won’t go on with my rant considering all the points I wanted to make were well said by “observer, DJ TommyllGunz & Thomas.” I will say thanks to observer for that YouTube post of DJ Hypocrite on their show. Classic. DJ Just Senstive-1, what a fucking sell out.

  • Keith n’ dem

kevin and sean deez are waaaaay above this talk. i mean, come on guys, they must be on some higher plane of thinking or something, so mature and open-minded. how stupid of us to not understand that music is music, and who cares what people like? man, i wish i had the tolerance ya’ll have. it’s really cool how you guys can apppreciate bad music.

  • http://www.myspace.com/fyhloxfunkband FYHLOX

for the record i did say its apples and oranges , tomato tomata.
i will say this convo overall explains alot to me on why things sound the way they sound these days and has been valuable. Its been a good discussion and im done with it now. Thanks yallz.

  • SAS1970

Great article, video and comments. Good to see comments that provoke debate. Each to their own i say but wishing i could go back to 1988 i have to say there is also a part of me that really detests alot of todays mainstream artists. Maybe im just getting old and starting to sound like my father!

  • WTF?

Jesus Christ are you trying to tell me that guys like Nelly, Soul(dout)jah Boy, Kanye (yes I said it) and Lil Jon make Hip Hop? It’s not by a long stretch, if anything it should be renamed Hip Pop because that’s exactly who it’s aimed at and catering for, Top 40, middle-class, white kids, who think Nelly can freestyle and Kanye actually writes most of his material, he’s no better than Puff Daddy/P Diddy but at least he had Biggie, who was actually talented. Kayne doesn’t have a creative bone in his body, just the PR to sell it, oh and ego, the guy’s a jack ass with loot. We all know Rhymefest did all the hard work on Jesus Walks, yet he rarely get’s a mention, someone who can actually freestyle the pants off of Kanye, like many others with un recognized talent. Now yall probably say I’m jealous and blab on about how he changed the face of Hip Hop……blah blah blah if I wasn’t forced to listen to his ish day in and day out on the radio, tv and movies I probably wouldn’t have a problem but it’s garbage and I do, with all these posers, damn next you will be telling me Justin Timberlake is as good as Rahzel at beatboxing, if so, then you really need to turn off the tv and commercial radio stations and tune into some REAL HIP HOP.
